Instruments Of Generation, Bradley Dunn

Theses

This Thesis is a study into possible outcomes on products from recent trends in business culture, virtual and physical tools, and marketing and sales.

We will first look at our changing economic and political systems. The situations provide insight into the way goods are produced, by whom they are produced, and the general mood of consumers insights. From there we will consider how changing tools and strategies may lead to similar changes in how we design. And finally we will consider research in customer choice in a world of abundance.

My own explorations into different product sets will attempt to …

Hopeless Optimism, Shane Caryl

Theses

Being influenced by the toy art scene that exploded in Japan, my work is an insight to the American adult through the playful and satirical antics of my creations. Through making a series of sculptures I am interested in the visual language that is needed to create an implied narrative, which is required for the metaphor to come across. These satirical situations I have created are influenced by Anime, Comic Books, Merry Melodies Cartoons and Japanese Manga and the way they are made is inspired by the works found in the Little Boy exhibition as well as the Beautiful Losers …

An Experimental Study On Pool Boiling Performance Enhancement And Effect Of Aging, Aniket M. Rishi Jul 2017

An Experimental Study On Pool Boiling Performance Enhancement And Effect Of Aging, Aniket M. Rishi

Theses

The miniaturization of electronic devices requires advanced thermal management techniques. The two-phase heat transfer process offers more effective and sustainable approach compared to the presently used single-phase cooling techniques. The boiling heat transfer is a two-phase cooling technique, that dissipates a high heat flux while maintaining the low surface temperature thereby, offering an efficient heat transfer mechanism compared to the single-phase process. Furthermore, the surface enhancement techniques such as micro/nano porous coatings help to maintain the low surface temperature thus improving the overall heat transfer performance. Electrodeposition is a simple technique that enhances this performance by creating the porous structure …

Cell Dynamics In Three-Dimensional (3d) Culture Environments, Rong Fan Jul 2017

Cell Dynamics In Three-Dimensional (3d) Culture Environments, Rong Fan

Theses

A three-dimensional (3D) cell culture system provides an effective platform to study cell dynamics in in vivo-mimicking conditions and thus plays an important role in understanding cell biology, organ function, and disease model. This dissertation investigates cell dynamics in a variety of 3D environments including solid and liquid matrix. We study cell dynamics in 3D hydrogel microparticles and show that cells exhibit significant differences with that from 2D monolayer culture, including cell cycle, survival, morphology and the sensitivity to inflammation. We further develop a 3D printed cell-laden hybrid hydrogel construct to investigate colon cancer cell dynamics in physiologically relevant bowel …

Degradation Of Cyclic Ethers By Microorganisms Isolated From Contaminated Groundwater, Rowan Thompson Jul 2017

Degradation Of Cyclic Ethers By Microorganisms Isolated From Contaminated Groundwater, Rowan Thompson

Theses

Groundwater contamination is an extremely important topic in environmental science. Ex-situ removal of contaminants is costly and largely ineffective on contaminants that have high vapor pressures and readily mix with water. Bioremediation or bio-augmentation are attractive alternative ways to remediate a site, as they may require less work and be more cost-effective.

Groundwater samples from a superfund site contaminated with chlorinated compounds and other volatile organic compounds. Samples were enriched to select for organisms capable of degrading cyclic ethers, specifically tetrahydrofuran and 1,4-dioxane. The isolates were tested for their degradation capacity and to determine if they were impacted by the …

Novel Approaches To The Spectral And Colorimetric Color Reproduction, Morteza Maali Amiri Jul 2017

Novel Approaches To The Spectral And Colorimetric Color Reproduction, Morteza Maali Amiri

Theses

All the different approaches taken for spectral data acquisition can be narrowed down to two main methods; the first one is using spectrophotometer, spectroradiometer, hyper- and multi- spectral camera through which the spectra can be most probably attained with a high level of accuracy in a direct manner. Nonetheless, the price at which the spectra are acquired is very high. However, there is also a second approached in which the spectra are estimated from the colorimetric information. The second approach, even though it is very cost efficient, is of limited level of accuracy, which could be due to the methods …

The Emotional Impact Of Audio - Visual Stimuli, Titus Pallithottathu Thomas Jul 2017

The Emotional Impact Of Audio - Visual Stimuli, Titus Pallithottathu Thomas

Theses

Induced affect is the emotional effect of an object on an individual. It can be quantified through two metrics: valence and arousal. Valance quantifies how positive or negative something is, while arousal quantifies the intensity from calm to exciting. These metrics enable researchers to study how people opine on various topics. Affective content analysis of visual media is a challenging problem due to differences in perceived reactions. Industry standard machine learning classifiers such as Support Vector Machines can be used to help determine user affect. The best affect-annotated video datasets are often analyzed by feeding large amounts of visual and …

An Evaluation Of The Effect Of Instrument Geometry On Color Management For Printed Textiles, Bruce Leigh Myers Jun 2017

An Evaluation Of The Effect Of Instrument Geometry On Color Management For Printed Textiles, Bruce Leigh Myers

Presentations and other scholarship

The present study analyzes spectrophotometers with two different optical geometries, namely unidirectional 45° instruments and spherical 8°instruments, for building ICC profiles of inkjet-printed textiles. Unidirectional 45° instruments are utilized extensively in the graphic arts, while spherical 8° instruments are more commonly used in the textile industry. One limitation to using spherical 8° instruments for ICC profiling is that profiles built of printing conditions typically require readings of hundreds of patches, and there is only one known instrument configuration that can automate this process, while choices abound for automated instrumentation with unidirectional 45° for ICC profiling. Using a ColorScout A+, a …

Presentations and other scholarship

Student preconceptions play an important role in education. In the constructivist theory, the students’ cognitive process is understood as building new knowledge using existing ideas as a starting point. Students’ preconceptions and intuitions are often false, naïve or incomplete. When aware of this fact, instructors can find these misconceptions early in a course, and devise an educational methodology to address them19,2. We aim to identify student preconceptions related to networking and telecommunications engineering technology with the objective of increasing the effectiveness of our teaching methodologies. We hypothesize that to effectively address misconceptions, student culture must be taken into account. Finally, …

Pipelined Implementation Of A Fixed-Point Square Root Core Using Non-Restoring And Restoring Algorithm, Vyoma Sharma Jun 2017

Pipelined Implementation Of A Fixed-Point Square Root Core Using Non-Restoring And Restoring Algorithm, Vyoma Sharma

Theses

Arithmetic Square Root is one of the most complex but nevertheless widely used operations in modern computing. A primary reason for the complexity is the irrational nature of the square root for non-perfect numbers and the iterative behavior required for square root computation. A typical RISC implementation of Square Root Computation can take anywhere from 200 - 300 cycles. If significant usage is encountered, this could result in an impact in run-time cost which would justify a direct hardware implementation that achieves the same result in as little as 20 clock cycles. Additionally, the implementation is pipelined to achieve even …

Redefining Sustainable Potential In Product Design, Alex Lobos May 2017

Redefining Sustainable Potential In Product Design, Alex Lobos

Presentations and other scholarship

Sustainability in product design is not determined only at the creation of an object; it can be acquired over time, just like a product that was designed with sustainability in mind is misused and underappreciated. Designers need to redefine how products and systems are created, and users need to reevaluate their relationship with them by engaging in sustainable behaviors at multiple points of their lifecycle. This paper introduces a categorization of products based on their ability to solve user’s needs and to minimize environmental impact across the lifecycle. Categories range from sub and ephemeral products, which don’t even serve relevant …

High-Dimensional Linear And Functional Analysis Of Multivariate Grapevine Data, Uday Kant Jha May 2017

High-Dimensional Linear And Functional Analysis Of Multivariate Grapevine Data, Uday Kant Jha

Theses

Variable selection plays a major role in multivariate high-dimensional statistical modeling. Hence, we need to select a consistent model, which avoids overfitting in prediction, enhances model interpretability and identifies relevant variables. We explore various continuous, nearly unbiased, sparse and accurate technique of linear model using coefficients paths like penalized maximum likelihood and nonconvex penalties, and iterative Sure Independence Screening (SIS). The convex penalized (pseudo-) likelihood approach based on the elastic net uses a mixture of the ℓ1 (Lasso) and ℓ2 (ridge regression) simultaneously achieve automatic variable selection, continuous shrinkage, and selection of the groups of correlated variables. Variable selection using …

Identification Of Differential Expression Of P53 Associated Rnas At 3 Different Treatment Timepoints, And Association With Chip-Seq Identified P53 Genes., Julia Freewoman May 2017

Identification Of Differential Expression Of P53 Associated Rnas At 3 Different Treatment Timepoints, And Association With Chip-Seq Identified P53 Genes., Julia Freewoman

Theses

Called “the guardian of the genome,” p53 is one of the most studied proteins associated with cancer. After activation, p53 induces its target genes with different kinetics, i.e., early induction or delayed induction. However, this difference in kinetics of gene induction has not been examined genome-wide. This study uses RNA-seq time course data (0-hour, 6-hour, 12-hour and 24-hour) via drug induction with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and compares that data to previously published ChIP-seq data. We found that, while there is an induction of a number of genes at 6 hours, there appears to be a delayed phase of induction occurring at …

Adding Security To Control Area Network Of Vehicles By Using Sha-3, Aidin Ameri May 2017

Adding Security To Control Area Network Of Vehicles By Using Sha-3, Aidin Ameri

Theses

The lack of security in the vehicles on the road is real and should be taken seriously. Since the lifespan of vehicles has average of eleven years, this means if we start to implement new changes to vehicles today, it would takes eleven years to make sure most vehicles on the road support our implementation. This is important as the number of lines of codes in vehicles are ever increasing and becoming more autonomous with the ability for vehicles to drive themselves. But there is no security implemented in their low level systems such as the Control Area Network which …
