Distributed File Systems For Unix, Edward Ford Feb 1986

Distributed File Systems For Unix, Edward Ford

Theses

With the advent of distributed systems, mechanisms that support efficient resource sharing are necessary to exploit a distributed architecture. One of the key resources UNIX provides is a hierarchical file system. Early efforts supported distributed UNIX systems by copying files and sending mail between individual machines. The desire to provide transparent mechanisms on which distributed systems access resources has propelled the development of distributed file systems. This thesis presents a brief history of the development of distributed systems based on UNIX, and surveys recent implementations of distributed file systems based on UNIX. The IBIS distributed file system is an example …

A Study And Systematic Data Collecting And Analysis Of Changes In Production Control System, Frank Adae Feb 1986

A Study And Systematic Data Collecting And Analysis Of Changes In Production Control System, Frank Adae

Theses

The purpose of this study is to measure the effective ness of a change in workflow in an order entry department of a forms manufacturing plant. The difference is measured between the original and the revised workflow systems to draw conclusions on a quantitative basis. The original workflow procedure was set up for the job ticket, composed of the paper work and the artwork, to travel together through the first six of nine operations in the order entry department. Then the artwork split from the paper work and was forwarded to the art department, where the mechanical artwork was created, …

A Novel Technique To The Solution Of Transient Electromagnetic Scattering From Thin Wires, Sadasiva Rao, Tapan Sarkar, Sohail Dianat Jan 1986

A Novel Technique To The Solution Of Transient Electromagnetic Scattering From Thin Wires, Sadasiva Rao, Tapan Sarkar, Sohail Dianat

Articles

Previous approaches to the problem of transient scattering by conducting bodies have utilized the well-known marching-on-in-time solution procedures. However, these procedures are very dependent on discretization techniques and in many cases lead to instabilities as time progresses. Moreover, the accuracy of the solution procedure cannot be verified easily and usually there is no error estimation. Recently an alternate approach to the solution of transient scattering by thin wires was presented based on the conjugate gradient (CG) method. In this procedure, space and time are discretized independently into subintervals and the error is minimized iteratively. Unfortunately, this procedure is very slow, …

Adaptive Spectral Estimation By The Conjugate-Gradient Method, Huanqun Chen, Tapan Sarkar, Sohail Dianat Jan 1986

Adaptive Spectral Estimation By The Conjugate-Gradient Method, Huanqun Chen, Tapan Sarkar, Sohail Dianat

Articles

This paper proposes an alternative technique for adaptive spectral estimation. The new technique applies the method of conjugate gradient, which is used for iteratively finding the generalized eigenvector corresponding to the minimum generalized eigenvalue of a semidefinite Hermitian matrix, to the adaptive spectral analysis problem. Computer simulations have been performed to compare the new method to existing ones. From the limited examples presented, it is seen that the new method is computationally more efficient at the expense of more core storage. Also, this method is effective for small data records and can implement noise correction to yield unbiased spectral estimates …

Finding Simple T-Designs By Using Basis Reduction, Donald Kreher, Stanislaw Radziszowski Jan 1986

Finding Simple T-Designs By Using Basis Reduction, Donald Kreher, Stanislaw Radziszowski

Articles

In 1976, Kramer and Mesner observed that finding a t-design with a given automorphism group can be reduced to solving a matrix problem of the form AX=M, X[i]=0 or I, for all i, I < =i=6 and duplicate the results of Leavitt, Kramer and Magliveras [3,10] in substantially shorter time. Furthermore, a new simple 6-design was found using the algorithm described in this paper

An Investigation Of Flexographic Duotone Reproduction With Variations In Press Pressure Settings, Hirohiko Itoh Jan 1986

An Investigation Of Flexographic Duotone Reproduction With Variations In Press Pressure Settings, Hirohiko Itoh

Theses

Improved print quality has been become an important issue for the flexographic printing method. This is especially true in the area of fine quality halftone reproduction. The nature of this printing method which uses elastic materials for its printing plate is difficult to control. The main issue is the control of the pressure between the plate and the substrate. Extensive research has been done to change the hardness and the structure of the plate, however, the pressure used to transfer ink still remains a critical factor in achieving good halftone quality. Although the critical pressure control of the impression from …

Dib On The Xerox Workstation, Chien-Kuo Chuang Jan 1986

Dib On The Xerox Workstation, Chien-Kuo Chuang

Theses

DIB - A Distributed Implementation of Backtracking is a general-purpose package which allows applications that use tree-traversal algorithms such as backtrack and branch-and-bound to be easily implemented on a multicomputer. The application program needs to specify only the root of the recursion tree, the computation to be performed at each node, and how to generate children at each node. In addition, the application program may optionally specify how to synthesize values of tree nodes from their children's values and how to disseminate information in the tree. DIB uses a distributed algorithm, transparent to the application programmer, that can divide the …

Storage Of Information On Color Photographic Materials With Applications To Optical Memory Disks, Andrew Juenger Jan 1986

Storage Of Information On Color Photographic Materials With Applications To Optical Memory Disks, Andrew Juenger

Theses

An experiment was performed to investigate the information capacity of Ilford Cibachrome Micrographic Film type CMM.F7, Kodak Aerial Color Film type SO-242, and Kodak Vericolor Print Film type 4111. The results indicated that the filmSj-had binary single layer information capacities of 9.51 x 10 , 3.27 x 10 , and 0.87 x 10 bits per square centimeter respectively. It was estimated that the CMM.F7 material was capable of resolving three density levels for c trilayer multilevel capacity of 45.2 x 10 bits per square centimeter, followed by SQ-242 and 4111 with five and six levels yielding 22.8 x 10 and …
