A Brave New World: Threshold Concepts And First Year Student Information Literacy, Tim Ormsby Aug 2019

A Brave New World: Threshold Concepts And First Year Student Information Literacy, Tim Ormsby

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

For many years, Flinders University Library has provided a library quiz, primarily aimed at first year students. Starting life as a paper-based assignment, the quiz was moved into the University’s learning management system in the 2000s. The library quiz focused purely on practical information literacy skills: how to search the catalogue, how to search databases etc.

As time went on, it became clear that the quiz was not working. The videos and screenshots quickly became obsolete with frequent database interface changes. We were constantly updating the quiz at our busiest time of the year. It just was not sustainable. More …

The Push-Pull Of Digital Literacy, Jo Coldwell-Neilson, Kat Cain Aug 2019

The Push-Pull Of Digital Literacy, Jo Coldwell-Neilson, Kat Cain

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Digital literacy within higher education was originally grounded in Gilster’s (1997) definition that essentially framed it as information literacy using technologies. This has necessarily evolved over the past two decades in conjunction with rapid technological advances. Digital literacy concepts have attempted to match the changing landscape engendered by ubiquitous and ever more available technologies, where cybersecurity and accessibility, multimodal communication channels, and push-pull models of information delivery impact the way we learn, work and play. A dizzying plethora of digital literacy definitions has emerged, with no common understanding of what it means or what skills and capabilities it reflects. Concomitantly, …

Uncovering Digital Literacy And Supporting The Implicit: A Case Study Of Library-Faculty Collaboration, Blair Kelly Aug 2019

Uncovering Digital Literacy And Supporting The Implicit: A Case Study Of Library-Faculty Collaboration, Blair Kelly

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Digital literacy is increasingly seen as an important skill for 21st century university students. Alongside this, notions of ‘digital natives’ who intuitively or implicitly understand digital literacy persist, despite evidence to the contrary.

In order to better understand how digital literacy is expressed in course curriculum, and therefore provide more effective support to students, Deakin University Library worked with academic staff in the University’s School of Medicine to uncover where digital literacy was assessed across the span of a Master of Optometry degree. This process also revealed to what extent the underpinning digital literacy skills and knowledge needed to …

Laboratory Animal Welfare And Human Attitudes: A Cross-Sectional Survey On Heterospecific Play Or “Rat Tickling”, Megan R. Lafollette, Sylvie Cloutier, Colleen Brady, Brianna N. Gaskill, Marguerite E. O'Haire Aug 2019

Laboratory Animal Welfare And Human Attitudes: A Cross-Sectional Survey On Heterospecific Play Or “Rat Tickling”, Megan R. Lafollette, Sylvie Cloutier, Colleen Brady, Brianna N. Gaskill, Marguerite E. O'Haire

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Introduction

Laboratory rat welfare is critically influenced by laboratory animal personnel through their implementation, or lack of implementation, of various enrichment techniques. One such promising technique is heterospecific play, or “rat tickling”, which mimics aspects of rat rough-and-tumble play and can contribute to improving welfare, but may be infrequently implemented. The theory of planned behavior can be used to study implementation by measuring intentions and beliefs about rat tickling, including behavioral attitudes (whether it is good or bad), subjective norms (whether there is social/professional pressure to provide it), and control beliefs (whether they feel in control of providing it). Therefore, …

Subsurface Mimo: A Beamforming Design In Internet Of Underground Things For Digital Agriculture Applications, Abdul Salam

Faculty Publications

In underground (UG) multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO), the transmit beamforming is used to focus energy in the desired direction. There are three different paths in the underground soil medium through which the waves propagates to reach at the receiver. When the UG receiver receives a desired data stream only from the desired path, then the UG MIMO channel becomes three path (lateral, direct, and reflected) interference channel. Accordingly, the capacity region of the UG MIMO three path interference channel and degrees of freedom (multiplexing gain of this MIMO channel requires careful modeling). Therefore, expressions are required for the degree of …

Power Characterization: Measuring Adhesion Forces, Kacie Bradfish Aug 2019

Power Characterization: Measuring Adhesion Forces, Kacie Bradfish

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

Powder behavior is a complex topic that influences many industrial processes, especially those involved with food and pharmaceutical processing, and has an important role in homeland security and military applications involving explosives and explosive residues. The goal of the research is to be able to predict bulk flow behavior from milligram-level quantities of powder. This is important for designing better industrial processes, and also for measuring forces between explosive particles and binders for controlling detonations. In order to characterize a powder, a centrifuge is used to determine the rotational speed, in RPM, needed to remove particles of different size from …

The Near Tragedy Of Gemini 8: How Neil Armstrong’S First Space Mission Was Almost His Last, Sam Conkle

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

As the space race heated up in the sixties, NASA was scrambling to get ready to put a man on the moon. Though the Apollo program is the one that landed the U.S. on the moon, the Gemini program ensured we had the necessary training and technology to make it to the moon and back. The Gemini 8 mission represented many firsts in NASA’s long journey to the moon. It was the first attempt at docking, an essential and technologically challenging step that is often overlooked in the grand scale of the moon landing. It was also Neil Armstrong’s first …

Mimicry: A Short Play, Diana M. Pho Aug 2019

Mimicry: A Short Play, Diana M. Pho

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This short play is inspired by the author’s lived experience as a queer Vietnamese-American woman in academia and in US society. This theatrical piece, centered around two young women meeting for the first time after several years, reflects upon the mutable divergence of shared memory, while also exploring intersectional feminist theory and the Vietnamese-American community. This is also a critique of US-based stereotypes about young Asian-American women, and how social prejudices and microaggressions can result in internalized anti-Asian misogyny. Like the range of identities and life experiences that characters Laurel and Mattie have, the Asian diasporic experience in the United …

From Creative Writing To A Self’S Liberation: A Monologue Of A Struggling Writer, Ethan Trinh

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

The pressure of being alone in a new country and of surviving in a competitive academia has scared me to death. I cannot find any better way to heal me other than writing. Writing helps me make sense of the worlds and come closer to my true self. This piece is journeying from my own struggles of a Vietnamese, queer, immigrant teacher to accept who I am as a writer. In addition, writing this piece helps me get closer to decademizing academic writing in higher education.

Propuestas Para (Re)Construir Una Nación : El Teatro De Emilia Pardo Bazán, Margot Versteeg Aug 2019

Propuestas Para (Re)Construir Una Nación : El Teatro De Emilia Pardo Bazán, Margot Versteeg

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Propuestas para (re)construir una nación explores how Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851–1921) imagines and engenders the Spanish nation in her theatrical production staged and/or published between 1898 and 1909. In the aftermath of Spain’s colonial losses, when Spain’s male authors, in a growing mood of collective introspection, directed their attention to the homeland, Pardo Bazán generated a series of theatrical proposals to revitalize the nation. In her plays, she manifests her ideas about Spain’s fin de siècle crisis, reflects on Spain’s place in the international arena (emphasizing the nation’s civilizing mission), critiques the intoxicating power of the so-called golden legend (Spain’s …

The Basic Trait Of Antagonism: An Unfortunately Underappreciated Construct, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller Aug 2019

The Basic Trait Of Antagonism: An Unfortunately Underappreciated Construct, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Antagonism, the low pole of Agreeableness, references traits related to immorality, combativeness, grandiosity, callousness, and distrustfulness. It is a robust correlate of externalizing behaviors such as antisocial behavior, aggression, and substance use; in fact, in many cases, it is the strongest trait correlate. It represents the core of many important and impactful psychopathological constructs (e.g., psychopathy, antisocial and narcissistic personality disorders). It is also central to models of general and disordered personality, psychopathology, and interpersonal behavior. As Neuroticism is core to understanding the intense distress and suffering that comes with internalizing disorders, Antagonism is core to understanding the impairment and …

To provide a roadmap for early career researchers to identify journals aligned with their interests, we analyzed major research themes found across the top 30 ecology journals and three high-impact multi-disciplinary journals (Nature, PNAS, and Science), utilizing an automated content analysis (ACA) of 84,841 article abstracts, titles, and author keywords published over the last four decades. Journals clustered into 10 distinct groups based on 46 research themes identified by ACA. We examined the …

Teaching In The Now: John Dewey On The Educational Present, Jeff Frank Aug 2019

Teaching In The Now: John Dewey On The Educational Present, Jeff Frank

Purdue University Press Book Previews

John Dewey’s Experience and Education is an important book, but first-time readers of Dewey’s philosophy can find it challenging and not meaningfully related to the contemporary landscape of education. Jeff Frank’s Teaching in the Now aims to reanimate Dewey’s text—for first-time readers and anyone who teaches the text or is interested in appreciating Dewey’s continuing significance—by focusing on Dewey’s thinking on preparation. Frank, through close readings of Dewey, asks readers to wonder: How much of what we justify as preparation in education is actually necessary? That is, every time we catch ourselves telling a student—you need to learn this in …

The communication between connected vehicles and traffic signal controllers is defined in SAE Surface Vehicle Standard J2735. SAE J2735 defines traffic signal status messages and a series of 16 confidence levels for traffic signal transitions. This paper discusses a statistical method for tabulating traffic signal data by phase and time of day and populating the SAE J2735 messages. Graphical representation of the red-green and green-yellow transitions are presented from six intersections along a 4-mile corridor for five different time of day timing plans. The case study provided illustrates the importance of characterizing the stochastic variation of traffic signals to understand …

Using Connected Vehicle Data To Reassess Dilemma Zone Performance Of Heavy Vehicles, Howell Li, Tom Platte, Jijo K. Mathew, W. Benjamin Smith, Enrique Saldivar-Carranza, Darcy M. Bullock Jul 2019

Using Connected Vehicle Data To Reassess Dilemma Zone Performance Of Heavy Vehicles, Howell Li, Tom Platte, Jijo K. Mathew, W. Benjamin Smith, Enrique Saldivar-Carranza, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Affiliated Reports

The rate of fatalities at signalized intersections involving heavy vehicles is nearly five times higher than for passenger vehicles in the US. Previous studies in the US have found that heavy vehicles are twice as likely to violate a red light compared with passenger vehicles. Current technologies leverage setback detection to extend green time for a particular phase and are based upon typical deceleration rates for passenger cars. Furthermore, dilemma zone detectors are not effective when the max out time expires and forces the onset of yellow. This study proposes the use of connected vehicle (CV) technology to trigger force …

Technical Standards Literacy In Management Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips Jul 2019

Technical Standards Literacy In Management Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Industry standards have a significant impact on business as a means to eliminate waste, reduce costs, market products (e.g., for quality, safety, interoperability) and lessen liability (Thompson, 2011). Consequently, an understanding of and ability to use standards, agreed upon practices among interested or vested parties, is a critical workplace competency for those engaged in business and industry. To have a workforce competent in the use of standards, higher education curricula must be developed to integrate standards education at appropriate points within the curriculum. Despite the importance of standards, they are not universally integrated into the college and university curricula. Given …

Business Librarians Confronting Predatory Publishing, Marydee Ojala Jul 2019

Business Librarians Confronting Predatory Publishing, Marydee Ojala

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Predatory publishing is a scourge on the information/library landscape. They waste time, spread spurious information, diminish the power of scholarly research, and damage reputations. Cabell’s lists over 12,000 titles in its Blacklist, most of them in the sciences. Should business librarians be concerned about predatory journals? How can we help our faculty and grad students avoid publishing in fake titles, dissuade them from accepting invitations to be on editorial boards of shoddy journals, and warn them about deceptive conferences?

I'll share our assessments as well as things we learned about the process.

A Lightning Introduction To Wrds, Ash Faulkner Jul 2019

A Lightning Introduction To Wrds, Ash Faulkner

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Wharton Research Data Services (commonly known as 'WRDS') is an essential data platform on many university campuses with a research-intensive business program. The platform can host a wide range of data subscriptions including BoardEx, Compustat, CRSP, IBES, Option Metrics, Thompson Reuters data and much more. Often a WRDS subscription is funded through the business program, rather than through the library, but it is essential that business librarians are familiar with this source and if at all possible are able to access and efficiently work through some of the more common data pull requests. As data literacy becomes an increasingly important …
