Law enforcement is an emerging clinical setting for athletic trainers (ATs), yet little is known regarding law enforcement officers (LEOs) perceptions of the profession. This qualitative study following a general inductive approach explored LEOs' experiences with musculoskeletal injury and their interactions with ATs. Seven officers (N = 7) participated in one-on-one semi-structured interviews. Three themes emerged: (1) roles and responsibilities of ATs, (2) education and training, and (3) impact of injury on LEOs. While participants viewed ATs positively, they demonstrated limited understanding of the profession's scope and expertise. Participants commonly described managing musculoskeletal injuries on their own due to …

Throughout society, there are many universal uniters that brings large groups of people together. Some of these universal uniters include national pride, religion, and even sports. To an ordinary observer, sports looks the same; an environment that brings people from all different social and economic classes together through the love of sports. At a young age, sports are introduced to the lives’ of the participants, where they learn the rules of the games they play. Eventually, these participants end up in one of three areas; the professionals, the fans, or those who choose to work in the world of sport. …
The Argument For Sports Fandom And Its Unrealized Societal Benefits, Daniel Gonzalez
The Argument For Sports Fandom And Its Unrealized Societal Benefits, Daniel Gonzalez
Academic Festival
Sports fandom drives the success and continuation of sports franchises at all levels internationally, yet fans and fandom itself are often criticized. Like all things, sports fandom has both positive and negative effects; some negatives outweigh the positives, and vice versa. A lot of the positivity surrounding sports fandom is rooted in the unique connection fans seem to have to both “their” teams as well as one another. I use data and evidence from many resources to explore fandom's psychological, sociological, and economic effects on society and those within it. The main contributors to the negative stigma surrounding sports fandom …

The History Of Sports Inequality And How The Pressure On Female Athletes Affects Mental Health And Performance, Madeline Scarola
Academic Festival
While physical health is a big part of female athletes and their performance, mental health is also an extremely important factor. The pressures that society puts on female athletes to constantly prove themselves equal to men, uphold their feminine image, and still be successful renders many female athletes to develop anxiety, depression, and eating disorders that will either cause harm to their performance, increase the likelihood of injury, or make them pull out of competition completely. As more elite female athletes are bringing conversations about the pressures they face and their mental health to the forefront, hopefully it will inspire …
Wage Gap In Women's Sports, Ian Watral
Wage Gap In Women's Sports, Ian Watral
Academic Festival
From the financial standpoint, to what extent do sports leagues contribute to the gendered wage gap in professional athletics, especially as they maintain and promote male performance as top viewership? Many top-tier woman athletes are far more athletic and financially deserving than a good number of male athletes we see today. For example, Serena Williams and Hope Solo. Both women are leaders not only to their team and on the field but to the entire sport for girls to look up to and the next generation of women in sports. However, their payment reflects otherwise compared to the male sports …

The Implications Of Successful Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion (Dei) Initiatives In The Ncaa, Jackson Tse
Academic Festival
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are relatively new aspects of the NCAA, but they are becoming more important than ever. Initially introduced with the passing of Brown v. Board in 1954, DEI initiatives have grown to include legislation and organizations such as the Civil Rights Act, Title IX, and Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). These represent the first of many steps to build a more welcoming and equitable environment for the NCAA’s stakeholders, especially in regard to racial and gender diversity. Despite all of the aforementioned initiatives, there are still gaps throughout the NCAA. Positions including athletic …

How Does Gender And Race Discrimination Produce A Wage-Gap Pay In Professional Sports And Its Effects?, Phillip Ferranola
How Does Gender And Race Discrimination Produce A Wage-Gap Pay In Professional Sports And Its Effects?, Phillip Ferranola
Academic Festival
Gender and race discrimination in all different sports are seen as two types of prejudice actions that are active and are seen in the lives of those people for significant time now. All different sports throughout the world display a preference towards either one gender or another and even have a type of favoritism that contributes towards a wage-pay gap for all professional sports players. Also, many sports over the years now display a liking of a certain race of sports players which results in a lot of tension of morale and wage pay. Laws that were adopted, like the …

The Troubles In Northern Ireland, James Daniele

Ireland and England have a long and conflicting history with one another. English presence in Ireland started in 1169, but England’s first attempt to colonize Ireland took place during the 1500s-1600s. Ever since the 1500s, Ireland has been one of England’s colonies and is known for being one of their oldest colonies. On December 6, 1922, the Republic of Ireland was created as a free state independent from the United Kingdom. The remaining six Northern counties stayed with the United Kingdom and became known as Northern Ireland. From 1968-1998, religion divided the two communities in Northern Ireland, between the Catholics …

Athlete activism has been a long-standing tradition of standing up for injustices taking place within the United States. American sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards documented four waves of athlete activism starting in the 1930s through the 2010s and predicted a fifth one, which we are now watching come to fruition in the present day. This ongoing tradition stems from an unspoken responsibility for athletes of color to step up and speak up on behalf of those who came before them who were silenced, also referred to as The Heritage. This paper highlights Colin Kaepernick as the catalyst for the fourth …

Children’s developmental phases have been construed over the last year by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The early years in children’s development are very important because every action affects their brain and stimulates a reaction for the rest of their lives. The sudden change in children’s daily lives affects their understanding of how a normal day should be. Children are developing anxiety disorders which has led to a spike in childhood obesity because of the lack of structure in the child’s day. Children are trying to grasp an understanding of the virus in correlation to the family’s financial status …
