Board 51: An Initial Step Towards Measuring First-Generation College Students’ Personal Agency: A Scale Validation, Dina Verdín, Allison Godwin Jan 2019

Board 51: An Initial Step Towards Measuring First-Generation College Students’ Personal Agency: A Scale Validation, Dina Verdín, Allison Godwin

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

This research paper describes the development of a scale to measure how first-generation college students use engineering as a tool for making a difference in their community and world or personal agency. Personal agency is a capability that every individual holds; it is described by Bandura as an individual’s beliefs about their capabilities to exercise control over events that affect their lives through purposeful and reflective actions. Agentic actions allow students to explore, maneuver and impact their environment for the achievement of a goal or set of goals. This study identifies how cognitive processes of forethought, intention, reactivity, and reflection …

Feature Acquisition In Second Language Phonetic Development: Evidence From Phonetic Training, Daniel J. Olson Jan 2019

Feature Acquisition In Second Language Phonetic Development: Evidence From Phonetic Training, Daniel J. Olson

School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

This study employed a targeted phonetic instruction to explore the mechanisms that underpin second language (L2) phonetic acquisition. Broadly, two general approaches to phonetic acquisition have been previously proposed. A segmental approach suggests that learners acquire a series of individual, discrete phonemes (e.g., Flege, 1995), while a featural approach posits that L2 phonetic development occurs at the subsegmental level of the feature, which may be shared across multiple phonemes (e.g., de Jong, Hao, & Park, 2009). This study extended this line of research, using a visual feedback paradigm to train English speakers on one of the three voiceless stop consonants …

Phonological Processes Across Word And Language Boundaries: Evidence From Code-Switching, Daniel J. Olson Jan 2019

Phonological Processes Across Word And Language Boundaries: Evidence From Code-Switching, Daniel J. Olson

School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

Previous research on the phonetics and phonology of code-switching has largely focused on word internal phenomenon, such as voice onset time. However, many phonological processes occur across word boundaries, and in the case of code-switching, potentially across language boundaries. This study examines the application of phonological rules across word and language boundaries in cases of code-switching, exploiting cross-linguistic differences in voicing assimilation and spirantization processes in English and Spanish. Results from an oral production paradigm conducted with Spanish–English bilinguals showed an asymmetrical impact of code-switching: switched and non-switched tokens differed in Spanish, but not English. A similar pattern was found …

An Evaluation Of Dsm–5 Section Iii Personality Disorder Criterion A (Impairment) In Accounting For Psychopathology., Chelsea E. Sleep, Donald R. Lynam, Thomas A. Widiger, Michael L. Crowe, Joshua D. Miller Jan 2019

An Evaluation Of Dsm–5 Section Iii Personality Disorder Criterion A (Impairment) In Accounting For Psychopathology., Chelsea E. Sleep, Donald R. Lynam, Thomas A. Widiger, Michael L. Crowe, Joshua D. Miller

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

An alternative diagnostic model of personality disorders (AMPD) was introduced in DSM–5 that diagnoses PDs based on the presence of personality impairment (Criterion A) and pathological personality traits (Criterion B). Research examining Criterion A has been limited to date, due to the lack of a specific measure to assess it; this changed, however, with the recent publication of a self-report assessment of personality dysfunction as defined by Criterion A (Levels of Personality Functioning Scale—Self-report; LPFS-SR; Morey, 2017). The aim of the current study was to test several key propositions regarding the role of Criterion A in the AMPD including the …

Risk-Based Construction Inspection, Xin Xu, Yuxi Zhang, Chenxi Yuan, Hubo Cai, Dulcy M. Abraham, Mark D. Bowman Jan 2019

Risk-Based Construction Inspection, Xin Xu, Yuxi Zhang, Chenxi Yuan, Hubo Cai, Dulcy M. Abraham, Mark D. Bowman

JTRP Technical Reports

Construction inspection is a critical component in the quality assurance (QA) program to ensure the quality and long-term performance of pavements. Over the years, INDOT has been developing and modifying its standard specification to set requirements for construction inspection and material testing. With the retirement of experienced employees, INDOT is challenged with the lack of knowledge to effectively inspect the critical elements of construction results/deliverables such as pavement, soil embankment, and bridge (decks). There is a critical need for INDOT to allocate limited resources to the riskiest areas and equip construction inspectors with necessary knowledge to conduct inspection, ensure the …

Cost-Effectiveness Of Constructing Minimal Shelter To Store Indot Equipment (Weather Protection), Ananth V. Iyer, Steven R. Dunlop, Dutt J. Thakkar, Naveed Lalani, Charul Bagla, Andrew Colbert, Rohan Shah

JTRP Technical Reports

Currently vehicles used by INDOT are more likely to be subject to maintenance and repair than to replacement. The extent of wear and tear on the vehicles is likely to be impacted by the lack of covered storage in all districts. There are many different levels of covered storage—from tent-like structures to completely covered garages to temperature-controlled environments—each of which has different associated costs. But the associated reduction in equipment wear, speed of startup of equipment, and perhaps better mileage may all reflect savings to INDOT. This project evaluates INDOT’s expected return on investment to create covered areas for equipment …

Rumble Stripes And Pavement Marking Delineation, Steven Zehr, Brandon Hardin, Hillary Lowther, Dana Plattner, Timothy Wells, Ayman Habib, Darcy M. Bullock Jan 2019

Rumble Stripes And Pavement Marking Delineation, Steven Zehr, Brandon Hardin, Hillary Lowther, Dana Plattner, Timothy Wells, Ayman Habib, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Technical Reports

Pavement markings serve an important role on the highway and must be visible in day, night, and wet conditions. Pavement markings placed in grooved pavement are receiving considerable interest due to their potential for greater durability by providing protection from plow blades used during winter maintenance. Raised pavement markers (RPMs) are also used for roadway delineation, and the failure rate of RPMs in and in between rumble depressions is also of interest. This study evaluated white edge lines and yellow edge lines on roads in Indiana and other northern states, as well as RPMs in and in between rumble depressions. …

A Laboratory Study Of Apron-Riprap Design For Small-Culvert Outlets, Dennis A. Lyn, Siddharth Saksena, Sayan Dey, Venkatesh Merwade

JTRP Technical Reports

The present study investigated primarily the appropriate stone-sizing of on-grade riprap aprons, and more specifically whether the current INDOT design policy may be overly conservative especially within the context of smaller culverts. In the study, laboratory experiments were performed with two pipe diameters, D = 4.25 in (0.35 ft) and 5.75 in (0.48 ft), and four stone sizes, median diameters estimated to be d50 = 0.61 in, 1.22 in, 1.73 in, and 2.24 in, for a range of discharges and tailwater depths. Video records were made of the laboratory apron to detect stone-mobilization events, and stable and unstable cases …

Shifts In Dominant Tree Mycorrhizal Associations In Response To Anthropogenic Impacts, Insu Jo, Songlin Fei, Christopher M. Oswalt, Grant M. Domke, Richard P. Phillips

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Plant-fungal symbioses play critical roles in vegetation dynamics and nutrient cycling, modulating the impacts of global changes on ecosystem functioning. Here, we used forest inventory data consisting of more than 3 million trees to develop a spatially resolved “mycorrhizal tree map” of the contiguous United States. We show that abundances of the two dominant mycorrhizal tree groups—arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal trees—are associated primarily with climate. Further, we show that anthropogenic influences, primarily nitrogen (N) deposition and fire suppression, in concert with climate change, have increased AM tree dominance during the past three decades in the eastern United States. Given …

JTRP Affiliated Reports

Millions of miles of existing U.S. storm water culverts are critical for roadway safety but much of this infrastructure requires repair. State departments of transportation (DOT) are increasingly choosing to rehabilitate culverts with spray-on and cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining processes. These culvert lining practices involve the manufacture of a new plastic liner inside a damaged culvert. DOTs are selecting these outdoor plastic manufacturing methods partly to avoid open-trench excavation, which can cause traffic disruption and work zone traffic safety issues. This study was conducted to better understand current knowledge about culvert lining caused environmental contamination, final product quality, and recommend …

Utilization Of Dedicated Electric Vehicle Plug-In Charging Stations In A College Campus Environment, Jijo K. Mathew, Deborah Horton, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Affiliated Reports

As electric mobility is expanding at a rapid pace, the standardized availability of gas stations compared to a scarcity of charging stations continues to be the greatest challenge for electric vehicles. With cities, university campuses and businesses promoting electric vehicle infrastructure and incentives, it is necessary to develop key performance metrics and visualizations that can track the utilization of the charging infrastructure. This study performs a manual data collection at dedicated plug-in charging stations across Purdue University to assess their utilization. Approximately 2,800 observations were conducted over 50 days across seven level 2 plug-in charging stations. Results showed that for …
