Theses

Ideas of human interaction and levels of physical construction touched upon in geometry and physics have saturated my practice for many years. Having come from a small town in Virginia and moving to a big city like Chicago, I was confronted with massive amounts of people, ideas, cultures, and stimuli of which I had never before conceived. I realized that how we interact as people is a similar dynamic found in molecular interaction. This same interaction takes place in celestial formation, plant growth, decomposition, and even emotion. As I came to terms with my own presence in the world, my …

An Evaluation Of Multispectral Earth-Observing Multi-Aperture Telescope Designs For Target Detection And Characterization, Jason Smith Jul 2012

An Evaluation Of Multispectral Earth-Observing Multi-Aperture Telescope Designs For Target Detection And Characterization, Jason Smith

Theses

Earth-observing satellites have fundamental size and weight design limits since they must be launched into space. These limits serve to constrain the spatial resolutions that such imaging systems can achieve with traditional telescope design strategies. Segmented and sparse-aperture imaging system designs may offer solutions to this problem. Segmented and sparse-aperture designs can be viewed as competing technologies; both approaches offer solutions for achieving finer resolution imaging from space. Segmented-aperture systems offer greater fill factor, and therefore greater signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), for a given encircled diameter than their sparse aperture counterparts, though their larger segments often suffer from greater optical aberration …

Students Fail To Transfer Knowledge Of Chromosome Structure To Topics Pertaining To Cell Division, Dina L. Newman, Christina M. Catavero, Leslie Kate Wright Jul 2012

Students Fail To Transfer Knowledge Of Chromosome Structure To Topics Pertaining To Cell Division, Dina L. Newman, Christina M. Catavero, Leslie Kate Wright

Articles

Cellular processes that rely on knowledge of molecular behavior are difficult for students to comprehend. For example, thorough understanding of meiosis requires students to integrate several complex concepts related to chromosome structure and function. Using a grounded theory approach, we have unified classroom observations, assessment data, and in-depth interviews under the theory of knowledge transfer to explain student difficulties with concepts related to chromosomal behavior. In this paper, we show that students typically understand basic chromosome structure but do not activate cognitive resources that would allow them to explain macromolecular phenomena (e.g., homologous pairing during meiosis). To improve understanding of …

A Framework For The Intergration Of System Engineering And Functional Analysis Techniques To The Goal And Scope Of Life Cycle Assessment, Maria Fumagalli Jul 2012

A Framework For The Intergration Of System Engineering And Functional Analysis Techniques To The Goal And Scope Of Life Cycle Assessment, Maria Fumagalli

Theses

With the increased concern over the impact that products and processes have on the environment, tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) have been developed to assess environmental impacts. However, several issues are present in this tool; chief among them is the difficulty of comparing LCA studies. The attributed reasons for this issue are the lack of standardized assumptions and practices, the definition of the functional unit and the identification of reference flows. In this work, it is hypothesized that system engineering and functional analysis concepts are a promising approach to provide guidelines for system definition, system boundary definition, and …

Archive, Melissa Moody Jul 2012

Archive, Melissa Moody

Theses

Growing up in a home with many objects from the past, I began to take an interest in my family's past, first speaking with my parents and grandparents, and then exploring as many old family photographs as I could. I saw many familiar faces at different points in time, and learned the names of those I had never seen before, realizing they too, were family. I was also struck by the mystery these photographs represented. They were products of another era, an older technology. As such, time had visibly acted upon them. The images themselves had become vague, abstracted by …

The Effect Of The Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies Curriculum On Internalizing Symptoms In Both A Maltreated And Non-Maltreated Sample, Elizabeth Raynor Jul 2012

The Effect Of The Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies Curriculum On Internalizing Symptoms In Both A Maltreated And Non-Maltreated Sample, Elizabeth Raynor

Theses

The present study examines whether the Promoting Alternative THinking Strategies (PATHS) curriculum has an ameliorating effect on internalizing symptoms among 68 low-income and maltreated participants between the ages of 7 and 11. Participants attended a six-week after school program, which implemented the PATHS curriculum. Pre and post measures were obtained and a repeated measures design was used to analyze all participants across three measures of anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. Results indicated that participants did not report clinical significant levels of anxiety, but that those children whose parents had 11 years or more of education reported significantly lower levels of anxiety …

A Covert Channel Over Transport Layer Source Ports, James Gimbi, Daryl Johnson, Peter Lutz, Bo Yuan

Presentations and other scholarship

Covert communication is a rapidly expanding field of research with significant impact on the security theater. These communication methods, or “covert channels”, can be applied in a number of ways, including as a mechanism for an attacker to leak data from a monitored system or network. This paper sets out to contribute to this field by introducing a new covert channel which operates over transport layer protocols. The mechanism is flexible, covert, and has the potential to operate at relatively high bandwidth. In addition, this paper proposes a number of encoding schemes which can be used in conjunction with this …

Forensic Acquisition And Analysis Of Vmware Virtual Hard Disks, Manish Hirwani, Yin Pan, Bill Stackpole, Daryl Johnson

Presentations and other scholarship

With the advancement in virtualization technology, virtual machines (VMs) are becoming a common and integral part of datacenters. As the popularity and the use of VMs increases, incidents involving them are also on the rise. There is substantial research on using VMs and virtual appliances to aid forensic investigation, but research on the appropriate forensics procedures for collecting and analyzing evidence within a VM following is lacking. This paper presents a forensically sound way to acquire and analyze VM hard disks. A forensics tool for analyzing VM snapshots and vmdk files is developed and has been proven to be forensically …

Browser Web Storage Vulnerability Investigation: Html5 Localstorage Object, Dan Bogaard, Daryl Johnson, Robert Parody

Presentations and other scholarship

Along with the introduction of HTML5 a new data storage technique, Web Storage, has been added to browsers. This technique stores larger amounts of data for an extended period of time on a client system. This technology does not (as of this writing) have a fully implemented interface to support end user control. The authors interest is modeling the use of Web Storage to store illicit data. The authors built a web application that would take a file, encrypt it, split it into multiple parts and distribute it to as many clients as possible. At a later time, the system …

Audio Steganography Using High Frequency Noise Introduction, David Wheeler, Daryl Johnson, Bo Yuan, Peter Lutz Jul 2012

Audio Steganography Using High Frequency Noise Introduction, David Wheeler, Daryl Johnson, Bo Yuan, Peter Lutz

Presentations and other scholarship

This paper presents a new method of audio steganography that allows character data to be encoded into audio in a way that is indiscernible to prying third-parties. Unlike typical methods of audio steganography that propose storage by modifying the least significant bits or the phase of the audio data, this approach makes use of frequency ranges that are undetectable to the human ear. The method proposed in this paper provides for a reasonably high-bandwidth and is resistant to common detection and prevention techniques.

Analysis Of Translating Hydrofoil Power Generation Systems (Hydrokites), Kelsey Mcconnaghy Jul 2012

Analysis Of Translating Hydrofoil Power Generation Systems (Hydrokites), Kelsey Mcconnaghy

Theses

The hydrokite is a novel hydro-power system that is based on emerging kite wind-energy systems which are currently being designed for use at high altitudes. The hydrokite system is comprised of a hydrofoil and a support system, and is designed to capture kinetic energy from the flow of a river while reducing negative impacts on the river ecology by minimally interfering with the rivers natural flow (i.e. no dams or river diversions are needed). This work presents some initial results which demonstrate the power performance capabilities of the hydrokite. Two different steady-state models for this system were studied to determine …

Modeling A Solar-Heated Anaerobic Digester For The Developing World Using System Dynamics, Johanna Bentley Jul 2012

Modeling A Solar-Heated Anaerobic Digester For The Developing World Using System Dynamics, Johanna Bentley

Theses

Much of the developing world lacks access to a dependable source of energy. Agricultural societies such as Mozambique and Papua New Guinea could sustain a reliable energy source through the microbacterial decomposition of animal and crop waste. Anaerobic digestion produces methane, which can be used directly for heating, cooking, and lighting. Adding a solar component to the digester provides a catalyst for bacteria activity, accelerating digestion and increasing biogas production. Using methane decreases the amount of energy expended by collecting and preparing firewood, eliminates hazardous health effects linked to inhalation of particles, and provides energy close to where it is …

A Computational Study Of The Effects Of Adherent Leukocytes On Secondary Recruitment, Dhananjay Subramaniam Jul 2012

A Computational Study Of The Effects Of Adherent Leukocytes On Secondary Recruitment, Dhananjay Subramaniam

Theses

Leukocyte rolling is known to be mediated by the selectin family of adhesion molecules and their corresponding ligands and is characterized by the formation and breakage of receptor-ligand bonds. Selectin mediated rolling is associated with the initial stages of the leukocyte adhesion cascade (LAC) in which the cell passes through several stages including chemo-attraction, rolling adhesion, tight adhesion and transmigration before moving out of the circulatory system towards the site of injury. This thesis studies the initial stages of the leukocyte adhesion cascade through a direct numerical simulation based on boundary element techniques. Besides, cell deformation during rolling is believed …

Further Exploration Of Nontypable Haemophilus Influenzae Proteins P5 And P6 As Vaccine Candidates, Anthony Mangan Jul 2012

Further Exploration Of Nontypable Haemophilus Influenzae Proteins P5 And P6 As Vaccine Candidates, Anthony Mangan

Theses

Nontypable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a Gram-negative bacterium which causes otitis media (ear infections), pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis. For many years, the P6 protein has been a leading candidate for a protein vaccine against NTHi, because it is conserved among NTHi strains, is believed to be surface exposed, and contains binding sites for specific antibodies. However, recent structural analysis suggests that P6 may be inserted into the outer membrane in two orientations. Based on the interaction with its homologues in Escherichia coli (E. coli), we proposed that P5, a transmembrane protein in NTHi, plays a role in P6's apparent dual …

Fabrication Of Jet Printed Interdigitated Back Contact Solar Cells, Guadalupe Alvarez-Camacho Jun 2012

Fabrication Of Jet Printed Interdigitated Back Contact Solar Cells, Guadalupe Alvarez-Camacho

Theses

Interdigitated back contact solar cells were fabricated by a process in which patterned photoresist is jet printed directly on the wafer instead of by lithography. The patterned photoresist is used as a barrier for phosphorous and boron implantation as well as for contacts and metal etching. Control solar cells were fabricated by lithography in order to compare the performance of each patterning method. It was found that some of the jet printed photoresist films had non-uniformity issues with respect to the minimal thickness required for implant masking. When these thin zones are not present, structures obtained by jet printed are …

Examining Family Functioning In Pediatric Bipolar Disorder Through Kinetic Family Drawings, Christiana Lajudice Jun 2012

Examining Family Functioning In Pediatric Bipolar Disorder Through Kinetic Family Drawings, Christiana Lajudice

Theses

Pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) is a mental illness that affects the daily lives of children and adults, particularly their family functioning. Past research has found significant differences in maternal-child warmth and disciplinary warmth, maternal and paternal hostility and tension, family cohesion and adaptability, and minor conflicts between children with PBD and comparison groups. Typical methods for assessing family functioning involve objective scales, questionnaires, and interviews. The projective measure, the Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD), has been utilized with other groups including populations of abused and maltreated children, and children with serious medical illnesses, but has yet to be utilized with the …

Passion For Food: Redesigning The Way We Eat, Nicole Chen Jun 2012

Passion For Food: Redesigning The Way We Eat, Nicole Chen

Theses

Where has the passion in food gone? The focus of food has been on the obesity epidemic, as people demand fast, cheap, and easy foods. The symbol of food is no longer seen as a basic need for survival because of the abundance and options of goods. Being unaware of food and its' power to bring and express so many facets of life, has given me the chance to discover areas that could be redesigned. During these past few years learning about food has made me fully understand these processes as a symbiotic relationship. In today's society, what separates people …

Human Reliability Analysis In Healthcare: Application Of The Cognitive Reliability And Error Analysis Method (Cream) In A Hospital Setting, Joey Deeter

Theses

Patient safety is a concern within the healthcare domain as it is estimated that tens of thousands of people die annually from preventable medical errors. For over ten years, traditional Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) techniques (e.g., Root Cause Analysis and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) have been used in hospitals nationwide in an attempt to explain why these errors occur and what can be done to prevent them. Still, patient safety has not improved significantly. Traditional HRA techniques are limited as analysis tools. They do not consider the context in which workers operate. They are also not based on a …

Factors Contributing To The Success Of Commercial Printers, Diana Watkins Jun 2012

Factors Contributing To The Success Of Commercial Printers, Diana Watkins

Theses

Printing had been the uncontested primary media format for over five hundred years--with the commercial printing industry also thriving--until the late 1990s, when abnormal cost patterns and disruptive new media technologies worked together to permanently change the world economy and media landscape. Romano (2010a) estimated that 20% of all print production in the US had disappeared between 1995 and 2010. Many different theories have been posited to commercial printers as to how best to survive, but the overall message has been relatively consistent: print companies cannot rely on economic growth to regain business. Instead, they must adapt to the changing …

Drowsy Cache Partitioning For Reduced Static And Dynamic Energy In The Cache Hierarchy, Brendan Fitzgerald Jun 2012

Drowsy Cache Partitioning For Reduced Static And Dynamic Energy In The Cache Hierarchy, Brendan Fitzgerald

Theses

Power consumption in computing today has lead the industry towards energy efficient computing. As transistor technology shrinks, new techniques have to be developed to keep leakage current, the dominant portion of overall power consumption, to a minimum. Due to the large amount of transistors devoted to the cache hierarchy, the cache provides an excellent avenue to dramatically reduce power usage. The inherent danger with techniques that save power can negatively effect the primary reason for the inclusion of the cache, performance. This thesis work proposes a modification to the cache hierarchy that dramatically saves power with only a slight reduction …

Adaptive Code Division Multiple Access Protocol For Wireless Network-On-Chip Architectures, Vineeth Vijayakumaran Jun 2012

Adaptive Code Division Multiple Access Protocol For Wireless Network-On-Chip Architectures, Vineeth Vijayakumaran

Theses

Massive levels of integration following Moore's Law ushered in a paradigm shift in the way on-chip interconnections were designed. With higher and higher number of cores on the same die traditional bus based interconnections are no longer a scalable communication infrastructure. On-chip networks were proposed enabled a scalable plug-and-play mechanism for interconnecting hundreds of cores on the same chip. Wired interconnects between the cores in a traditional Network-on-Chip (NoC) system, becomes a bottleneck with increase in the number of cores thereby increasing the latency and energy to transmit signals over them. Hence, there has been many alternative emerging interconnect technologies …

Ionic Polymer Metal Composites As Tactile Sensors, Chris Mieney Jun 2012

Ionic Polymer Metal Composites As Tactile Sensors, Chris Mieney

Theses

The field of electroactive polymers (EAPs) is rapidly growing. These materials are being scouted for use as linear actuators, specifically in the areas of artificial muscle design, and also for use as biomimetic sensors. IPMCs, or ionic polymer metal composites, are a form of EAP that are being proposed for application in both of these fields. IPMCs are composed of a solvated ionic EAP sandwiched between two metal electrodes. In the literature, there are a wealth of conceptual designs and data related to the use of IPMCs as actuators. However, sufficient data and characterization related to their use as sensors …

A Coarse Imaging Sensor For Detecting Embedded Signals In Infrared Light, Mark Bailly Jun 2012

A Coarse Imaging Sensor For Detecting Embedded Signals In Infrared Light, Mark Bailly

Theses

Machine vision technology has become prevalent in touch technology, however, it is still limited by background noise. To reduce the background noise present in the images of interest it is important to consider the imaging device and the signal source. The architecture, size, sampling scheme, programming, and technology of the imaging device must be considered as well as the response characteristics of the signal source. Several pixel architectures are explained and implemented with discrete components. Their performance was measured through their ability to track a modulated signal source. Potentially, an imaging sensor comprised of a system designed to modulate the …

Spectral Printing Of Paintings Using A Seven-Color Digital Press, Simon Muehlemann May 2012

Spectral Printing Of Paintings Using A Seven-Color Digital Press, Simon Muehlemann

Theses

The human visual system is trichromatic and therefore reduces higher dimensional spectral data to three dimensions. Two stimuli with different spectral power curve shapes can result in the same cone response and therefore match each other. Color reproduction systems take advantage of this effect and match color by creating the same cone response as the original but with different colorants. ICC color management transforms all colors into a three-dimensional reference color space, which is independent from any input or output devices. This concept works well for a single defined observer and illumination conditions, but in practice, it is not possible …
