Concentration And Conductivity Of Fountain Solutions: A Study Of The Relationship Between Concentration Of Materials/Electrochemical Conductivity Of Fountain Solutions And Offset Lithographic Plate Performance, Silva Ada Opusunju Sep 1981

Concentration And Conductivity Of Fountain Solutions: A Study Of The Relationship Between Concentration Of Materials/Electrochemical Conductivity Of Fountain Solutions And Offset Lithographic Plate Performance, Silva Ada Opusunju

Theses

The transfer of the image to the substrate in lithographic printing relies very much on the characteristics of the fountain solution. The quality or desensitization potential of the solution has always been determined by measurements of pH ; and by the more "recently" proposed method of electrochemical conductivity. The purpose of this study was to determine which of these techniques most suitably measured the efficiency of the solution. Since the fountain solutions were always changing during the press run, the response of pH and conductivity to changes in concentration were used as criteria for measuring their suitability. The effect on …

A Study Of The Conventional Method Of Producing Spreads And Chokes And The New Technology By Using Orbital Motion (Micro-Modifier), Sze-Men Lui Sep 1981

A Study Of The Conventional Method Of Producing Spreads And Chokes And The New Technology By Using Orbital Motion (Micro-Modifier), Sze-Men Lui

Theses

A photographic process that produces thicker or thinner images for color trapping in order to have easier registration in color printing is called spreads or chokes. A study was made of the conventional (contacting) method of producing spreads and chokes and the new technology by using orbital motion (Micro-modifier) with respect to the results on the films by measuring the printing sharpness, resolution, dot gain, base density, contrast, accuracy and uniformity of spreads and chokes. A cost study for both methods was also made. A series of experiments were designed and done in order to compare the two methods. The …

Coherent Optical Linewidth Measurement Of Thick Films On Integrated Circuit Wafers, Andrew Pomerene Jul 1981

Coherent Optical Linewidth Measurement Of Thick Films On Integrated Circuit Wafers, Andrew Pomerene

Theses

A linewidth measurement system has been developed which incorporates a coherent laser microspot with a piezo flexure-pivot translational stage. A line is scanned beneath the microspot and reflected energy collected with an on axis geometry normal to the wafer. Position versus reflectance data are presented for lines patterned in thick and thin oxide films on I.e. wafers.

Visual Modulation Transfer Function As A Predictor Of Acuity, Thomas A. Sebring Jun 1981

Visual Modulation Transfer Function As A Predictor Of Acuity, Thomas A. Sebring

Theses

The use of Fourier and modulation transfer techniques implies the ability to characterize an optical system and predict the output resulting from various inputs. In this study, the optical system is defined as a projection system, rear projection screen, and the human eye. A determination of modulation thresholds of visibility for a series of sinusoidal (in transmittance) test objects results after some manipulation in the modulation transfer function of the complete system. This result is then used to predict the subject's ability to resolve conventional acuity challenges. These conventional test objects are then manufactured for projection in the system. Correlation …

The Effect Of Band-Passed Spatial Noise On The Perception Of Grain, Wallace Carpenter May 1981

The Effect Of Band-Passed Spatial Noise On The Perception Of Grain, Wallace Carpenter

Theses

A one octave ranged noise target was constructed with the aid of fourier optics and band-pass spatial filtering. Band-limited noise targets of varying degrees of percent modulation were then generated as a means of determining threshold values of noise perception at low spatial frequencies.
