Hud’S Transitional Housing Unit Program’S Role In The Santa Clara County Community Plan To End Homelessness, Emilie Thorburn-Quihuis

Master's Projects

Counties in California invest local, state, and federal funds to try to end homelessness. At present the homeless numbers in Santa Clara County are among the highest in the U.S. at 6,556, with 33% of those being chronically homeless. Using process evaluation to compare permanent housing and shelter demographics and recurrence rates, how is the federal Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Transitional Housing Units Program (THU) in Santa Clara County meeting the goals of the county’s Community Plan to End Homelessness 2015-2020 (2013)?

Persistent Annual Migration Patterns Of A Specialist Seabird, Rachael Orben, Nobuo Kokubun, Abram Fleishman, Alexis Will, Takashi Yamamoto, Scott Shaffer, Rosana Paredes, Akinori Takahashi, Alexander Kitaysky

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Specialization can make animals vulnerable to rapid environmental changes. For long-lived seabirds, foraging specialization may make individuals especially sensitive, as climatic changes are currently occurring over the course of one lifetime. The Bering Sea is a dynamic subarctic and arctic ecosystem where windblown sea ice mediates annual productivity and subsequent pathways to upper trophic levels. Red-legged kittiwakes Rissa brevirostris are endemic surface foraging seabirds specializing on myctophid fishes during reproduction. Their degree of specialization outside the breeding season is less understood. We examined their non-breeding ecology (migration, distribution, isotopic niche) during 4 winters with varying sea ice extent. Although we …

Herdsmen/Farmers Crises In Nigeria: The Role Of Librarians In Resolving Crises, Beetseh Kwaghga, Dzever Samuel Tion, Terwase Victoria M

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The violent crises between Fulani herdsmen and sedentary farmers in Nigeria do not constitute an alien phenomenon in Nigeria; it is a phenomenon that has been in existence for decades which have resulted in the extensive loss of lives and property. The constant crises have threatened the security of the State, reduced its economic productivity, and deepened food crisis in Nigeria. While there have been several clashes between the Fulani herdsmen and the farming communities for more than two decades, the escalation reached another level in 2014 with the Fulani herdsmen killing 1,229 people in comparison with 63 deaths in …

Fisheries Exploitation By Albatross Quantified With Lipid Analysis, Melinda Conners, Chandra Goetsch, Suzanne Budge, William Walker, Yoko Mitani, Daniel Costa, Scott Shaffer

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Mortality from incidental bycatch in longline fishery operations is a global threat to seabird populations, and especially so for the albatross family (Diomedeidae) in which 15 out of 22 species are threatened with extinction. Despite the risks, fisheries remain attractive to many species of seabird by providing access to high-energy foods in the form of discarded fish and offal, target fish, and baited hooks. Current policy regarding fisheries management is increasingly aimed at discard reform, exemplified by a discard ban initiated in the European Union Common Fisheries Policy in 2014. While there is global agreement on the importance of minimizing …

This practice is known as birth tourism. The aim of this study is to explore the perceptions of childbirth and postpartum experiences among Chinese birth tourists. Twelve women self-identifying as Chinese, between the ages of twenty-four and thirty-eight, who came to the US to give birth to their child, and who were able to read …

Using Filters In Time-Based Movie Recommender Systems, Ravee Khandagale Apr 2018

Using Filters In Time-Based Movie Recommender Systems, Ravee Khandagale

Master's Projects

On a very high level, a movie recommendation system is one which uses data about the user, data about the movie and the ratings given by a user in order to generate predictions for the movies that the user will like. This prediction is further presented to the user as a recommendation. For example, Netflix uses a recommendation system to predict movies and generate favorable recommendations for users based on their profiles and the profiles of users similar to them. In user-based collaborative filtering algorithm, the movies rated highly by the similar users of a particular user are considered as …

A Neural Network Classifier For The Coi Barcode Gene, Saurabh Marathe Apr 2018

A Neural Network Classifier For The Coi Barcode Gene, Saurabh Marathe

Master's Projects

Mitochondrial Cytochrome C Oxidase subunit I (CO I – to be read as “see – oh one”) is a 658 base pair region in the gene encoding that is proposed as standard barcode for animals. Meaning, the CO I is a special region found in animal DNA that is studied to identify the species of the animal. Currently, there is an implementation of an algorithm called ARBitrator which identifies and extracts these CO I sequences from enormous genes database called GenBank. The ARBitrator is good at extracting the CO I sequences that have better specificity and accuracy as compared to …

Mandala Generation From Brainwave With Feedforward, Kumari Anamika Sharaf Apr 2018

Mandala Generation From Brainwave With Feedforward, Kumari Anamika Sharaf

Master's Projects

Most experiments conducted in the early 1900s with Electroencephalography (EEG) [10] devices explored mental illness of the participants. Historically, EEG has had specific applications to diagnose sleep disorder, epilepsy, coma and brain death. Today, EEG devices are used extensively for research purposes [10], especially in the field of neuroscience. Traditionally, most experiments included a human participant wherein an EEG device was connected to the subject’s forehead to detect electrical impulses indicating different brainwaves. Each brainwave implied a different emotional state of mind. Past experiments [2] [3] [4] then used the brainwave signals as input to build audio/visual art to aid …

Genetic Barcode Identification With Profile Hidden Markov Models, Vishrut Sharma Apr 2018

Genetic Barcode Identification With Profile Hidden Markov Models, Vishrut Sharma

Master's Projects

DNA barcoding is a method that uses an organism’s DNA to identify its species. The gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) has been used effectively as a DNA barcode to identify organisms and elucidate relationships among species [1]. There also exists a database BOLD (Barcode Of Life Database) that contains COI sequences used for DNA barcoding for more than 1 million different species. Using BOLD to identify samples that have a match in the database is an uncomplicated process. However, this method fails to determine samples that are absent from the database. Given a sample that is not represented in …

Image Spam Classification Using Deep Learning, Ajay Pal Singh Apr 2018

Image Spam Classification Using Deep Learning, Ajay Pal Singh

Master's Projects

Image classification is a fundamental problem of computer vision and pattern recognition. Spam is unwanted bulk content and image spam is unwanted content embedded inside the images. Image spam creates threat to the email based communication systems. Nowadays, a lot of unsolicited content is circulated over the internet. While a lot of machine learning techniques are successful in detecting textual based spam, this is not the case for image spams, which can easily evade these textual-spam detection systems. In this project, we explore and evaluate four deep learning techniques that detect image spams. First, we study neural networks and the …

“Get The Mexican”: Attending To The Moral Work Of Teaching In Fraught Times, Grinell Smith, Colette Rabin

Faculty Publications

This article details a four-faceted approach we developed to help structure discourse about topics in partisan arenas, many of which intersect with issues of equity and social justice. The article’s narrative centers on challenging and emotionally charged discussions that unfolded in a classroom management class in our teacher preparation program on November 9, 2016, the day following the election of Donald Trump. We offer the approach, which centers on addressing cognitive biases common in partisan discourse, as a robust, straightforward, and nontechnocratic way to help teachers (both teacher preparation instructors and teachers of children) mediate partisan discussions among their students …

Developmental Ethanol Exposure Causes Reduced Feeding And Reveals A Critical Role For Neuropeptide F In Survival, Amanda Guevara, Hillary Gates, Brianna Urbina, Rachael French Mar 2018

Developmental Ethanol Exposure Causes Reduced Feeding And Reveals A Critical Role For Neuropeptide F In Survival, Amanda Guevara, Hillary Gates, Brianna Urbina, Rachael French

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Food intake is necessary for survival, and natural reward circuitry has evolved to help ensure that animals ingest sufficient food to maintain development, growth, and survival. Drugs of abuse, including alcohol, co-opt the natural reward circuitry in the brain, and this is a major factor in the reinforcement of drug behaviors leading to addiction. At the junction of these two aspects of reward are alterations in feeding behavior due to alcohol consumption. In particular, developmental alcohol exposure (DAE) results in a collection of physical and neurobehavioral disorders collectively referred to as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The deleterious effects of …
