Social Justice On Catholic Campuses: Is It Enough?, Diana Diem May 2021

Social Justice On Catholic Campuses: Is It Enough?, Diana Diem

Academic Festival

There is no questioning the fundamental distinctions that make up a Catholic university. From the environment to the curriculum, the Catholic campus is unique and advantageous. Often adorned with religious statues of saints, crosses in hallways and classrooms, and a chapel resting in the middle of campus; the ambiance of a Catholic university undoubtedly reflects the spirit of Catholicism. The differences in the aura of a Catholic campus parallels the differences in the universities core values and curriculum. A Catholic university will make the effort to promote the value of human life, morality and justice from the philosophies of the …

The Necessity And Legitimacy Of Pope Francis' Complete Ban Of The Death Penalty, Helen Payton May 2021

The Necessity And Legitimacy Of Pope Francis' Complete Ban Of The Death Penalty, Helen Payton

Academic Festival

In 2018, Pope Francis updated the Catechism of the Catholic Church to say that the death penalty is “inadmissible”(2018). His action-cheered by progressive Catholics and by human rights activists regardless of religion, but chided or outright rejected by Catholic conservatives-raises the question of whether Church doctrine has been wrong for twenty centuries or if this teaching is a legitimate development of doctrine. Either way, there are thorny theological issues at stake. This essay will argue that Pope Francis’ revision of the death penalty teaching is both necessary and legitimate. The change is necessary because the key reasons for supporting the …

Religion And Theatrical Drama, An Introduction, Larry D. Bouchard, Charles A. Gillespie Jan 2021

Religion And Theatrical Drama, An Introduction, Larry D. Bouchard, Charles A. Gillespie

Catholic Studies Faculty Publications

Often, a lonely light bulb illuminates the edge of a stage outside of working hours. Part safety mechanism against falling in the dark and part theatrical tradition, the “ghost light” keeps the living alive and brightens up the place for any spirits still hoping to practice an old monologue. Stages juxtapose worlds, or fragments of worlds. The ghost light, then, would illuminate juxtaposed worlds, of the living and of the possibly otherwise. In some ways, this Special Issue of Religions takes theatrical juxtaposition as its premise. We invited papers working at intersections between studies of religious history, thought, and practice …

The Impact Of Religion On Meaning And Mental Health In Young Adults, Sara Sharp Apr 2020

The Impact Of Religion On Meaning And Mental Health In Young Adults, Sara Sharp

Academic Festival

Mental illness is an increasing problem in today's society especially among young adults. Young adults are in the stage of their lives where existential questioning is a major concern. Existential questioning includes the meaning of life, life after death, the presence of a God and other major concerns that do not have one true, clear answer. Meaning-making and purpose in life is a major contributing factor to the mental wellness of an individual. Religion, as a meaning making entity, can aid in the treatment of mental illness and avoidance of developing the illnesses to some degree. Religion also provides treatment …
