A Night In The Jungle, Ignacio Barrios
A Night In The Jungle, Ignacio Barrios
Theses
The 3D short film "A Night In The Jungle" is a character animation piece that tells the very simple story of a monkey trying to enjoy a good night's sleep in the deep of the jungle, only to be interrupted by a snoring sloth that falls near him. The project was completed using Autodesk Maya and Adobe Creative Suite. The film is purposely dialogue-free, and has the straightforward goal of entertaining its audience with classic animated physical comedy in the vein of the MGM and Warner shorts from the golden era. Although all of the imagery in the film is …
Water Breakthrough Behavior And Gdl Degradation Mechanisms In A Pem Fuel Cell, Matthew Garofalo
Water Breakthrough Behavior And Gdl Degradation Mechanisms In A Pem Fuel Cell, Matthew Garofalo
Theses
The water that exists within the porous components of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) during operation affects the performance characteristics of the fuel cell. The water transport processes through the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and microporous layer (MPL) are suspected to change over the cell lifetime due to material degradation mechanisms. The understanding of how GDL degradation affects its water transport mechanisms is needed so that GDL and MPL material can be optimized for maximum PEMFC performance and durability. One of these water transport mechanisms is capillary action. Measuring the capillary breakthrough pressure (CBP) is a novel characterization …
Through Place, Sarah Newman
Through Place, Sarah Newman
Theses
Through Place is comprised of diverse, sometimes un-idyllic landscapes. Many of the pictures contain a trace--an alteration to the land, a specter of human presence. Yet these marks are pictured inclusively; the scenes are explored with interest and without judgment. They offer a reformulation of the division between the human and the natural, wherein "the natural" draws the largest circle. The images are made in geographically and culturally diverse places (from the Peruvian Amazon to ski mountains in California). "Place" becomes replaced by interpretation, fiction: representations that intermingle with our own agency, expectations, and memories.
Study Of Poly(Acrylic Acid) Grafted Onto Polymer Surfaces Modified By Gas Phase Oxidation Techniques, Ameya Khot
Study Of Poly(Acrylic Acid) Grafted Onto Polymer Surfaces Modified By Gas Phase Oxidation Techniques, Ameya Khot
Theses
Polystyrene (PS) has a wide range of technological applications due to the excellent bulk properties, but does not possess the unique surface properties for applications that require wettability, printability or cell adhesion. The following work focuses on surface modification of polystyrene by different techniques to increase the surface energy and hydrophilicity. UV photo-oxidation of polystyrene was achieved with 253.7 nm and 253.7/184.9 nm radiation in the presence of an atmospheric pressure of oxygen. Contact angle measurements were performed to confirm the surface hydrophilicity with increase in treatment times. Ozone treatment of polystyrene surface was also performed in absence of radiation. …
Scalable Gpu Acceleration Of B-Spline Signal Processing Operations, Alexander Karantza
Scalable Gpu Acceleration Of B-Spline Signal Processing Operations, Alexander Karantza
Theses
B-Splines are a useful tool in signal processing, and are widely used in the analysis of two and three-dimensional images. B-Splines provide a continuous representation of the signal, image, or volume, which is useful for interpolation, resampling, noise removal, and differentiation - all important steps in many signal processing algorithms. These splines are defined entirely by an array of coefficients that is roughly the same size as the original signal and of values in the same order of magnitude, making storage and representation trivial. What is not trivial, however, is the quick calculation and processing of those coefficients, especially for …

Real-Time Content-Aware Video Retargeting On The Android Platform For Tunnel Vision Assistance, Thomas Knack
Theses
As mobile devices continue to rise in popularity, advances in overall mobile device processing power lead to further expansion of their capabilities. This, coupled with the fact that many people suffer from low vision, leaves substantial room for advancing mobile development for low vision assistance. Computer vision is capable of assisting and accommodating individuals with blind spots or tunnel vision by extracting the necessary information and presenting it to the user in a manner they are able to visualize. Such a system would enable individuals with low vision to function with greater ease. Additionally, offering assistance on a mobile platform …
Error Analysis Of Sequence Modeling For Projecting Cyber Attacks, Venkata Mudireddy
Error Analysis Of Sequence Modeling For Projecting Cyber Attacks, Venkata Mudireddy
Theses
Intrusion Detection System (IDS) has become an integral component in the field of network security. Prior research has focused on developing efficient IDSs and correlating attacks as Attack Tracks. To enhance the network analyst's situational awareness, sequence modeling techniques like Variable Length Markov Models (VLMM) have been used to project likely future attacks. However, such projections are made assuming that the IDSs detect each and every attack action, which is not viable in reality. An IDS could miss an attack due to loss of packets or improper traffic analysis, or when an attacker evades detection by employing obfuscation techniques. Such …

Anxious Care, Shara Burrows
Theses
The intent of my thesis is to translate objects that relate to our bodies into glass and mixed media. The purpose of this endeavor is to create a dialogue between media and form about the fragile and dependent nature of human relationships. Glass breaks and it can be repaired. Glass objects must be handled with care. The material translation of functional objects into fragile glass forms supports the content of my work. The basic premise of my thesis is the universality of the human experience of loss. Everyone has or at some time will experience the death of a loved …

With the upturn in living standards and increasing work stress, people have started to pay more attention to how happy they feel in their daily lives. Evaluating people's happiness is becoming increasingly important in scientific fields. The focus of this thesis is to build a rational happiness function and to do simulations on several kinds of social networks related to the real world in a trading model with only two types of goods but no common currency. The purpose of the simulations is to seek the equilibrium points of the trading system. For this model, the parameters in the function …
Verification And Validation Of A Theoretical Model Of A Direct Drive Valve-Controlled Electrohydrostatic Actuator For Primary Flight Control, Heather Hussain
Verification And Validation Of A Theoretical Model Of A Direct Drive Valve-Controlled Electrohydrostatic Actuator For Primary Flight Control, Heather Hussain
Theses
In this work, a theoretical parametric nonlinear model for a hybrid variable pressure actuator was verified through dynamic system modeling techniques and validated using experimental data. The hybrid configuration under investigation combines design features of a valve-controlled hydraulic actuator and an electrohydrostatic actuator resulting in a variable pressure hydraulic actuator. A comparison analysis is conducted to determine the performance and, more specifically, power characteristics of the hybrid configuration relative to the two types of conventional flight control actuation - valve-controlled actuators and electrohydrostatic actuators. The hybrid configuration is unique in the sense that it allows for independent localized hydraulic system …
Accelerating Noninvasive Transmural Electrophysiological Imaging With Cuda, Martin Corraine
Accelerating Noninvasive Transmural Electrophysiological Imaging With Cuda, Martin Corraine
Theses
The human heart is a vital muscle of the body. Abnormalities in the heart can disrupt its normal operation. One such abnormality that affects the middle layer of the heart wall (myocardium) is called myocardial scars. Just like any tissue in the body, damage to healthy tissue will trigger scar tissue to form. Normally this scar tissue is benign. However, myocardial scars can disrupt the heart's normal operation by changing the electrical properties of the myocardium. It is the most common cause of ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. Leading edge research has developed a technique called Noninvasive Transmural Electrophysiological …

My Direct Reports: Office Toys For Young Adults., Yunglin Tsun
Theses
Today, working in an office is more challenging than ever. The space is often filled with tension and the work requires people to make decisions and perform their duties in a fast-paced environment. To ease anxiety and keep productivity high, companies often encourage employees to bring toys to their office. However, in the current market, toys for grownups often miss the mark: most of them still use the same design language as children's toys. As adults, we appreciate objects differently. How can we as designers extract the spirit of a toy, then incorporate it into products that appeal to grown-ups …
The Development Of Nanomaterials For High Performance Lithium Ion Battery Anodes, Roberta Dileo
The Development Of Nanomaterials For High Performance Lithium Ion Battery Anodes, Roberta Dileo
Theses
Many industries spanning macro to micro applications need advanced energy storage capabilities and Li+ batteries are the prevalent technology to meet those demands. High Li+ capacity semiconductor materials (e.g. Si, Ge) in concert with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been investigated as alternative materials for Li+ batteries. Nanomaterials offer many advantages to high performance batteries by increasing storage capacities, Li+ diffusion, and more adequately accommodating volumetric expansion that occurs in cycling. Silicon and Ge are known to have very high Li+ storage capacities of 4200 and 1600 mAh/g, respectively, and can be used in combination with CNTs to form free-standing anodes. …
A Statistical Phonon Transport Model For Thermal Transport In Cyrstalline Materials From The Diffuse To Ballistic Regime, Thomas Iii Brown
A Statistical Phonon Transport Model For Thermal Transport In Cyrstalline Materials From The Diffuse To Ballistic Regime, Thomas Iii Brown
Theses
Phonon transport in micro- nanoscale crystalline materials can be well modeled by the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE). The complexities associated with solving the BTE have led to the development of various numerical models to simulate phonon transport. These models have been applied to predict thermal transport from the di¤use to ballistic regime. While some success using techniques such as the Monte Carlo method has been achieved, there are still a significant number of approximations related to the intricacies of phonon transport that must be more accurately modeled for better predictions of thermal transport at reduced length scales. The objective of …
Perceptually Optimized Real-Time Computer Graphics, Jeffrey Smith
Perceptually Optimized Real-Time Computer Graphics, Jeffrey Smith
Theses
Perceptual optimization, the application of human visual perception models to remove imperceptible components in a graphics system, has been proven effective in achieving significant computational speedup. Previous implementations of this technique have focused on spatial level of detail reduction, which typically results in noticeable degradation of image quality. This thesis introduces refresh rate modulation (RRM), a novel perceptual optimization technique that produces better performance enhancement while more effectively preserving image quality and resolving static scene elements in full detail. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique, a graphics framework has been developed that interfaces with eye tracking hardware …

A Bed Of Butterflies, Erica Hardy
A Bed Of Butterflies, Erica Hardy
Theses
Why animate that? This question was posed to us animation students during our first week in graduate school. When one considers the amount of time, energy and money it takes to create an animated piece it is a good question to ask before starting. In the spring of 2009 I found myself asking this very question as I considered the story that I wanted to use for my thesis film. "A Bed of Butterflies" is a personal family story about my father's brother Keith, who died at the age of twenty-two of kidney failure. A real story about real people …
Force, Lee Crowley
Force, Lee Crowley
Theses
Energy, force, matter and volume are fundamental characteristics of the universe. These defining characteristics exist in all scales and can be found throughout space. My work considers the actions and reactions of forces and how movements are challenged by various energies. My creative investigations began by looking at the world in its entirety and considering both natural and man-made forces. I approached the work with the intent to alter what we recognize as structure and strength, and to act upon it, to challenge its integrity and create a progression of an implied action. Influenced by pioneers in the photographic capture …

My work is driven by the metaphysical and the potential for healing through the manipulation of energy. Points of research include the enso (the only symbol used in Zen Buddhism), which uses the circle as a symbol of wholeness, divinity, and enlightenment. The writings of Alex Grey, Eckhart Tolle and the work of Ann Hamilton will also be investigated. I plan to create work from turned wooden vortex forms, the shapes of which are based on the movement of energy within the body. These objects will be transformed from wood, through rubber, wax, plaster, iron, bronze to cast, and blown …

Investigation Of Digital Printing Variation In A Production Environment, Pierre Urbain
Investigation Of Digital Printing Variation In A Production Environment, Pierre Urbain
Theses
Today, conventional printing processes such as offset lithography, gravure and flexography are not the only processes available to satisfy the print buyers' needs. Digital printing is now able to rival offset quality, and has taken a substantial position in the commercial and publication printing market. Conventional printing technologies have been extensively studied and standardized. The principal international standards for conventional technologies, the ISO12647 series, specify aims and tolerances that are process based. Digital printing is more difficult to standardize because its diversity of technologies and consumables make the creation of process-based aims nearly impossible. A new approach to standardization, conformance …
Print-To-Proof Visual Match Using Papers With Optical Brightening Agents, Carlos Carazo
Print-To-Proof Visual Match Using Papers With Optical Brightening Agents, Carlos Carazo
Theses
Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs) are chemicals added to paper pulp whose purpose is to brighten the white point of the paper. Adding OBAs results in a brighter white, increased tonal range, and more chromatic colors. However, adding OBAs can also create problems in visual print-to-proof match where proofing substrates do not contain OBAs. Visual print-to-proof match is the final judge of conformance in a print business. When printing and proofing in conformance to standards and specifications on non-OBA papers, there is visual match between the print and the proof. Printing on OBA loaded papers causes two main problems: (1) difficulty …

Printing Standards And Certification Survey In The Indian Printing Industry, Lekha Lokhande
Theses
The use of graphic arts standards in the global printing industry is increasing as printers discover that the effective use of standards allows them to produce high quality printed goods at competitive costs. This trend is most advanced in Europe, but is also visible in North America and Asia. Despite the fact International Standards such as ISO 9001 have been adopted by the Indian industry at large, the extent to which the Indian printing industry has adopted graphic arts standards is largely unknown. This gap was recognized in 2010 by the Indian Technical Advisory Group for Graphic Arts Standards when …
