Pmos Operational Amplifier Evaluation, William J. Spezzano Jan 1987

Pmos Operational Amplifier Evaluation, William J. Spezzano

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

The evaluation of a metal gate PMOS op amp, including verification of the integrated circuit layout and a check of the PMOS design rules, was performed. The SPICE deck was modified to include a mask error which was discovered and the resulting simulation compared to DC measurements. The results indicate design errors at the input stage of the op amp. Open loop simulations performed by SPICE also show design errors within the gain stage. Suggestions for a more thorough investigation of the design are given.

A Study Of Optical Waveguides, James Weaver Jan 1987

A Study Of Optical Waveguides, James Weaver

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

A planar optical waveguide has been produced by immersion a microscope slide (sodium rich) in molten KN03. The resulting K+ profile is due to an ion-exchange with Na+. The higher atomic number of K+ increases the index of refraction at the surface and therefore allows for the propagation of light by alternate total internal reflections. Methods for observing the K+ profile and measuring the refractive index are discussed, as well as the difficulties involved/ Also, suggestions for future experiments and characterizing techniques are given.

A Model For Automatic Optical Scaling Of Type Designs For Conventional And Digital Technology, Bridget Lynn Johnson Jan 1987

A Model For Automatic Optical Scaling Of Type Designs For Conventional And Digital Technology, Bridget Lynn Johnson

Theses

In the history of type design, two methods have been used to scale type-- to produce enlarged or reduced letterforms from a reference size. With original handcut fonts, designers performed optical scaling (scaling by eye) that varied the proportions of letterform features over a range of sizes in a nonlinear manner. That is, letterform feature proportions were size dependent. This was an entirely manual and intuitive process. More recently, however, the use of the lens, as well as computational and other technologies, has allowed letterforms to be scaled automatically from a reference character, a simple proportional enlargement or reduction. To …

An Introduction Of The Theory Of Nonlinear Error-Correcting Codes, Robert B. Nenno

Theses

Nonlinear error-correcting codes are the topic of this thesis. As a class of codes, it has been investigated far less than the class of linear error-correcting codes. While the latter have many practical advantages, it the former that contain the optimal error-correcting codes. In this project the theory (with illustrative examples) of currently known nonlinear codes is presented. Many definitions and theorems (often with their proofs) are presented thus providing the reader with the opportunity to experience the necessary level of mathematical rigor for good understanding of the subject. Also, the examples will give the reader the additional benefit of …

A Tool For Compiler Testing, Chung-Cho Oliver Cheng Jan 1987

A Tool For Compiler Testing, Chung-Cho Oliver Cheng

Theses

A tool for compiler testing is implemented. The tool is driven by a BNF grammar extended by a device called control flags to incorporate those parts of a language that are not controlled by context-free rules (for instance, use of declared names). The tool produced two sets of program strings such that each production in the grammar is used at least once. One set is produced by Purdom's algorithm. The other is produced by a new algorithm designed by the author which builds a tree and then produces a set of strings from it for compiler testing. The program strings …

A Comparative Study Of Four Major Knowledge Representation Techniques Used In Expert Systems With An Implementation In Prolog, Joann T. Hudgick Jan 1987

A Comparative Study Of Four Major Knowledge Representation Techniques Used In Expert Systems With An Implementation In Prolog, Joann T. Hudgick

Theses

Knowledge representation is a central issue in Artifical Intelligence (AI) research. In order to solve the diverse and complex problems encountered, one needs both a large amount of knowledge and some mechanism for the management and skillful utilization of that knowledge. The basic problem in knowledge representation is the development of an adequate formalism to represent that knowledge. In this thesis I will discuss four of the major techniques for representing knowledge in expert systems: first order logic, production rules, semantic networks, and frames. Using Prolog as the implementation language, I will demonstrate that all of the above mentioned representation …

Design, Fabrication And Implementation Of A Hash Table Processor, Robert Paul Ketrick Jan 1987

Design, Fabrication And Implementation Of A Hash Table Processor, Robert Paul Ketrick

Theses

Hash tables have been used frequently to implement organized data table storage. However, there is a great deal of overhead in executing the hash algorithm every time the table is accessed. Alternatively, a content addressable memory (CAM) is a hardware implementation of an organized data table. A CAM requires very complex hardware design for each memory cell and therefore yeilds a very low cell density on each chip. This requires a large number of expensive chips to implement a large hash table. In this thesis a simple hash function was designed into an integrated circuit using 4- micron NMOS technology. …

A Domain Specific Expert System Tool For Building Photofinishing Process Diagnostic Systems, King Choi

Theses

The knowledge-based method is a new and useful technique to build computer systems for applications which are heuristic rather than algorithmic in nature. This paper discusses how the approach can be applied to photofinishing process diagnostics. A prototype system for diagnosing Process E-6 for Kodak Ektachrome films is built to understand the knowledge structure and inferencing criteria for photofinishing process. The experience gained from building the prototype Process E-6 diagnostic system has been applied to the design of an expert system tool for building photofinishing process diagnostic systems without the direct involvement of a knowledge engineer.

Fric: An Expert System To Recognize Fricatives, Karen A. Atkinson Jan 1987
