Knowledge Management In Indigenous Medicine: The Expected Role Of Ghanaian University Libraries, Christopher K. Filson Mr, Paulina Afful Arthur Mrs
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
Indigenous medicine is regarded as an alternative medicine used in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sicknesses in most societies. Unfortunately, some of the works of indigenous medicine practitioners are not documented. Although a great deal has been written about the importance of knowledge management relatively little attention has been paid to how knowledge creation process of indigenous healthcare can be managed, hence the need for the university library which serves as a repository of knowledge transmission to assist in the dissemination of knowledge in indigenous medicine. The library’s interaction with the environment together with the means by which it …

Interfaces Between Linguistic Systems: Evidence From Child Language, Lyle Lustigman
Interfaces Between Linguistic Systems: Evidence From Child Language, Lyle Lustigman
Faculty Publications
Interfaces between grammatical domains have been considered from various perspectives in child language research and in general linguistics. The study aims to provide evidence for interfaces in acquisition of early clause-structure, based on longitudinal data from three Hebrew-acquiring toddlers. Two facets of their early speech output were examined: Usage productivity in verb-inflection, identified by a criterion of contextual appropriateness; and structural transparency/opacity of children’s speech output, with transparent forms being unambiguous in relation to their grammatical targets. These factors yielded two distinct developmental periods for the three children: I – from the onset of verb usage to productive verb inflection, …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
This study investigates the management and preservation of non-book materials at the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University and Ladoke Akintola University. Relevant literature on the need for management, preservation, importance, challenges and factors responsible for deterioration of this non-book materials as well as remedies, suggestion and/or recommendations for improvement was reviewed. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The study population consisted of one hundred and forty one (141) staff in the three selected university libraries. The population of the study consists of para-professionals and professionals librarian. Data were collected using questionnaire and interview. Data …

Decolonizing Our Library System: The Living Librarians (Baansi) Of Dagbon, Northern Ghana, Florence Dedzoe-Dzokotoe Plockey Mrs., Baba Alaa-Bany Ahamed Mr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The living librarians of Dagbon are knowledge producers who commit the history of Dagbon into memory and recount it from generation to generation. This study used various instruments such as in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, observations, storytelling, phased assertion, documents’ analysis, field notes, historical profiling, and acoustic appreciation to explore the living librarian of Dagbon in Northern Ghana. The data was collected from June 2013 to August 2014. The study revealed that there were various forms of livings libraries (baansi) also known as court musicians but most of the categories are now extinct. However, the most recognized and important …

Energy is a crosscutting concept in science and features prominently in national science education documents. In the Next Generation Science Standards, the primary conceptual learning goal is for learners to conserve energy as they track the transfers and transformations of energy within, into, or out of the system of interest in complex physical processes. As part of tracking energy transfers among objects, learners should (i) distinguish energy from matter, including recognizing that energy flow does not uniformly align with the movement of matter, and should (ii) identify specific mechanisms by which energy is transferred among objects, such as mechanical work …

J. K. Rowling’s series of books about the underage wizard Harry Potter is an effective tool for introducing students to the key concepts of public choice. By keeping political figures at the forefront of the story, Rowling encourages students to recognize the different incentives individuals face in markets versus politics. To illuminate the pedagogical potential of the series and to ease its adoption, we discuss a set of examples that best illustrate the key concepts of public choice. We also share a classroom exercise showcasing how the series can be used to promote active learning.

A Comparative Study Of The Flora And Soils Of Great Duck And Little Duck Islands, Maine, Usa, Luka Negoita, Matthew Dickinson, Glen Mittelhauser, Nishanta Rajakaruna
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Strong environmental gradients and varied land-use practices have generated a mosaic of habitats harboring distinct plant communities on islands on the coast of Maine. Botanical studies of Maine's islands, however, are generally limited in number and scope. Baseline studies of Maine's islands are necessary for assessing vegetation dynamics and changes in habitat conditions in relation to environmental impacts imposed by climate change, rising sea levels, invasive species, pests and pathogens, introduced herbivores, and human disturbance. We conducted a survey of the vascular plants and soils of forest, field, and ocean-side communities of Great Duck and Little Duck Islands, ME. These …

Limestone is a distinctive substrate that has significant effects on soils and plants. The present study characterizes the diversity of vascular plants, bryophytes, and lichens at the Simonton Corner Quarry Preserve, an abandoned limestone quarry in Rockport, Maine, USA, which was in operation in the late 1800s. We document vascular plant diversity and associated edaphic features (i.e., soil pH and elemental chemistry) using 30 5×5 meter plots spread throughout the site. For vascular plants, 114 species in 96 genera and 50 families were observed; few of these species are known to prefer calcareous environments, and 38% are nonnative. Conversely, the …

At a proximal level, the physiological impacts of global climate change on ectothermic organisms are manifest as changes in body temperatures. Especially for plants and animals exposed to direct solar radiation, body temperatures can be substantially different from air temperatures. We deployed biomimetic sensors that approximate the thermal characteristics of intertidal mussels at 71 sites worldwide, from 1998-present. Loggers recorded temperatures at 10–30 min intervals nearly continuously at multiple intertidal elevations. Comparisons against direct measurements of mussel tissue temperature indicated errors of ~2.0–2.5 °C, during daily fluctuations that often exceeded 15°–20 °C. Geographic patterns in thermal stress based on biomimetic …

Singular Spaces: The Power And The Passion Of Spanish Art Environments, Jo Farb Hernandez

The art environments of Spain – like those the world over – display an astounding conceptual creativity and a vernacular, seat-of-the-pants approach to construction that makes use of locally available found, natural, and recycled objects as well as fabricated components built from scratch. Each result is unique, revealing each creator-builder’s interests, challenges, and concerns as they have developed over the course of a lifetime; as such, it is easy to understand why art environments are so complex. And because we are able to physically enter into and explore the constructions as visitors, we complete the artworks in the same way …

Abstract: This paper analyzed 648 research publications that M M University-Mullana had published during nine years (2007-15). The publications data for the study was sourced from Scopus International database. The study quantified publication data by combining a variety of indicators to present a comparative view of the University’s performance in national setting. The findings revealed that total publications output of MM University-Mullana registered 65.03% annual average growth and averaged citation impact per paper of 3.27 during 2007-15. The usage of university output has been low. For instance 51.33% publication share of the University did not get any citations and 48.77% …

This paper discusses the information needs of urban and peri-urban livestock keepers and the various information sources used and their effectiveness in disseminating livestock information. Mixed method approach was the methodology used in the study whereby quantitative data was gathered using questionnaires while qualitative data was gathered using in-depth interviews and participant observations. Findings from this study revealed that livestock keepers had various information needs such as disease control (95.3%), nutrition and feeds (62.2%), markets (56.3%), housing techniques (29.1%) and loans (20.1%). Urban livestock keepers also used different sources of information to access information including veterinary shops (77.2%), extension services …
