Synthesis And Characterization Of Poly(Amide-Sulfonamides), Michael J. Amone

Theses

Nine novel poly (amide-sulfonamides) having general structures 1-3 shown below, have been prepared utilizing low temperature solution polymerization. Variously substituted dianilines containing preformed sulfonamide linkages have been reacted with terephthaloyl chloride, isophthaloyl chloride and sebacyl chloride to yield polymer structures 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

A Microprocessor Based Hybrid System For Digital Error Correction, Peter H. Sohn Jun 1984

A Microprocessor Based Hybrid System For Digital Error Correction, Peter H. Sohn

Theses

The design of a microprocessor based hybrid system for digital error correction is presented. It is shown that such a system allows for implementation of several cyclic codes at a variety of throughput rates providing variable degrees of error correction depending on current user requirements. The theoretical basis for encoding and decoding of binary BCH codes is reviewed. Design and implementation of system hardware and software are described. A method for injection of independent bit errors with controllable statistics into the system is developed, and its accuracy verified by computer simulation. This method of controllable error injection is used to …

Ceramic Sculpture, Hans Rene Schroder May 1984

Ceramic Sculpture, Hans Rene Schroder

Theses

I intend to create ceramic sculpture that will contrast and combine personal references (real or imagined) from natural and man-made environments. Within this context, I wish to explore the concepts of volume, structure, texture, and their mutual interactions. Another concern will be the use of color in order to enhance the sense of the object's construction, but also to point out the natural, random elements of ceramic processes.

Color Vision Tests Using A Calibrated Color Monitor Controlled By A Microprocessor, David Wolf May 1984

Color Vision Tests Using A Calibrated Color Monitor Controlled By A Microprocessor, David Wolf

Theses

A feasibility study was performed to determine if colors on a CRT could be measured accurately and then controlled by a computer to provide a means of performing color vision tests. Benefits from using a calibrated computer/monitor system could be decreased testing time, exact diagnosis, and possibly the means of quantifing the degree of the deficiency. The Atari 800XL Computer with a Sakata color monitor were used for the experimentation due to their low cost, availability, and ability to create the largest number of colors of any computer in the same price range. The system was calibrated and color vision …

The Vitality Of Portraiture, Diana Smolenski May 1984

The Vitality Of Portraiture, Diana Smolenski

Theses

I am a painter of people, of faces, recording lives on canvas. I would not say that I love people. They make me nervous and uncomfortable (particularly in large crowds); however, they fascinate me. I have spent hours observing their mannerisms and expressions. I have absorbed through them much of what life offers simply by watching them pass by me on streets, buses, and in cafes, parks, barrooms, and diners . I am interested in describing people through visual imagery and revealing who they are to others. My concern is not merely to duplicate reality, but to seek a higher …

Photometric Processing And Interpretation Of Ratioed Imagery By Multivariate Discriminant Analysis For Separation Of Geological Types, Donald Marsh May 1984

Photometric Processing And Interpretation Of Ratioed Imagery By Multivariate Discriminant Analysis For Separation Of Geological Types, Donald Marsh

Theses

A study has investigated the ability of ratioed information from Landsat 2 Multispectral imagery, to discriminate geological features through the application of photometric processing techniques. United States Geologic:.1 survey maps corresponding to the areas investigated have been used in correlation with ratioed imagery to identify predict and confirm geological features on the basis of resulting densitometric information. A multivariate, discriminant analysis of rock type, exposure data has enabled the fabrication of the final, optimized ratio image. The optimisation process used to predict geological types involved a priority structure that found the spectral bands with the highest discriminatory power and the …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Image Angle On Resolution Of Fine Detail Screen Printing, Amy L. Feldman May 1984

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Image Angle On Resolution Of Fine Detail Screen Printing, Amy L. Feldman

Theses

Screen printing, unlike other printing processes, requires ink to be pushed through the image carrier to the substrate. When the mesh threads and their intersections cross the image area, they act as obstructions to the ink flow. In large image areas, the effect of mesh interference is minimal. In fine detail screen printing, mesh interference is a primary cause of poor or inaccurate resolution. The trend in screen printing has been toward more and finer fine line, halftone and four-color process printing. Researching methods to minimize mesh interference will enable screen printers to gain greater control over the printing process …

A Study Of The Effect Of Coating Variations On Resolution Performance In The Single-Phase Association Product Plates, Te-Chung Chen May 1984

A Study Of The Effect Of Coating Variations On Resolution Performance In The Single-Phase Association Product Plates, Te-Chung Chen

Theses

Most people conceive of lithography as a planographic method of printing. In point of fact, only some of the original lithographic plates had truly planographic surfaces. Most lithographic plates used in industry today do not have the same material in the image and non-image areas, so they are called double-phase plates . Because of light undercutting and the roughness of the grain structure of the carrier, the use of conventional double-phase plates for fine image reproduction, where resolution is the main concern, has been limited. The purpose of this study was to determine the image formation mechanism of single-phase plates …

Tapestries In Transition, Dana Berendt Loud May 1984

Tapestries In Transition, Dana Berendt Loud

Theses

The objective of this thesis is to explore drapery and fabric studies through the use of tapestry techniques. It is intended that these portrayals will convey volume, depth and a sense of richness through the use of fabric as their subject. These tapestries will employ a classical approach in an attempt to combine drawing and weaving in a unique and fresh manner.

An Investigation Into The Penumbral Dose Of A Bloxel, (Block Element) Matrix-Design Block To Replace Currently Utilized Radiation Treatment Field Shaping Techniques, Theresa Ciccone May 1984

An Investigation Into The Penumbral Dose Of A Bloxel, (Block Element) Matrix-Design Block To Replace Currently Utilized Radiation Treatment Field Shaping Techniques, Theresa Ciccone

Theses

Presented here is an investigation to establish physical rationale for the acceptance by physicians of a new form of blocking device for radiotherapy. The focus of the investigation is on the percent dosage obtained in the penumbral regions created by 6 mm and 9 mm stepped-edge blocks, relative to a straight edge, when exposed to 1.25 and 18 MeV photons.

Emas, Elton Pride May 1984

Emas, Elton Pride

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to design a database for videotex from the view point of a Graphic Designer without ignoring technological aspects. I am dealing with a problem that has been overlooked and needs to be addressed the problem of database structure, search procedure, and retrieval of information for videotex. The goal is to design a database for videotex that will give the user ease of manipulation of information and better retrieval of that information with high interactivity and massive random access.

Indecisions In Patti Scoffield, Larry D. Lean May 1984

Indecisions In Patti Scoffield, Larry D. Lean

Theses

A thesis, for me, wasn't easy to produce. The embryonic ideas that led to its creation surfaced in the Fall of 1982. It began with "writing" that, for no other reason than to categorize, I called poems. These poems were the stimulus for the thesis that was displayed for one week in March of 1984. In the next few pages, I will try to unravel and explore some of the complexities that produced the thesis project, "Indecisions In Patti Scoffield".

Combining The Graphics Arts And Fine Arts For Artistic Expression Using The Medium Of Printmaking, Linda Condon-Howe May 1984

Combining The Graphics Arts And Fine Arts For Artistic Expression Using The Medium Of Printmaking, Linda Condon-Howe

Theses

This thesis is divided into two sections. The first deals with my development as a printmaker. In this section I will show how my education and work experience, which include both fine arts and graphic arts, have affected the growth of my imagery. The second section I am concerned primarily with the conception and creation of the images rather than the technical production details. only when the techniques are unusual or unconventional will I discuss them.

Korean Ikat, Kyung S. Lee May 1984

Korean Ikat, Kyung S. Lee

Theses

Imagine yourself without a sewing machine, broad fabric, simple paper patterns, a tape measure, or even a sharp pair of scissors. These are the beginning of folkloric clothes. The clothes for the most part are made from square and oblong pieces, put together like a jigsaw puzzle with narrow fabric lengths from hand looms. They are made of curving circles, curves and tapered seams, with no waste of materials. It all sounds very primitive, but on a closer inspection, traditional clothes are everything that most modern fashions are not. They are practical, versatile, comfortable, durable and flattering; in short, masterpieces …

Glass In A Slump, Peter Andres May 1984

Glass In A Slump, Peter Andres

Theses

This thesis has been formed in two major segments. The first portion deals with glass information including processes and techniques. The second addresses my work in terms of personal issues, manner of approach, symbolism, composition, visual eclecticism and internal source of imagery. The subjects dealt with in the two sections are mutually modified in their working relationship. Each yields to the pressure of the other as I constantly want to do more than I am able. I have separated them for the sake of clarity, as I conceive them; the first being the means and the second the end. Even …
