Spatial Relationship, Jeong Ju Lee Oct 2012

Spatial Relationship, Jeong Ju Lee

Theses

My sculptural furniture and jewelry works derive from my interest in the human body and its spatial relationship to surroundings. Inspired by the organic forms from nature with human elements, the furniture presents the interaction between the work and the viewers as it is conceived as both functional and sculptural. The jewelry makes a statement on the body as a wearable sculpture, focusing on the organization of space as well as considering the movement on the human body.

An Approach To Detecting Crowd Anomalies For Entrance And Checkpoint Security, Holly Zelnio Oct 2012

An Approach To Detecting Crowd Anomalies For Entrance And Checkpoint Security, Holly Zelnio

Theses

This thesis develops an approach for detecting behavioral anomalies using tracks of pedestrians, including specified threat tracks. The application area is installation security with focus on monitoring the entrances of these installations. The approach specifically allows operator interaction to specify threats and to interactively adjust the system parameters depending on the context of the situation. This research has discovered physically meaningful features that are developed and organized in a manner so that features can be systematically added or deleted depending on the situation and operator preference. The features can be used with standard classifiers such as the one class support …

Electric Vehicle Charging And Routing Management Via Multi-Infrastructure Data Fusion, Christopher Decker Oct 2012

Electric Vehicle Charging And Routing Management Via Multi-Infrastructure Data Fusion, Christopher Decker

Theses

The introduction of Electric Vehicles (EVs) has placed a strain on the aged and already overworked electrical grid. With each EV requiring the same amount of power as 3 to 140 single family homes, depending on how fast the charge occurs, measures need to be taken in order to protect the electrical grid from serious damage. The electric grid renovations proposed by the U.S. department of energy, commonly referred to as the smart grid, could help accommodate an even greater EV penetration. The introduction of the smart grid and other cutting-edge technologies create the potential for applications which provide new …

Verifying The Conformance Of Cmy Offset Inks To Iso 2846 By Means Of A Graduated Gage, Enqi Zhang Oct 2012

Verifying The Conformance Of Cmy Offset Inks To Iso 2846 By Means Of A Graduated Gage, Enqi Zhang

Theses

The original intent of this research was to verify that a new method - called the Little Joe method in this report - could be used to verify that CMY offset inks conform to ISO 2846. This method would use less time to generate multiple ink film thicknesses (IFTs) than the traditionally used ISO 2834 method. With a graduated gage, a Little Joe proofer can be used to produce multiple IFTs on a single sample. However, the absolute thickness values for those IFTs are unknown. Therefore, to calibrate these unknown IFTs, a calibration curve that relates IFT and optical density …

Think Aloud: Can Eye Tracking Add Value In Detecting Usability Problems?, Alekhya Paruchuri Oct 2012

Think Aloud: Can Eye Tracking Add Value In Detecting Usability Problems?, Alekhya Paruchuri

Theses

The protocols of Think Aloud and Eye Tracking, in their own unique way have proven to be great methods to understand users' thought processes, and their mental models when interacting with interfaces. However the effectiveness of the combination of the two protocols in discovering usability problems has not been explored. This study aimed to discover if the addition of Eye Tracking data (fixations and scan movements) to the traditional protocol of Think Aloud can uncover more usability problems. Web users were split into three groups: Eye Tracking Only (ET), Think Aloud Only (TA), and Eye Tracking and Think Aloud Only …

Mobile To Cloud Co-Processing Of Asl Finger Spelling To Text Conversion, Philip Hays Oct 2012

Mobile To Cloud Co-Processing Of Asl Finger Spelling To Text Conversion, Philip Hays

Theses

Computer recognition of American Sign Language (ASL) is a computationally intensive task. Although it has generally been performed using powerful lab workstations, this research investigates transcription of static ASL signs using an application on a consumer-level mobile device. The application provides real-time sign to text translation by processing a live video stream to detect the ASL alphabet as well as custom signs to perform tasks on the device. In this work several avenues for classification and processing were ex-plored to evaluate performance for mobile ASL transcription. The cho-sen classification algorithm uses locality preserving projections (LPP) with trained support vector machines …

Procedural Generation Of Road Networks For Large Virtual Environments, Craig Martek Oct 2012

Procedural Generation Of Road Networks For Large Virtual Environments, Craig Martek

Theses

Much work has been done in recent years involving the generation of virtual landscapes, namely for applications in video games and movies. Some recent video games feature worlds upwards of 400 mi2, and they continue to expand. Manual design of these landscapes can be extremely time consuming. However, recent approaches have shown that reasonable scenes could potentially be generated procedurally with little to no input from a human designer. Many of the individual pieces necessary for generating a large, complex terrain populated with cities have been investigated, but efforts to piece them together have been minimal so far. A system …

Design Of A Terrain Detection System For Foot Drop, Christopher Sullivan Oct 2012

Design Of A Terrain Detection System For Foot Drop, Christopher Sullivan

Theses

The ankle foot orthotic (AFO) has been around for centuries. They were created to augment functionality of an ankle damaged due to injury or disease. A common reason a patient might be prescribed an AFO is a condition called foot drop. Foot drop can be caused by many conditions, but the most common reason is a stroke. Foot drop can be characterized by the inability to raise and/or lower a patient's foot. This incapacitation of the patient's foot leads to unnatural gaits and joint fatigue, as well as increasing the patient's likelihood of tripping and becoming seriously injured. Hard plastic …

Two And Three Dimensional Segmentation Of Multimodal Imagery, Sreenath Rao Vantaram Oct 2012

Two And Three Dimensional Segmentation Of Multimodal Imagery, Sreenath Rao Vantaram

Theses

The role of segmentation in the realms of image understanding/analysis, computer vision, pattern recognition, remote sensing and medical imaging in recent years has been significantly augmented due to accelerated scientific advances made in the acquisition of image data. This low-level analysis protocol is critical to numerous applications, with the primary goal of expediting and improving the effectiveness of subsequent high-level operations by providing a condensed and pertinent representation of image information. In this research, we propose a novel unsupervised segmentation framework for facilitating meaningful segregation of 2-D/3-D image data across multiple modalities (color, remote-sensing and biomedical imaging) into non-overlapping partitions …

Cost Benefit Analysis Of The Federal Tax Credit For Purchasing An Electric Vehicle, William Fuqua Oct 2012

Cost Benefit Analysis Of The Federal Tax Credit For Purchasing An Electric Vehicle, William Fuqua

Theses

This paper will present the results of a cost-benefit analysis performed to determine the public benefits of the $7500 federal tax credit for purchasing an electric vehicle. A cost benefit ratio including air pollution, carbon dioxide emissions, and oil dependence as components was created and applied to every county in the continental United States. The results suggest that the current tax credit is too high since it does not create $7500 worth of public benefits using the benefits included in the analysis. Benefits vary regionally due to sources of electricity generation and existing air pollution levels with counties in the …

Feathers From A Post Extraction, Bri Kinard Sep 2012

Feathers From A Post Extraction, Bri Kinard

Theses

I proposed to create a cohesive body of sculptural work that would evolve through the act of making and the trials of experimentation. I invited every opportunity for my work to transform and take on a new direction. I had complete devotion to the work and material of clay. I considered my drive for discovery to be a purpose which spawned emotion giving me a reason to continue my pursuit of art. I approached the making of my work with a chronic compulsion for production. I make art because I have to. The choice to be an artist was never …

Cross-Enterprise Access Control Security For Electronic Health Records: Technical, Practical And Legislation Impact, Mark Rodzinka

Theses

In this thesis we investigate the relationship of security, privacy, legislation, computational power in relation to Cross-Enterprise User Assertions (XUA), which allows us to develop the recommendations for the appropriate, architecture, functionality, cryptographic algorithms, and key lengths. The evolution of health records from paper to electronic media promises to be an important part of improving the quality of health care. The diversity of organizations, systems, geography, laws and regulations create a significant challenge for ensuring the privacy of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), while maintaining availability. XUA is a technology that attempts to address the problem of sharing EHRs across enterprise boundaries. …

Investigation Of Bolometric And Resistive Properties Of Nickel Oxide, Shaurya Kumar Sep 2012

Investigation Of Bolometric And Resistive Properties Of Nickel Oxide, Shaurya Kumar

Theses

This work investigates the properties of nickel oxide for use in microbolometric and resistive memory applications. For the uncooled infrared radiation detector industry, the current standard sensor materials are either very expensive, but very sensitive (vanadium oxide), or the other extreme of low cost, and low quality (amorphous silicon). Thus, a need arises for a medium-grade, medium-cost microbolometer sensitive material. The physical scaling limits of conventional charge-based non-volatile memory has progressed the semiconductor industry into searching for a new type of non-volatile memory device. Resistive random access memory (ReRAM) shows promise to fill this void, and nickel oxide presents itself …

Analysis And Application Of A Free Energy Model For Lens Protein Mixtures, Michael Bell Sep 2012

Analysis And Application Of A Free Energy Model For Lens Protein Mixtures, Michael Bell

Theses

Cataract, the leading cause of blindness worldwide, has motivated a variety of investigations into the behavior of concentrated mixtures of eye lens proteins. While there has been success in modeling single protein solutions, a convenient model for mixtures is needed. We apply an analytically solvable sticky-hard sphere model to aqueous mixtures of alpha and gamma crystallin, two of the predominant proteins found in the mammalian eye lens. Developed by Baxter and Barboy, this model incorporates some of the fundamental characteristics of realistic mixtures, namely, variation in size and intermolecular attraction strength among each component. We show that light scattering intensities …
