This Is Bouyon: An Exploration Of Dominica’S Own Genre Of Music, Garford Alexander May 2014

This Is Bouyon: An Exploration Of Dominica’S Own Genre Of Music, Garford Alexander

Theses

Bouyon music is a mixture of rhythms, melodies, and musical styles from

genres, such as Soca, Zouk, and traditional genres native to Dominica, a

small island nation located in the Caribbean Sea. The music is one of the

most popular musical genres in Dominica, and one of the Caribbean's

best-kept secrets. As Dominica is one of the lesser-known islands, this

genre of music is unknown to much of the world outside of the West Indies.

My project aims to document the history, and create awareness for Bouyon

music. Using firsthand interviews with the creators of the genre, footage of

performances, …

To Build A Home, Gina Zetta May 2014

To Build A Home, Gina Zetta

Theses

It is in our nature as humans to want for a home, a point of origin to start from and safe place to return at journey's end. When that place is lost, we risk becoming lost too. This body of work is an exploration of how the spaces we occupy shape us. It's location is focused on the American landscape in an attempt to explore the ideals that have developed within the psyche of the American culture, and what happens to those dreams when expectations do not mirror reality. I am particularly interested in socially and geographically vulnerable locations. Places …

Clay allows me to tell the story of my memories that are left behind from diverse and unpredictable relationships between myself and others. In my work there is a direct relationship between the forms I construct and the inspirations behind the work. For example, I clearly remember when my father was in hospital toward his final stages of illness. I had always remembered him as being physically, a very …

Anatomically Realistic Structural Modeling Of The Cardiac Purkinje Network: A Basis For Studying Contributions Of The Conduction System To Ventricular Arrhythmias, Benjamin Liu May 2014

Anatomically Realistic Structural Modeling Of The Cardiac Purkinje Network: A Basis For Studying Contributions Of The Conduction System To Ventricular Arrhythmias, Benjamin Liu

Theses

A cardiac arrhythmia is a potentially-lethal event in which the normally orderly electrical activity in the heart is disrupted -- it becomes disorganized and compromises effective contraction. To better understand arrhythmia dynamics to develop potential therapies and treatments, experimental, computational, and mathematical tools are required. Simulations of cardiac tissue provide valuable insight into the dynamics of life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, and though much work has been done in this area, the role of the Purkinje network during ventricular arrhythmias has largely been ignored. The function of the Purkinje network is crucial to normal heart rhythm, so its inclusion into cardiac structural …

A Conjoint Analysis Of The Value Of Book Covers In E-Book Buying Decisions, Holly Rollins May 2014

A Conjoint Analysis Of The Value Of Book Covers In E-Book Buying Decisions, Holly Rollins

Theses

The objective of this Thesis was to determine the relative value of the cover design, price, and customer rating (e-book attributes) to consumers of science fiction or fantasy e-books. The motivation for this research was that the way we shop for digital books is different from the way we shop for print books. This led authorities to take positions as different as "[Book covers are] dead because the way we touch digital books is different than the way we touch physical books," (Mod, 2012), and "[Typographic covers] are one way to go," (Bridle, 2010).

A conjoint analysis was designed to …

Warp & Weft, Maggie Pinke May 2014

Warp & Weft, Maggie Pinke

Theses

There are two distinct directional strands used in weaving, the warp and the weft. Weaving functions as a rich metaphor for language and story telling, stretching across time and cultures. Like both photography and spoken language, it contains an assumption of memory and the ephemeral. Cloth wears thin with use, while images on paper, though temporarily captured, fade with time, and voices disappear once spoken. Building a body of work that examines created and recovered experience through text and image has allowed me to take the necessary steps backward and discover links between events and places previously unexplored.

How To Teach A Complex Discipline In A Changing Learning Environment: The Example Of Sustainability, Sándor Kerekes, Konrad Wetzker

Journal of Environmental Sustainability

In the “electronic age” our teaching profession is faced with new challenges. Normally, educators tend to spend a significant amount of time updating the content of what they teach. They spend less time changing their methods of teaching. Today, this no longer works. A lot of content is delivered through Google and similar partners and what is now critical is that we make the necessary changes in our teaching methods to reflect this and to have some impact on our audiences. Based on more than forty years of teaching experience we feel qualified to underline the importance of the form …
