Prototype Software For Colorant Formulation Using Gamblin Conservation Colors, Marissa Haddock Sep 2011

Prototype Software For Colorant Formulation Using Gamblin Conservation Colors, Marissa Haddock

Theses

When selecting pigments from a large set for restorative inpainting, it can often be challenging to create a mixture that will provide an exact match to the original artwork under a range of viewing and illumination conditions. In this research, a prototype computer program was developed that will aid the user by providing a color match and paint recipe that exhibits minimal metamerism when compared to the original artwork. The Gamblin Conservation Colors, a set of 43 colorants specially formulated for inpainting, were characterized in terms of their optical properties, absorption and scattering, according to Kubelka-Munk turbid media theory. Formulations …

Kikimasu (Listen), Andrew Frueh Sep 2011

Kikimasu (Listen), Andrew Frueh

Theses

Why do we create art? It is a profound question, and not one I ever intended to explore in the creation of my thesis film. However, coming to a better understanding of what the answer is for me was perhaps the most valuable lesson I learned from the entire project. Kikimasu was not a film that followed a linear progression from start to finish. In many ways, its conception was every bit as amorphous as the shifting void in the film. It began as a vastly larger project in scope, with primarily commercial goals in mind. But it ended as …

A Dynamic Inventory Optimization Method Applied To Printer Fleet Management, Surya Saripalli Sep 2011

A Dynamic Inventory Optimization Method Applied To Printer Fleet Management, Surya Saripalli

Theses

Current optimization methods for inventory management of toner cartridges for printer fleets typically focus on aggregate cartridge demand. However, with the development of printer technology, toner consumption algorithms are being developed which can accurately quantify the amount of toner that has been consumed over time, based on print job characteristics. This research introduces a dynamic inventory optimization approach for a fleet of printers over a rolling time horizon. Given, the consumption algorithm for the printer system, the cumulative toner consumed per cartridge per printer can be tracked. A forecasting method is developed which utilizes this toner consumption data for individual …

New Amusement Rides: Platforms For Parents And Children To Share Fun, Ming Chiang Sep 2011

New Amusement Rides: Platforms For Parents And Children To Share Fun, Ming Chiang

Theses

Since Bakken, the world's first amusement park, opened in 1583 at Klampenborg, Denmark, amusement parks have become a fun place for people to spend quality time with family. Early versions of American amusement parks in the United States entertained patrons by providing picnic groves, concert halls and events like fireworks. However, with the rapid evolution of technology, the primary characteristic of many of today's parks are rides which are, first and foremost, breathtaking. In other words, amusement parks tend to gratify a desire for thrills rather than provide a space for parents and children to enjoy spending time and playing …

Fleeting, Alysia Grummert Sep 2011

Fleeting, Alysia Grummert

Theses

Fleeting, is a wall installation composed of individual slabs of porcelain inspired by the forms of the foliage that grew on the farm where I was raised. The seemingly wind-blown elements of this work are lightly textured and blushed with muted tints of color. This work celebrates a quiet, fragile beauty through the use of delicate, rhythmic forms. Some of the forms appear to take flight as they emerge from the wall. The mood of this piece expresses a season moving on. The arrangement of this wall piece captures a sense of migration as the eye is directed to follow …

Theses

This capstone project was designed to develop and provide knowledge and identify skills for local inactive NGOs [Nongovernmental Organizations] only on how to improve on finance management and HR. The project does not intend to teach local NGOs fundraising and voluntarism. The action plan to implement the mission statement demands a more concrete step towards opening a new NGO, named the Center for NGO Development (CND). This organization, if executed properly, will be a resource and full-service training center to help other local NGOs strengthen internal finance and HR capacities. It is anticipated that CND will succeed and enlarge its …

Proximal Point Methods For Inverse Problems, Marc Paulhamus Aug 2011

Proximal Point Methods For Inverse Problems, Marc Paulhamus

Theses

Numerous mathematical models in applied mathematics can be expressed as a partial differential equation involving certain coefficients. These coefficients are known and they describe some physical properties of the model. The direct problem in this context is to solve the partial differential equation. By contrast, an inverse problem asks for the identification of the variable coefficients when a certain measurement of a solution of the partial differential equation is available. One of the most commonly used approaches for solving this inverse problem is by posing a constrained minimization problem which can be written as a variational inequality. This paper investigates …

Optimizations And Applications In Head-Mounted Video-Based Eye Tracking, Feng Li Aug 2011

Optimizations And Applications In Head-Mounted Video-Based Eye Tracking, Feng Li

Theses

Video-based eye tracking techniques have become increasingly attractive in many research fields, such as visual perception and human-computer interface design. The technique primarily relies on the positional difference between the center of the eye's pupil and the first-surface reflection at the cornea, the corneal reflection (CR). This difference vector is mapped to determine an observer's point of regard (POR). In current head-mounted video-based eye trackers, the systems are limited in several aspects, such as inadequate measurement range and misdetection of eye features (pupil and CR). This research first proposes a new `structured illumination' configuration, using multiple IREDs to illuminate the …

‘En Pathos’, John Remo Aug 2011

‘En Pathos’, John Remo

Theses

`en pathos ` A Greek term that translates to ` in passion ` . The human figure is a timeless and classic subject that has always bestirred feelings of passion in the hearts of both artist and viewer. It can easily take a lifetime's artistic endeavors to master just a tiny aspect of the figure's potential. More important than the literal realm of the figure, there also lies a subjective realm, a place where my work is created and lives.....a place `between'. In trying to capture the essence of the human figure, each artistic medium offers its own unique visual …

Opening Doors Or Creating Barriers?: The Influence Of Interpreters On Levels Of Communication Apprehension Among Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students, Jenna Williams

Theses

Classroom communication apprehension (CA) affects roughly 70% of undergraduate college students (Bowers, 1986, p. 373). After a discussion of CA as a theory, a survey tool is presented to measure if there is a difference in the amount and type of CA experienced by deaf and hard-of-hearing college students when compared to their hearing peers. The survey includes McCroskey's PRCA-24 tool for measuring CA and several additional questions on how the presence of a sign language interpreter influences levels of classroom CA. The survey's 155 respondents report a statistically significant difference in the amount and type of CA experienced. Limitations …

Culturally Sensitive Document Design For An Eastern Asia Audience: Comprehension And Preference, Merridith Smith Aug 2011

Culturally Sensitive Document Design For An Eastern Asia Audience: Comprehension And Preference, Merridith Smith

A Study Of Phylogenetic Trees Versus Networks To Objectively Identify Haplogroups In Mitochondrial Dna, Melissa Ruda Aug 2011

A Study Of Phylogenetic Trees Versus Networks To Objectively Identify Haplogroups In Mitochondrial Dna, Melissa Ruda

Theses

Mitochondrial DNA is important in the studies of population, medicine, migration, and forensics, as well as a few other disciplines. Further insight on grouping mtDNA sequences could give insight on identifying genetic variation that causes susceptibility to disease, more personalized medicines, or more effective forensic analysis. Mitochondrial DNA is currently grouped into haplogroups determined from phylogenetic tree analysis. Phylogenetic tree analysis may not be the optimal solution for mtDNA because they work better for data above the species level, to show population relationships, not sequences that only differ by a few nucleotides. To compare both analysis, sample data was obtained …

Reproducing Wooden And Marble Patterns Using Multi-Channel Icc Profile, Saurabh Chaturvedi Aug 2011

Reproducing Wooden And Marble Patterns Using Multi-Channel Icc Profile, Saurabh Chaturvedi

Theses

Gravure can reproduce a high quality images because of its capacity to lay down ink films of variable thickness, especially for long runs and high color saturation; this aspect provides a very high shadow detail just like photograph. Many organizations have tried to standardize printing like Fogra, ISO, and more. Larger gamut are being built to cover more out-of-gamut colors, but designs, graphics and colorfulness of the products, are limited due to the involvement of several process variables. In publication printing, only four colors of ink are used: yellow, magenta, cyan, and black. CMYK primaries are generally used because the …

Investigating Data Throughput And Partial Dynamic Reconfiguration In A Commodity Fpga Cluster Framework, Nicholas Palladino Aug 2011

Investigating Data Throughput And Partial Dynamic Reconfiguration In A Commodity Fpga Cluster Framework, Nicholas Palladino

Theses

There are many computational kernels where parallelism can be exploited in applica- tion specific hardware, yielding significant speedup over a general purpose processor based solution. Commodity cluster computing technologies have been combined with FPGA co- processors, resulting in even greater performance capability through the exploitation of multiple levels of parallelism. One particularly economic solution both in terms of cost and power consumption is to cluster hybrid FPGAs with commodity network intercon- nects. Hybrid FPGAs combine embedded microprocessors with reconfigurable hardware resources on a single chip offering lower power consumption and cost compared to a tra- ditional I/O bus FPGA coprocessor …

Routing Protocol Evaluation And Development Of A Fully Functional Simulation Environment For Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Matthew Prokop Aug 2011

Routing Protocol Evaluation And Development Of A Fully Functional Simulation Environment For Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Matthew Prokop

Theses

A Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) is an area of wireless technologies that are attracting a great deal of interest. There are still several areas of VANETS, such as medium access control, security and routing protocols, that lack large amounts of research. There is also a lack of freely available simulators that can quickly and accurately simulate VANETs. One of the two main goals of this thesis was to develop a freely available VANET simulator and to evaluate popular mobile ad-hoc network routing protocols in several VANET scenarios. The VANET simulator consisted of a network simulator, a traffic (mobility simulator) and …

Tunable Micro-Electro Mechanical Fabry Perot Etalon, Annette Rivas Aug 2011

Tunable Micro-Electro Mechanical Fabry Perot Etalon, Annette Rivas

Theses

Many different devices capable of spectral wavelength collection exist. The device we propose is an array of individually tunable MEMS Fabry Perot etalons capable of scanning from 400nm to 750nm as commanded. Typically when Fabry Perot devices are used additional etalons are placed in series to reject extra modes that would otherwise be passed by a single etalon. The device that is examined rejects the extra modes without the need for an extensive filtering scheme because the optical path length is held to ½ wavelength. The device proposed is thermally actuated. It has been modeled in COMSOL and shows even …

Computing Hilbert Functions Using The Syzygy And Lcm-Lattice Methods, Maria Barouti Aug 2011

Computing Hilbert Functions Using The Syzygy And Lcm-Lattice Methods, Maria Barouti

Theses

The Hilbert function for any graded module over a field k is defined by the dimension of all of the summands M_b, where b indicates the graded component being considered. One standard approach to computing the Hilbert function is to come up with a free-resolution for the graded module M and another is via a Hilbert power series which serves as a generating function. Using combinatorics and homological algebra we develop three alternative ways to generate the values of a Hilbert function when the graded module is a quotient ring over a field. Two of these approaches (which we've called …
