Making History A Living Memory: The Power Of Play And Role Immersion In Enhancing Education, Kathryn Haig Apr 2024

Making History A Living Memory: The Power Of Play And Role Immersion In Enhancing Education, Kathryn Haig

Academic Festival

Reacting to the Past, which employs role-immersion as a collegiate instructional tool, effectively combines active learning and play to create an engaging educational experience. This paper will examine how Reacting to the Past games alter the general disposition of a classroom, enacting a shift from quiet passivity to active and enthusiastic learning. Drawing from the work of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky, this paper will consider the ways in which social interactions, assimilation, and accommodation compliment each other in order to enhance learning (Brame 1-2). An explanation as to why kindergarten teaches us so much – it emphasizes an experience …

Community Organizing For Democratic Renewal: The Significance Of Jacques Maritain’S Support For Saul Alinsky And His Methods, Brian Stiltner Jan 2024

Community Organizing For Democratic Renewal: The Significance Of Jacques Maritain’S Support For Saul Alinsky And His Methods, Brian Stiltner

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Jacques Maritain’s ideas about democratic renewal remain as important and inspirational as ever. A less well-known element of Maritain’s political thinking is his support for grassroots community organizing. This support, peppered throughout his writings, comes into stark relief when examining his longtime friendship and correspondence with Saul Alinsky, the dean of community organizing in the US. This article argues, first, that we must understand Maritain and Alinsky’s friendship to properly appreciate the legacy of Maritain’s political thought and, second, that understanding the complementarity of their approaches allows us to see that together these two friends present a powerful strategy for …

“To Expel Or Embrace? The Challenge And Promise Of Handing Down The Catholic Intellectual Tradition In Light Of Dei Verbum”, Grant Kaplan Oct 2022

“To Expel Or Embrace? The Challenge And Promise Of Handing Down The Catholic Intellectual Tradition In Light Of Dei Verbum”, Grant Kaplan

Events

Introduction:

The conference description puts in remarkably succinct language what it takes most academics a long time to say. The description prompts participants “to explore how our reading and understanding of Vatican II documents, as well as the formative thinkers of Vatican II and the Catholic intellectual tradition, can deepen and expand our vision of Catholic higher education, addressing new and old challenges.” In accordance with this prompt, my paper will take up one challenge, an old one: handing on the Catholic intellectual tradition.

Addressing Period Poverty: The Cost Of Menstruating In America And The Ethical Responsibility To Provide Free Menstrual Care, Jayden Tabor, Olivia Delgado Apr 2022

Addressing Period Poverty: The Cost Of Menstruating In America And The Ethical Responsibility To Provide Free Menstrual Care, Jayden Tabor, Olivia Delgado

Academic Festival

UNICEF estimates that every month, some 1.8 billion people across the world menstruate (UNICEF, 2020). Menstruation is a natural, healthy, and uncontrollable part of life for anyone with the female reproductive system. Me, you, your friends, your family, and everyone else on Earth would not be born if it weren’t for this routine part of life. Why, then, does society wince at the thought of periods? The effect of menstrual stigma has plagued billions of menstruators for centuries and continues to have massive negative ramifications on the wellness and livelihood of people simply trying to cope with a biological process. …

Recasting Paul As A Chauvinist Within The Western Text-Type Manuscript Tradition: Implications For The Authorship Debate On 1 Corinthians 14.34-35, Joseph A. P. Wilson Jan 2022

Recasting Paul As A Chauvinist Within The Western Text-Type Manuscript Tradition: Implications For The Authorship Debate On 1 Corinthians 14.34-35, Joseph A. P. Wilson

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The mandate for women’s silence in 1 Corinthians 14.34-35 is an incongruity within Paul’s undisputed writings. Critical scholars expressed doubts about these verses’ authorship beginning in the nineteenth century. The consensus of egalitarian Paulists today is that vv.34-35 are not Paul’s sentiments. Disagreements about circumstances beyond this fact remain unresolved. Supporters of the quotation/refutation (“Q/R”) hypothesis argue that Paul quoted a letter from Corinth in vv.34-35 and refuted it in v.36. Supporters of the interpolation hypothesis regard the passage as a marginal gloss by a later author, inserted at one of two locations (after v.33 or v.40). The present work …
