Means Of Lowering The Contrast Of Association Product Printing Plates, Ming-Hwa Wang Nov 1982

Means Of Lowering The Contrast Of Association Product Printing Plates, Ming-Hwa Wang

Theses

The Association Product is a photosensitive coating for continuous-tone litho plates (It can also be used as a plate coating for halftone printing). It consists of phenolic resin and poly(ethylene oxide) and is photosensitized by a water soluble sensitizer. Continuous-tone lithography has better quality potential than the halftone process. Because the halftone process converts the continuous-tone image of the original into small dots of varying sizes, it thus inherently degrades the image quality and adds time and material costs in screening. The water soluble sensitizer converts the hydrophilic Association Product to an oleophilic state in direct proportion to exposing energy, …

Design, Tuning And Performance Evaluation Of An Automated Pulmonary Nodule Detection System, William Lampeter Nov 1982

Design, Tuning And Performance Evaluation Of An Automated Pulmonary Nodule Detection System, William Lampeter

Theses

Radiologists miss about 25-30% of all pulmonary nodules smaller than 1.0 cm. in mass screenings. A system for the automated detection of the pulmonary nodule based on that of Hallard has been designed, tuned, and tested on a 43 chest radiographs [Ballard, 1973). The goal of this system is to aid the radiologist in locating a pulmonary nodule by indicating a few sites in the radiograph that are most likely to be nodules. Computer image analysis programs that respond to specific types of anatomic features have been devised and are incorporated in a pattern recognizer, which uses linear discriminant analysis …

The Graphic Arts Industry In Mexico - Training And Educational Aspects, Orbe Garcia

Theses

THE GRAPHIC ARTS INDUSTRY IN MEXICO - TRAINING AND EDUCATIONAL ASPECTS Purpose of the Study: The general purpose of the study was to identify the training/educational needs existing in the graphic arts industry in Mexico and to make an assessment of the present situation and how those needs are being met. Specific purposes were to determine how the existing training/educating plans and programs are dealing with the influx of new technology being imported; to examine the type of new technology being purchased, by which sectors and the reasons for capital and equipment expenditures by these sectors; to analyse what problems …

The Effects Of Mechanical Stress On Photographic Emulsions, Dennis A. Weiss Nov 1982

The Effects Of Mechanical Stress On Photographic Emulsions, Dennis A. Weiss

Theses

The effects of mechanical stress on a photographic emulsion, namely Kodak Royal-X Panchromatic, has been investigated. The effects are related to the phenomenon of "Kink Desensitization" of the photographic emulsion. Despite the numerous experiments, results and explanations by previous authors on this phenomenon, a model relating the effects of mechanical stress on emulsions and dislocation theory of strained crystals still evades the photographic scientist. Strips of emulsion were axially stressed, using a Dillon tensiometer modified for compression. To analyze the changes in photo graphic sensitivity of the emulsion, the characteristic curves of the developed internal and external images were compared …

An Active Filter Design Program (Theory And Application), Louis Gabello Nov 1982

An Active Filter Design Program (Theory And Application), Louis Gabello

Theses

This thesis deals with the design of filters in the frequency domain. The intention of the thesis is to present an overview of the concepts of filter design along with two significant developments: a comprehensive filter design computer program and the theoretical development of an Nth order elliptic filter design procedure. The overview is presented in a fashion which accents the filter design process. The topics discussed include defining the attenuation requirements, normalization, determining the poles and zeros, denormalization and implementation. For each of these topics the text ad dresses the fundamental filter types (low pass through band stop). Within …

Analysis Of Ink Film Thickness On Screenless Lithographic Plates By Microscopy, James Spruill Summers Oct 1982

Analysis Of Ink Film Thickness On Screenless Lithographic Plates By Microscopy, James Spruill Summers

Theses

Printing without the use of a halftone screen pattern offers many advantages, although most processes utilized are impractical for long run commercial printing. Screenless lithography provides a practical means of making unscreened reproductions. While screenless lithography has been in use for many years, its working mechanisms have only recently been explained. Past studies have investigated many of the factors which contribute to the continuous tone effect of screenless printing, but none have scientifically determined if ink film thickness variation is a contributing factor. Positive working lithographic plates were exposed to control scales, processed, inked, and allowed to dry. These plates …
