Improving Steering Ability Of An Autopilot In A Fully Autonomous Car, Shivanku Mahna May 2019

Improving Steering Ability Of An Autopilot In A Fully Autonomous Car, Shivanku Mahna

Master's Projects

The world we live in is developing at a really rapid pace and along with it is developing the technology that we use. We have clearly come a long way from calling a car modern because it had a touch screen infotainment system to calling it modern because it drives on its own. The progress has been so rapid that it demands for us to analyze this and try to improvise a small part of this journey. With the same thought in mind, this project focuses on improvising the steering ability of an autonomous car. In order to make more …

Topic Classification Using Hybrid Of Unsupervised And Supervised Learning, Jayant Shelke

Master's Projects

There has been research around the idea of representing words in text as vectors and many models proposed that vary in performance as well as applications. Text processing is used for content recommendation, sentiment analysis, plagiarism detection, content creation, language translation, etc. to name a few. Specifically, we want to look at the problem of topic detection in text content of articles/blogs/summaries. With the humungous amount of text content published each and every minute on the internet, it is imperative that we have very good algorithms and approaches to analyze all the content and be able to classify most of …

In 2017, retail e-commerce users were 1.66 billion and sales worldwide amounted to 2.3 trillion US dollars, and e-retail revenues are projected to grow to 4.88 trillion USD in 2021. With the immense popularity that e-commerce has gained over past few years comes the responsibility to deliver relevant results to provide rich user experience. In order to do this, it is essential that the products on the ecommerce website be organized correctly into their respective categories. Misclassification of products leads to irrelevant results for users which not …

Deep Learning For Image Spam Detection, Tazmina Sharmin May 2019

Deep Learning For Image Spam Detection, Tazmina Sharmin

Master's Projects

Spam can be defined as unsolicited bulk email. In an effort to evade text-based spam filters, spammers can embed their spam text in an image, which is referred to as image spam. In this research, we consider the problem of image spam detection, based on image analysis. We apply various machine learning and deep learning techniques to real-world image spam datasets, and to a challenge image spam-like dataset. We obtain results comparable to previous work for the real-world datasets, while our deep learning approach yields the best results to date for the challenge dataset.

Decomposition Of Pig Carcasses At Varying Room Temperature, Jacqueline Abad Santos May 2019

Decomposition Of Pig Carcasses At Varying Room Temperature, Jacqueline Abad Santos

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The goal of this study is to assess the qualitative scoring of decomposition scales with statistical analysis while also determining which indoor environment will decompose the fastest. When comparing the three indoor environments, water decomposition appears to be the fastest, but the method of analysis for this study determines that using decomposition scales to analyze such environments may produce statistically insignificant results. For this study, piglets were put in a dry steel tub, a water filled steel tub, and a suitcase. These were recorded using photographs for 25 days and then scored using decomposition scales. The total score was divided …

Scientific Evidence Admissibility: Improving Judicial Proceedings To Decrease Erroneous Outcomes, Leica Kwong May 2019

Scientific Evidence Admissibility: Improving Judicial Proceedings To Decrease Erroneous Outcomes, Leica Kwong

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

In the United States, Federal Rules of Evidence 702, the Frye and Daubert standards govern the admissibility of scientific evidence in the courtroom. Some states adopted Frye while others adopted Daubert, causing varying judicial outcomes. The verdicts in some cases may be erroneous due to a nationally used standard. Frye has broad criteria of requiring scientific evidence to be generally accepted. While Daubert contains more requirements for the evidence to be admissible, such as peer review, publication, and scientific principles. Daubert, alongside FRE 702, provides a thorough guideline for trial judges who have the gatekeeping role to decide admissibility aiming …

Toward On-Demand Profile Hidden Markov Models For Genetic Barcode Identification, Jessica Sheu May 2019

Toward On-Demand Profile Hidden Markov Models For Genetic Barcode Identification, Jessica Sheu

Master's Projects

Genetic identification aims to solve the shortcomings of morphological identification. By using the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene as the Eukaryotic “barcode,” scientists hope to research species that may be morphologically ambiguous, elusive, or similarly difficult to visually identify. Current COI databases allow users to search only for existing database records. However, as the number of sequenced, potential COI genes increases, COI identification tools should ideally also be informative of novel, previously unreported sequences that may represent new species. If an unknown COI sequence does not represent a reported organism, an ideal identification tool would report taxonomic ranks …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The subject headings are generally prepared upon the assumptions of the cataloguer about the subject of the work. But for creating a proper subject heading, the knowledge about the grammar of subject headings is also necessary. The grammar used in formulating subject headings is not only rules about English words. It is unique in its own way. It is mainly used to avoid ambiguity and maintain uniformity. The knowledge of the grammar of subject headings makes the allotment and creation of subject headings easier for the cataloguer. This article emphasizes on the grammar of subject headings offered by the 20 …

Species Classification Using Dna Barcoding And Profile Hidden Markov Models, Sphoorti Poojary May 2019

Species Classification Using Dna Barcoding And Profile Hidden Markov Models, Sphoorti Poojary

Master's Projects

Traditional classification systems for living organisms like the Linnaean taxonomy involved classification based on morphological features of species. This traditional system is being replaced by molecular approaches which involve using gene sequences. The COI gene, also known as the ”DNA barcode” since it is unique in every species, can be used to uniquely identify organisms and thus, classify them. Classifying using gene sequences has many advantages, including correct identification of cryptic species(individuals which appear similar but belong to different species) and species which are extremely small in size. In this project, I worked on classifying COI sequences of unknown species …

Collaboration And Identity Formation In Strategic Interorganizational Partnerships: An Exploration Of Swift Identity Processes, Paula Ungureanu, Fabiola Bertolotti, Elisa Mattarelli, Francesca Bellesia

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We investigate how collective identity formation processes interplay with collaboration practices in an inter-organizational partnership promoting regional innovation. We found that initial collaboration challenges are dealt with by setting up an early “swift identity” which is associated with material artifacts to increase its strength and stability (“swift identity reification”). However, as the partnership evolves, the reified identity becomes misaligned with partners’ underdeveloped collaboration practices. To ensure realignment, new attempts at reification are performed, as partners buy time for learning how to collaborate. Our findings contribute to extant identity research by proposing alternative (i.e. “swift” and “reified”) mechanisms of identity formation …
