Motion In Graphic Design, Yuh-Yun Peng
Motion In Graphic Design, Yuh-Yun Peng
Theses
This project analyzed how the psychological feeling of motion can be performed on a non-moving graphic design space. It focused on the visual expression, psychological interpretation and functional usability of motion in graphic design. It involved a methodological analysis of the structured interaction between motion approaches and graphic design elements. In order to represent the analysis and possible progression of this project, the Motion Card Pack was designed to supply the whole range of motion definitions including 64 strategies, which gave users detailed information about motion in graphic design. This pack also encourages users to use the cards as creativity …

Hotel Design: Renovation, Hye Sue Chong
Hotel Design: Renovation, Hye Sue Chong
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to design an urban hotel located in Seoul, the capital city of Korea. I used an existing hotel, named Kims, for this renovation project. The existing hotel consists of forty-eight guest rooms, one bar, one coffee shop, one restaurant and a lobby area. The coffee shop and the restaurant are placed in the same room separated by three-foot high partitions. Compared to other transient or residential hotels in Seoul and large cities in the United States. this four-story hotel with forty-eight guest rooms can be designated as a small hotel in scale. William S. …

Dreamscapes, Ingrid Mesa
Theses
The main purpose of this thesis is to experiment, investigate and incorporate different vehicles of visual communications, making them work together. The challenge is to work with the digital video medium, to create a video using the appropriate computer equipment and combining visual and sound effects which will complement and work to get her. The sound is going to be manipulated in such a way that will reflect and enhance the 2D visual imagery. This imagery will also be manipulated and animated using computer software in order to convey a message. Once the sound and the imagery are finalized, they …

Interactive Animated Storybook Based On Korean Folk Tale, Hyung-Joo Lee
Theses
The intended purpose of my project was to develop an interactive animated storybook for children based on a Korean folk tale. Unlike a traditional storybook, I created an interactive computer program for children with diverse interactive animations. I wanted to explore how multimedia design can be entertaining and educational simultaneously.
The New Thaipography, Chotima Vongviriyatham
The New Thaipography, Chotima Vongviriyatham
Theses
This thesis is about designing a new Thai typeface. The project attempts to increase Thai typefaces options for Thai designers. The range of existing Thai typeface selection is limited, for use in text and display situations. There are several problems of Thai typeface usage at both the display and text type level. This project focuses primarily on the development of a new typeface for use in display situations. Thai designers use a single typeface for a wide range of products without regard for the differences between the products. Through attempting to solve the problem of limited options, this project includes …

Women Typeface Designers, Laura Webber
Women Typeface Designers, Laura Webber
Theses
Nowhere is there a single, exclusive publication containing biographies, type specimens, and photographs of the many women typeface designers. From source to source, one will usually find the same names of male typeface designers repeated. However, one must refer to many sources to compile a list of women typeface designers. In an age of rapid access to all sorts of reference information, it seems silly that one must be forced to search many sources and possibly never find all they are looking for. This thesis project provides a single reference source of women typeface designers and samples of their typefaces …
Suggested Considerations For Creating A Coporate Style Manual, Melissa Gentile
Suggested Considerations For Creating A Coporate Style Manual, Melissa Gentile
Theses
Visual communication is the key to maintaining any kind of corporate style. Companies rely on a variety of visual aids to communicate their image to the public. The desired image that each company has of themselves can be communicated to the public through a corporate signature, a logotype, symbols, typefaces and corporate col ors. All of these visual communicators help the public to identify the company, its sub sidiaries, its activities and its involvement with the public. Companies often have so many visual aids that they have to be outlined in a corporate style manual. A corporate style manual takes …

Museum Of Formosan Aborigines, Yuan-Feng Cheng
Theses
In the beginning, the purpose of this thesis was to explore the feasibility of creating a computer-based visual museum. I wanted to experiment with 3-D interactivity, such as how to set up the cursor movement in a 3-D world and how to use 3-D animation in interactive multimedia. I wanted to use Native Americans as the subject of this 3-D museum project. After I sent my thesis proposal to our department, I found my classmate's project was about Native Americans also. Therefore, I decided on another topic. In July 1995, 1 went back to Taiwan to visit my friends. I …

Emotional Content In Gestural Process And Form, Robin Yates
Theses
The sculptures focus on the influences emotional content has in my work, and address processes and forms that feelings inspire. One of the main influences in my art is the spectacular Niagara Gorge; the eroded riverbed, the water, and the cliffs. In the documentation of my thesis investigation, I emphasize ritual of process. I realize that in preparing myself to work I set an aesthetic mode important to the development of form. I describe specifics concerning my process so it seems to the reader that they are directly involved while I am working. In reflection, I now realize that visual …

Optimizing Text-Intesive Documents For On-Screen Viewing Using The Model Of The Portable Document Format, Erin Hickey
Theses
Document portability programs transform electronic documents into a state that allows information to be viewed, annotated, and printed by any computer system, regardless of the original computer platform or software application used to create the primary document. In addition, portable documents maintain formatting, fonts and graphics as they appear in the original. Despite the unique opportunity these programs offer for distributing information, most portable document developers do not use the technology effectively. Poor font rendering and page sizes too large for easy navigation or comfortable monitor viewing make most portable documents impractical for pure electronic use. When a document is …

An Investigation Of Alternative Communication Methods To Face To Face Interaction Between Design And Client, Tanya Friedman
An Investigation Of Alternative Communication Methods To Face To Face Interaction Between Design And Client, Tanya Friedman
Theses
As technology becomes increasingly more sophisticated, means and demand for digital communication are increasing. The geographical expansion of the business world has made communication alternatives critical to working together more effectively. Face to face meetings may not be possible or the most cost and time efficient approach. Also, there is a move towards working at home, telecommuting, by using electronic communication for interaction (Fitzgerald 1993). Thus, electronic correspondence is becoming essential and we are witnessing a move towards higher performance and potential for communication alternatives. Knowing the options and their appropriateness is a competitive advantage. "In a information society dominated …

The Rochester Institute Of Technology: An Interactive Computer Disk, Lim Hee-Kyung
The Rochester Institute Of Technology: An Interactive Computer Disk, Lim Hee-Kyung
Theses
The nature of this thesis is to explore the possibilities of interactive animation. An animated, interactive program which shows various activities and programs of the Rochester Institute of Technology, (R.I.T.), is the finished product. R.I.T's history, upstate New York location, and academic philosophies are incorporated. The interactive disk contains information about the various programs the college offers, as well as, many examples of actual student work. It also shows these students creating their projects. In their own words, they tell about their lives at R.I.T., both in and out of the classroom. Faculty and staff also offer their views, lending …
