Error Sentinel: A Rule-Based Spreadsheet Program For Intelligent Data Entry, Error Correction, And Curation, Kyle Dewey Jun 2011

Error Sentinel: A Rule-Based Spreadsheet Program For Intelligent Data Entry, Error Correction, And Curation, Kyle Dewey

Theses

Within the biological sciences, spreadsheets are commonly used as a data entry and storage medium. While this practice is simple and generally well understood, the unrestrained flexibility of the spreadsheet medium allows errors to accumulate and potentially propagate. Such errors impede accurate analysis, hindering research. The underlying problem is that the error correction facilities of typical spreadsheet programs are lackluster at best, if they exist at all. For this reason, Error Sentinel was developed. Error Sentinel is a spreadsheet program with programmable error correction facilities. These facilities allow users to define exactly what clean data is, along with corrections for …

Intimate Immensity, Henrik Søderstrøm Jun 2011

Intimate Immensity, Henrik Søderstrøm

Theses

The small house that comprises my visual thesis, made of simple materials reclaimed from junk piles and old houses, was made as worship to the God who spoke the world into existence. This writing is a playful counterpart to my artwork. Water has an amazing ability to transpose itself fluidly across borders, from the atmosphere to the ground to the cells in your body. Its movement is defiant of divisions as it carries nutrients through layers of compost, from rotting biomass to new sprouts. My process of absorbing and using materials is inspired by this cycling. I am interested in …

Extragradient Methods For Elliptic Inverse Problems And Image Denoising, James Oleksyn Jun 2011

Extragradient Methods For Elliptic Inverse Problems And Image Denoising, James Oleksyn

Theses

Numerous mathematical models in applied mathematics can be expressed as a partial differential equation involving certain coefficients. These coefficients are known and they describe some physical properties of the model. The direct problem in this context is to solve the partial differential equation. By contrast, an inverse problem asks for the identification of the variable coefficients when a certain measurement of a solution of the partial differential equation is available. One of the most commonly used approaches for solving this inverse problem is by posing a constrained minimization problem which can be written as a variational inequality. The main contribution …

Solving Nonrigid Registration With Sliding And Bending Boundary Conditions, Troy Winkstern Jun 2011

Solving Nonrigid Registration With Sliding And Bending Boundary Conditions, Troy Winkstern

Theses

In the past 20 years, there have been significant advances in the use of medical imaging in patient care. Today, image registration is being used by doctors all over the world to compare computed tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), X-rays, Ultrasound (US), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and/or Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) images of their patients from different times to formulate an accurate diagnosis. Mathematically, image registration can be posed as an initial boundary value problem (IBVP). When applied to medical imaging, the current boundary conditions being used are not physically meaningful. We are proposing two new boundary …

Burnout As A Function Of Eysenck’S Neuroticism Factor In Teachers Working With Children With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Shannon Prince

Theses

The purpose of this study is to observe the level of neuroticism in special education teachers working with children with Emotional/Behavioral Disorders (EBD) and how it is related to the level of burnout (i.e., chronic state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion; Center & Steventon, 2001) they experience. Two surveys, Friedman's Questionnaire on Teacher Burnout and Eysenck's Personality Questionnaire Brief Version, were delivered to special education teachers working with EBD students in self-contained classrooms in Western New York. The data were analyzed by correlating the teachers' level of neuroticism with their level of burnout. Results indicated a significant correlation between …

Modeling The Capacitive Behavior Of Coplanar Striplines And Coplanar Waveguides Using Simple Functions, Jeffrey Abbott Jun 2011

Modeling The Capacitive Behavior Of Coplanar Striplines And Coplanar Waveguides Using Simple Functions, Jeffrey Abbott

Theses

The coplanar waveguide (CPW) structure has been popular for Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) design due to the wide versatility of its designable impedance. Since its introduction in 1969, it has been utilized in a wide range of applications and consequently has been analyzed extensively for its electrical characteristics. Other planar structures with similar geometries have also received much attention, including the conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CBCPW) and coplanar stripline (CPS). A common approach for analyzing these planar structures, assuming quasi-TEM mode of operation, involves the use of conformal mapping techniques. The traditional conformal mappings realize special functions allowing for problems …

Fabrication And Life Cycle Assessment Of Organic Photovoltaics, Annick Anctil Jun 2011

Fabrication And Life Cycle Assessment Of Organic Photovoltaics, Annick Anctil

Theses

Increasing demand for renewable energy has resulted in a new interest for alternative technologies such as organic photovoltaics. With efficiencies exceeding 8% for both polymer and small molecule photovoltaics, organic photovoltaics are now being commercialized due to their flexibility and low weight which allow for their adoption in new applications such as portable electronics, smart fabrics, and building-integrated photovoltaics. To date, most research efforts have been focused on increasing power efficiency with little assessment of potential negative impacts associated with their large scale production. It is generally assumed that organic photovoltaics have low environmental impacts and are by nature inexpensive …

Effect Of Temperature On The In-Plane Permeability Of The Gas Diffusion Layer Of A Pem Fuel Cell, Rupak Banerjee

Theses

Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells convert hydrogen into water by causing electrochemical reaction with oxygen, producing an electric current which can be used to power electric motors. This is seen as a viable alternative to the Internal Combustion Engine which operates on fossil fuels and is often blamed for contribution to the global climate change. Due to the low temperature operation, compared to other forms of fuel cells, it is possible to adapt the PEM Fuel Cell for automotive application. By running on hydrogen, the PEM Fuel Cell promises to enable a clean mode of transport. Water vapor transport …

Investigating Controller Performance In Hybrid Sofc Systems In The Presence Of Unknown Nonlinearities, William Nowak Jr Jun 2011

Investigating Controller Performance In Hybrid Sofc Systems In The Presence Of Unknown Nonlinearities, William Nowak Jr

Theses

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are energy conversion devices that offer many benefits over various other fuel cell types as a result of high operating temperatures (800-1000 °C). Unfortunately, SOFCs tend to possess poor load following capabilities due to delays along the fuel path and complex system dynamics. Maintaining safe operating conditions during changes in power demand is addressed using a controller designed to regulate the fuel cell current based on fuel flow measurement. In order to compensate for the resulting mismatch between demanded and delivered power, the SOFC system is hybridized with an energy storage device, such as an …

Dynamical Processes Near The Super Massive Black Hole At The Galactic Center, Fabio Antonini Jun 2011

Dynamical Processes Near The Super Massive Black Hole At The Galactic Center, Fabio Antonini

Theses

Observations of the stellar environment near the Galactic center provide the strongest empirical evidence for the existence of massive black holes in the Universe. Theoretical models of the Milky Way nuclear star cluster fail to explain numerous properties of such environment, including the presence of very young stars close to the super massive black hole (SMBH) and the more recent discovery of a parsec-scale core in the central distribution of the bright late-type (old) stars. In this thesis we present a theoretical study of dynamical processes near the Galactic center, strongly related to these issues. Using different numerical techniques we …

Instant communication, GPS navigation, remote banking, and even online shopping are only a few of the activities that can be performed from almost anywhere. However, these conveniences may come at the cost of physical security since portable devices are often operated in a public environment where there is a possibility of being physically exposed or obtained by untrustworthy users. While it is a common practice to secure the data that is transferred from …

Cuda Accelerated Cone‐Beam Reconstruction, Albert Sze Jun 2011

Cuda Accelerated Cone‐Beam Reconstruction, Albert Sze

Theses

Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is an imaging method that reconstructs a 3D representation of the object from its 2D X-ray images. It is an important diagnostic tool in the medical field, especially dentistry. However, most 3D reconstruction algorithms are computationally intensive and time consuming; this limitation constrains the use of CBCT. In recent years, high-end graphics cards, such as the ones powered by NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs), are able to perform general purpose computation. Due to the highly parallel nature of the 3D reconstruction algorithms, it is possible to implement these algorithms on the GPU to reduce the processing …

Experimental Investigation Into Novel Methods Of Reliable And Secure On-Body Communications With Low System Overheads, Jeffrey Wilczewski

Theses

Until recently the concept of wearable biosensors for purposes of medical monitoring was restricted to "wired" sensor applications. Recent advances in electronics and wireless communications have made the possibility of removing the "wire" from sensor applications a possibility. These advances have led to the development of small scale, wearable, sensing and communication platforms that can be placed on the human body creating the foundation for a Body Sensor Network (BSN). Body Sensor Networks aim to remove the restrictions that traditional wired sensors impose. The anticipation is that BSNs will permit the monitoring of physiological signals in any environment without limitation, …

Spherical Distance Metrics Applied To Protein Structure Classification, James Defelice May 2011

Spherical Distance Metrics Applied To Protein Structure Classification, James Defelice

Theses

Observed protein structures usually represent energetically favorable conformations. While not all observed structures are necessarily functional, it is generally agreed that protein structure is closely related to protein function. Given a collection of proteins sharing a common global structure, variations in their local structures at specific, critical locations may result in different biological functions. Structural relationships among proteins are important in the study of the evolution of proteins as well as in drug design and development. Analysis of geometrical 3D protein structure has been shown to be effective with respect to classifying proteins. Prior work has shown that the Double …

Development Of A Deep Submicron Fabrication Process For Tunneling Field Effect Transistors, Michael Barth May 2011

Development Of A Deep Submicron Fabrication Process For Tunneling Field Effect Transistors, Michael Barth

Theses

The requirements placed upon next-generation devices include high on-state current, low power supply voltages, and low subthreshold swing. Tunneling Field Effect Transistors (TFETs) have been of recent interest because they have the potential to fulfill these requirements. The TFET is a gated tunnel junction. The TFET operates by modulating the probability of band-to-band tunneling between the source and the channel of the device. When the tunnel transistor is off, there is a potential barrier between the source and the channel. The width of this potential barrier is large enough to prevent electrons tunneling from the valence to conduction bands, the …

Efficient Collision Resolution Protocol For Highly Populated Wireless Networks, Ruslan Dautov May 2011

Efficient Collision Resolution Protocol For Highly Populated Wireless Networks, Ruslan Dautov

Theses

An efficient Medium access control (MAC) protocol is an important part of every wireless system. It prevents multiple devices from accessing the channel at the same time by defining rules for orderly access. Due to the fact that wireless networks have received enormous popularity in the last 10 - 15 years, number of users in these networks increased dramatically. Thus, support of large user population for modern MAC protocol is not an option anymore but a necessity, especially for dense Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). This work proposes a novel random MAC protocol for wireless networks named BCSMA/CA that can provide …
