A Multi-Temporal Fusion-Based Approach For Land Cover Mapping In Support Of Nuclear Incident Response, Shagan Sah Jan 2013

A Multi-Temporal Fusion-Based Approach For Land Cover Mapping In Support Of Nuclear Incident Response, Shagan Sah

Theses

An increasingly important application of remote sensing is to provide decision support during emergency response and disaster management efforts. Land cover maps constitute one such useful application product during disaster events; if generated rapidly after any disaster, such map products can contribute to the efficacy of the response effort. In light of recent nuclear incidents, e.g., after the earthquake/tsunami in Japan (2011), our research focuses on constructing rapid and accurate land cover maps of the impacted area in case of an accidental nuclear release. The methodology involves integration of results from two different approaches, namely coarse spatial resolution multi-temporal and …

Implementing A Dynamic Scaling Of Web Applications In A Virtualized Cloud Computing Environment, Mohammed Aljebreen Jan 2013

Implementing A Dynamic Scaling Of Web Applications In A Virtualized Cloud Computing Environment, Mohammed Aljebreen

Theses

Cloud computing is becoming more essential day by day. The allure of the cloud is the significant value and benefits that people gain from it, such as reduced costs, increased storage, flexibility, and more mobility. Flexibility is one of the major benefits that cloud computing can provide in terms of scaling up and down the infrastructure of a network. Once traffic has increased on one server within the network, a load balancer instance will route incoming requests to a healthy instance, which is less busy and less burdened. When the full complement of instances cannot handle any more requests, past …

Modern Multivariate Methods For Accurate Dialect Classification, Ernest Fokoue, Zichen Ma Jan 2013

Modern Multivariate Methods For Accurate Dialect Classification, Ernest Fokoue, Zichen Ma

Articles

We perform discriminant analysis together with principal component analysis on dialect and accent recognition. Since the data matrix exhibits high dimension low sample size feature, we calculate the principal components and the score matrix based on the dual space. Given the transformed score matrix, linear discriminant model does not fit the data well, while quadratic discriminant model, the superior model comparing to LDA, may fail sometimes when large number of principal components are required. Using the Gaussian radial basis function kernel, we calculate the kernel matrix and perform LDA directly on it. Comparing the LDA-PCA method, the in-sample prediction error …

Speaker Gender Recognition Via Mfccs And Svms, Ernest Fokoue, Zichen Ma Jan 2013

Speaker Gender Recognition Via Mfccs And Svms, Ernest Fokoue, Zichen Ma

Articles

An algorithm involving MFCCs and SVMs is provided to perform speaker gender recognition. For each signal, the mean vector of MFCCs matrix is used as an input vector in the SVM algorithm. A sample of 246 signals, containing 124 female voice and 122 male voice, is analyzed based on this algorithm. With only the first 13 MFCCs, the average prediction error is as low as 7% in a cross-validation of size 500. It is shown that this error drops down below 1% as the number of MFCCs increases to 27. Also, the RBF kernel is compared with polynomial kernel and …

On The Predictive Analytics Of The Probit And Logit Link Functions, Necla Gunduz, Ernest Fokoue Jan 2013

On The Predictive Analytics Of The Probit And Logit Link Functions, Necla Gunduz, Ernest Fokoue

Articles

Researchers and practitioners have long held that the probit and logit link functions generally yield the same performance in binary classification. Despite this widespread recognition of the strong similarities between these two link functions, very few (if any) researchers have dedicated time to carry out a formal study aimed at establishing and characterizing firmly all the aspects of the similarities and differences. This paper proposes a definition of both structural and predictive equivalence link functions-based binary regression models, and provides both a theoretical and computational justification of the long held claim that probit and logit are indeed very similar. From …

A Type- And Control-Flow Analysis For System F: Technical Report, Matthew Fluet Jan 2013

A Type- And Control-Flow Analysis For System F: Technical Report, Matthew Fluet

Articles

We present a monovariant flow analysis for System F (with recursion). The flow analysis yields both control-flow information, approximating the λ- and Λ-expressions that may be bound to variables, and type-flow information, approximating the type expressions that may instantiate type variables. Moreover, the two flows are mutually beneficial: the control flow determines which Λ-expressions may be applied to which type expressions (and, hence, which type expressions may instantiate which type variables), while the type flow filters the λ- and Λ-expressions that may be bound to variables (by rejecting expressions with static types that are incompatible with the static type of …

Implementation, Integration, And Optimization Of A Fuzzy Foreground Segmentation System, Ryan M. Bowen Jan 2013

Implementation, Integration, And Optimization Of A Fuzzy Foreground Segmentation System, Ryan M. Bowen

Theses

Foreground segmentation is often an important preliminary step for various video processing systems. By improving the accuracy of the foreground segmentation process, the overall performance of a video processing system has the potential for improvement. This work introduces a Fuzzy Foreground Segmentation System (FFSS) that uses Mamdani-type Fuzzy Inference Systems (FIS) to control pixel-level accumulated statistics. The error of the FFSS is quantified by comparing its output with hand-segmented ground-truth images from a set of image sequences that specifically model canonical problems of foreground segmentation. Optimization of the FFSS parameters is achieved using a Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA). Additionally, multiple …

Perception Of Poverty: Promoting Social Responsibility Through Multi-Sensory Integration, Daniel Skrok Jan 2013

Perception Of Poverty: Promoting Social Responsibility Through Multi-Sensory Integration, Daniel Skrok

Theses

Traditional graphic design and marketing rely heavily on visual forms of communication. With advertisements all around us, the constant visual bombardment has led to an over stimulated consumer, creating a challenge for designers to invent alternative ways to capture the audience's attention. Multi-sensory integration overcomes this challenge in my opinion, by integrating more than the sense of sight and is more effective and memorable, because it conveys the core message through multiple senses rather than one. The integration of additional senses within the field, particularly olfactory in my opinion, helps to enhance the overall communication and facilitate a more potent …

Under A Pale Grey Sky: An Interactive Timeline Of Iroquoian Warfare And Its Impact On The Acceleration Of American Colonization, Thomas Weaver Jan 2013

Under A Pale Grey Sky: An Interactive Timeline Of Iroquoian Warfare And Its Impact On The Acceleration Of American Colonization, Thomas Weaver

Theses

Early American settlers thought the Iroquois to be a violent, forceful and barbaric amalgamation of Native American Nations. Their organization of warfare, community, and politics allowed them to remain one of the most powerful nations for many years. Conflict with other tribes was a normal part of life for the Iroquois and the surrounding nations. However, as the American settlers began moving towards the frontier, Iroquois conflicts with the Algonquian begin to rise in frequency. This led to weakening of the Iroquois population and allowed the American settlers to usurp land from the Six Nations without considerable opposition.

Theses

The objective of this work is to identify inconsistencies in the tax legislation in Kosovo and recommend solutions towards more comprehensive and user friendly laws for taxpayers, tax professionals and tax administrators. A crucial element of the tax legislation is its consistency. Tax laws need to be in accordance with each other as they are the building blocks of the same system – the tax system. Unfortunately, analysis on the tax laws in Kosovo resulted in identification of a number of inconsistencies that affect negatively the comprehensiveness, simplicity and the functionality of the laws. Moreover, interviews conducted with different stakeholders …

Circuit Solutions To Compensate For Device Degradation In Analog Design In Scaled Technologies, Mark Pude Jan 2013

Circuit Solutions To Compensate For Device Degradation In Analog Design In Scaled Technologies, Mark Pude

Theses

The continued aggressive scaling of semiconductor devices has had detrimental effects on the performance of those devices as used in analog circuitry. Specifically, the maximum intrinsic gain (MIG) of the devices continues to degrade as the device channel lengths are reduced below 100 nm and beyond. MIG is shown to degrade from 21.6 dB in a 180 nm technology to 12.2 dB in a 65 nm technology despite the application of traditional design techniques including device size scaling and bias voltage increases. This reduction in MIG along with other process scaling effects significantly complicates the design of linear amplifiers in …

Investigation On Solid-Phase Crystallization Techniques For Low Temperature Polysilicon Thin-Film Transistors, Qinglong Li Jan 2013

Investigation On Solid-Phase Crystallization Techniques For Low Temperature Polysilicon Thin-Film Transistors, Qinglong Li

Theses

Low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) has emerged as a dominant technology for high performance thin-film transistors (TFTs) used in mobile liquid crystal display (LCD) and organic light emitting diode (OLED) display products. As users demand higher quality in flat panel displays with a larger viewing area and finer resolution, the improvement in carrier mobility of LTPS compared to that of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) makes it an excellent candidate as a channel material for TFT. Advantages include improvements in switching speed and the ability to incorporate peripheral scan and data driver circuitry onto a low cost display substrate. Solid-phase crystallization (SPC) is …

An Investigation Of Soft Proof To Print Agreement Under Bright Surround, Vickrant J. Zunjarrao Jan 2013

An Investigation Of Soft Proof To Print Agreement Under Bright Surround, Vickrant J. Zunjarrao

Theses

Color quality is a vital concern in the printing industry. The ability of an LCD monitor to accurately and consistently predict the color of a printed work is often in doubt. According to Chung (2005), color reproduction technology is different for soft proofing and hard proofing which could lead a layman to believe that the two technologies may not produce the same result. Nevertheless, it is still possible for both reproduction technologies to achieve a metameric match which gives the same perceived color sensation between display and print.

ISO/CD 14681 provides guidelines for creating the conditions required to perform soft …

Towards The Control Of Electrophotographic-Based 3-Dimensional Printing: Image-Based Sensing And Modeling Of Surface Defects, Alvaro J. Rojas Arciniegas

Theses

Electro-Photography (EP) has been used for decades for fast, cheap, and reliable printing in offices and homes around the world. It has been shown that extending the use of EP for 3D printing is feasible; multiple layered prints are already commercially available (color laser printers) but only for a very limited number of layers. Many of the advantages of laser printing make EP 3D printing desirable including: speed, reliability, selective coloring, ability to print a thermoplastic, possibilities for multi-material printing, ability to print materials not amenable to liquid ink formulations. However, many challenges remain before EP-based 3D printing can be …
