Authority And Dissent In Jewish Life, Leonard Greenspoon Oct 2020

Authority And Dissent In Jewish Life, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

Throughout the long history of Judaism, many individuals and groups have sought to wield authority on the basis of unique religious, social, familial, military, or political claims. Moving historically from the biblical period to the modern-day State of Israel, Authority and Dissent in Jewish Life discusses a range of those claims to authority from within the Jewish community itself.

Healthy Food Access And Low-Income Teens: A Photovoice Approach, Vicki Simpson, Lindsey Pedigo, Muna Hamdan Rodriguez Oct 2020

Healthy Food Access And Low-Income Teens: A Photovoice Approach, Vicki Simpson, Lindsey Pedigo, Muna Hamdan Rodriguez

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Lack of access to healthy foods disproportionately impacts adolescents. This mixed-methods study used photovoice to explore everyday lived experiences of food access among teens from low-income families, empowering them to share their stories. Sixty-three diverse teens (12-17 years) from across one Midwest state took images and created narratives to support community presentations. Independent content analysis identified themes. Researchers used t tests to compare pre-post differences (p < 0.05) for two scales related to empowerment and positive youth development. Themes suggest teens take on adult responsibilities relative to food access, generally selecting unhealthy foods. Families and after-school programs were critical to food‐related experiences, with cultural differences noted. A statistically significant increase, t(58) = -2.225, p = .032, was noted for “most community leaders in my city would listen to me.” Findings support the need to address factors contributing to difficulties accessing healthy foods in home and community settings.

Aprepitant, An Antiemetic Agent, Interferes With Metal Ion Homeostasis Of Candida Auris And Displays Potent Synergistic Interactions With Azole Drugs, Hassan E. Eldesouky, Nadia A. Lanman, Tony Hazbun, Mohamed N. Seleem

Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications

With the rapid increase in the frequency of azole-resistant species, combination therapy appears to be a promising tool to augment the antifungal activity of azole drugs against resistant Candida species. Here, we report the effect of aprepitant, an antiemetic agent, on the antifungal activities of azole drugs against the multidrug-resistant Candida auris. Aprepitant reduced the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of itraconazole in vitro, by up to eight-folds. Additionally, the aprepitant/itraconazole combination interfered significantly with the biofilm-forming ability of C. auris by 95 ± 0.13%, and significantly disrupted mature biofilms by 52 ± 0.83%, relative to the untreated control. In a …

Examining Sodium And Potassium Channel Conductances Involved In Hyperexcitability Of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A Mathematical And Cell Culture-Based Study, Parul Verma, Muriel Eaton, Achim Kienle, Dietrich Flockerzi, Yang Yang, Doraiswami Ramkrishna

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a prevalent, painful side effect which arises due to a number of chemotherapy agents. CIPN can have a prolonged effect on quality of life. Chemotherapy treatment is often reduced or stopped altogether because of the severe pain. Currently, there are no FDA-approved treatments for CIPN partially due to its complex pathogenesis in multiple pathways involving a variety of channels, specifically, voltage-gated ion channels. One aspect of neuropathic pain in vitro is hyperexcitability in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) peripheral sensory neurons. Our study employs bifurcation theory to investigate the role of voltage-gated ion channels in inducing …

Dairy Product Purchasing In Households With And Without Children, Mario Ortez, Courtney Bir, Nicole Olynk Widmar, Jonathan Townsend

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Dairy products are considered a staple in the American diet due in part to their nutritious content and appealing flavor. Consumption patterns may differ among age segments influenced by preferences for fat content and taste in dairy. Furthermore, having children in their household may influence the amount, frequency, and type of dairy products that a consumer chooses to purchase. This study finds that households that frequently bought food for children generally purchased larger quantities of fluid milk and more fluid milk with a higher fat content. Households with children also bought yogurt more frequently than other households. Labeling information of …

Modeling Of The Electrical Characteristics Of An Organic Field Effect Transistor In Presence Of The Bending Effects, Yi Yang, Robert Nawrocki, Richard Voyles, Haiyan H. Zhang Oct 2020

Modeling Of The Electrical Characteristics Of An Organic Field Effect Transistor In Presence Of The Bending Effects, Yi Yang, Robert Nawrocki, Richard Voyles, Haiyan H. Zhang

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

An analytical model incorporating the density of trap states for a bendable organic field effect transistor (OFET) is presented in this paper. The aim of this work is to propose a novel modeling framework to quantitatively characterize the bending effects on the electrical properties of an OFET in the linear and saturation regimes. In this model, the exponentially distributed shallow trap states are introduced into the Poisson equation to describe the carrier transports in the channel. The carrier mobility takes into account the low field mobility enhancement under gradual channel approximation and high field degradation. As a result, the generalized …

Modeling Land And Hold Short Operations: Balancing Safety And Arrival Rate, Kenneth A. Ward, Heather Owen-Perry Oct 2020

Modeling Land And Hold Short Operations: Balancing Safety And Arrival Rate, Kenneth A. Ward, Heather Owen-Perry

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Many airports conduct simultaneous operations on intersecting runways to increase the rate of takeoffs and landings. This requires landing aircraft to hold short of the intersecting runway, which incurs a safety risk of runway incursions in the process. A Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to analyze the traffic load at maximum operational capacity at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in order to analyze the fleet types and the rate of those landing aircraft unable to stop short of the intersecting runway. The researchers used the actual and four alternative compositions of the subject airline’s aircraft arrivals, interspersed among other airport traffic, to …

Acute Exercise In Mice Transiently Remodels The Hepatic Lipidome In An Intensity-Dependent Manner, Gregory C. Henderson, Valeria Martinez Tenorio, Marc A. Tuazon

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Background

The content of triacylglycerol (TAG) in the liver is known to rapidly increase after a single bout of exercise followed by recovery to sedentary levels. The response of other hepatic lipids, and acyl chain composition of lipid classes, would provide a deeper understanding of the response of hepatic lipid metabolism to acute exercise.

Methods

Female mice performed a single bout of continuous exercise (CE), high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE), or no exercise (CON). The total content of various lipids in the liver, and fatty acids within lipid classes, were measured in tissues collected 3 h after exercise (Day 1) and …

JTRP Data Papers

Assessing the operational performance of traffic signals required detailed information regarding sensors inputs and controller actions. In 2012, a series of enumerations used to encode traffic signal events at a 100 millisecond was developed and published at https://doi.org/10.4231/K4RN35SH. Techniques for using that data are published in https://doi.org/10.5703/1288284315333 and https://doi.org/10.5703/1288284316063

As part of a multi-state Federal Highway Administration pooled fund study, TPF-5(377), a series of stakeholder engagements and panel meetings were conducted in 2018 and 2019 to update these enumerations. In 2020, updates to the enumerations included minor changes to event codes 14, 17, and 54.

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Microbial contamination and biofilm formation are serious challenges in water filtration applications. Recently, carbon nanocomposite membranes with modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have attracted much attention as compelling water purification membranes that can deactivate pathogenic bacteria and prevent biofilm formation. However, the effective attachment of AgNPs onto such carbon-based surfaces has proven difficult to accomplish via inexpensive and rapid fabrication processes. In this study, we introduce a simple laser-assisted process that enables rapid surface functionalization and immobilization of AgNPs onto carbon cloth membrane surfaces comprised of woven carbon micro fibers. The laser functionalization provides a unique modification in surface morphology of …

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

This research work-in-progress paper is a scoping review of published systematic literature reviews (SLRs) in engineering. SLRs are considered one of the highest levels of proof for evidence based decision making, but they are only as good as the methods used, starting with the search strategy. With studies described as “systematic literature reviews” proliferating through engineering disciplines, including engineering education, it is necessary to examine how well these studies reflect a methodologically sound understanding of established SLR processes. The initial search returned 4,992 results, after removing duplicates. After completing the abstract review, we included 2,674 results for full text review. …

Complementing The Us Food And Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System With Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting From Social Media: Comparative Analysis, Zeyun Zhou, Kyle Emerson Hultgren

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Background: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) can occur any time someone uses a medication. ADRs are systematically tracked and cataloged, with varying degrees of success, in order to better understand their etiology and develop methods of prevention. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has developed the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) for this purpose. FAERS collects information from myriad sources, but the primary reporters have traditionally been medical professionals and pharmacovigilance data from manufacturers. Recent studies suggest that information shared publicly on social media platforms related to medication use could be of benefit in complementing FAERS data in order …
