Traditional Funeral And Burial Rituals And Ebola Outbreaks In West Africa: A Narrative Review Of Causes And Strategy Interventions, Chulwoo Park
Faculty Publications
Introduction: In West Africa, traditional funerals and burials have proven main contributors to the spread of infectious diseases, such as Ebola, plague, the Marburg virus, and others. Although the World Health Organization has provided guidelines for the safe burial process after learning of the culture of the afterlife in Ebola-affected areas, little effort has been made to integrate theoretical interventions and models for changing West Africans’ funeral behavior. This research was conducted to study 1) the background of traditional burial rituals, 2) interventions to contain Ebola outbreaks in West Africa, and 3) a strategic approach to future disease outbreak in …

Anthropogenic noise is a known threat to marine mammals. Decades of research have shown that harbor porpoises are particularly sensitive to anthropogenic noise, and geographic displacement is a common impact from noise exposure. Small, localized populations may be particularly vulnerable to impacts associated with displacement, as animals that are excluded from their primary habitat may have reduced foraging success and survival, or be exposed to increased threats of predation or bycatch. Seal bombs are underwater explosives used in purse seine fisheries to deter marine mammals during fishery operations. Pinnipeds are believed to be the primary target for seal bomb use, …

Visual Analog Of The Acoustic Amplitude Envelope Benefits Speech Perception In Noise, Yi Yuan, Ratree Wayland, Yonghee Oh
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The nature of the visual input that integrates with the audio signal to yield speech processing advantages remains controversial. This study tests the hypothesis that the information extracted for audiovisual integration includes co-occurring suprasegmental dynamic changes in the acoustic and visual signal. English sentences embedded in multi-talker babble noise were presented to native English listeners in audio-only and audiovisual modalities. A significant intelligibility enhancement with the visual analogs congruent to the acoustic amplitude envelopes was observed. These results suggest that dynamic visual modulation provides speech rhythmic information that can be integrated online with the audio signal to enhance speech intelligibility.

A Bibliometric Analysis Of Soil Pollution Due To Microplastics, Sangita Dike, Sayali Apte
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Microplastic pollution is a global problem because of its ecological and socioeconomic impacts on the environment. The large size plastic waste, under the action of ultraviolet radiation, pressure, and wind or wave action, breaks down into particles smaller than 5 mm referred to as microplastic. This huge amount of microplastic enters the ecosystem eventually leading to soil pollution. It has been established that microplastics enter the food chain when animals eat or ingest contaminated food materials.and have an adverse effect on human health The present paper investigates, past researches in the area of microplastic pollution of soil, by a detailed …

The considerable power needed for large whales to leap out of the water may represent the single most expensive burst maneuver found in nature. However, the mechanics and energetic costs associated with the breaching behaviors of large whales remain poorly understood. In this study we deployed whale-borne tags to measure the kinematics of breaching to test the hypothesis that these spectacular aerial displays are metabolically expensive. We found that breaching whales use variable underwater trajectories, and that high-emergence breaches are faster and require more energy than predatory lunges. The most expensive breaches approach the upper limits of vertebrate muscle performance, …

Partnering Preservation With Sustainability, Carli V. Lowe
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
As the archival profession is inextricable from future-focused thinking, sustainable preservation must be incorporated into archival practice. Sustainable thinking considers the economic, environmental, social, and cultural needs of both present and future generations, without privileging one factor over another. This article investigates the existing literature on sustainable preservation practices in archives. Sustainability presents a challenge to the archival mission. Becoming more sustainable begins with changing practices, which requires investing time, money, and energy to learn new information. The imperative to provide care for cultural resources is an argument for proceeding with caution. Nevertheless, the reality of the climate crisis and …

Little is understood about how children attend to and learn from gaze when learning new words, and whether gaze confers any benefits beyond word mapping. We examine whether 6- to 11-year-old typically-developing children (n = 43) and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (n = 25) attend to and learn with gaze differently from another directional cue, an arrow cue. An eye-tracker recorded children’s attention to videos while they were taught novel words with a gaze cue or an arrow cue. Videos included objects when they were static or when they were manipulated to demonstrate the object’s function. Word learning was …

Reducing Nox Emissions Of Cargo Handling Equipment (Che) With Humid Air Systems, Hamid Rahai, Jeremy Bonifacio
Mineta Transportation Institute
The authors designed and tested a humid air system (HAS) for reducing NOx emissions of an LPG-powered forklift. The HAS uses distilled water and heat from the exhaust to generate steam that is injected into the intake air of the engine to increase humidity and thus achieve NOx reduction. Field tests with HAS have shown 2.2 ppm of NOx reduction with each percent increase in humidity of the intake air. A provisional patent based on the developed system has been filed.

The “Indirect Message” In Kierkegaard And Chán Buddhism, Zdeněk Zacpal
Comparative Philosophy
The article seeks to analyse Kierkegaard’s indirecte Meddelelse, which the author proposes to translate as ‘indirect message’. It attempts to consider and illuminate this concept and its general characteristics, types and cases in Kierkegaard's work. They are to serve as a baseline for investigations of indirect messages in Buddhism, especially the famous ‘public cases’ (gong-àn / kōan 公案) of the Chán Buddhists. The author tries to specify indirect messages on both sides of the cultural divide in terms of some Western philosophers. Kierkegaard’s theoretical rationale for his indirect message is profound, sophisticated and appropriate to the theoretical …
