The Future Of The German-Jewish Past: Memory And The Question Of Antisemitism, Gideon Reuveni, Diana Franklin Dec 2020

The Future Of The German-Jewish Past: Memory And The Question Of Antisemitism, Gideon Reuveni, Diana Franklin

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Germany’s acceptance of its direct responsibility for the Holocaust has strengthened its relationship with Israel and has led to a deep commitment to combat antisemitism and rebuild Jewish life in Germany. As we draw close to a time when there will be no more firsthand experience of the horrors of the Holocaust, there is great concern about what will happen when German responsibility turns into history. Will the present taboo against open antisemitism be lifted as collective memory fades? There are alarming signs of the rise of the far right, which includes blatantly antisemitic elements, already visible in public discourse. …

Wandering Jews: Global Jewish Migration, Steven J. Gold

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Despite the importance of historical and contemporary migration to the American Jewish community, popular awareness of the diversity and complexity of the American Jewish migration legacy is limited and largely focused upon Yiddish-speaking Jews who left the Pale of Settlement in Eastern Europe between 1880 and 1920 to settle in eastern and midwestern cities.

Wandering Jews provides readers with a broader understanding of the Jewish experience of migration in the United States and elsewhere. It describes the record of a wide variety of Jewish migrant groups, including those encountering different locations of settlement, historical periods, and facets of the migration …

Military Applications Of Nanotechnology, Alejandro Molestina, Karthik Raja Ravichandran, Michael N. Welleck

Student Papers in Public Policy

Over the past few decades technology has advanced significantly to better meet the needs of people who use them. The very first computer required a whole room and a significant amount of electrical power to make it work. The layperson now has access to technology that is more advanced than the onboard computer of the Mars rover and it is only the size of their hand. We have the capabilities to engineer components at the scale of a nanometer and they can contribute to more advances in technology. The applications of nanotechnology are vast, but one of the areas in …

Singular Vector Filtering Method For Disturbance Enhancement Mitigation In Active Noise Control Systems, Yongjie Zhuang, Xuchen Wang, Yangfan Liu Nov 2020

Singular Vector Filtering Method For Disturbance Enhancement Mitigation In Active Noise Control Systems, Yongjie Zhuang, Xuchen Wang, Yangfan Liu

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In multichannel active noise control systems, when reference signals are correlated, the disturbance enhancement phenomenon is likely to occur, i.e., the resulting sound is enhanced instead of being reduced in some frequency bands, if the filter is designed to minimize the total energy for all frequencies. In previous works, a truncated singular value decomposition method was applied to the system autocorrelation matrix to mitigate the disturbance enhancement due to the correlation of reference signals. Some small singular values and the associated singular vectors are removed, if they are responsible for unwanted disturbance enhancement in some frequency bands. However, some of …

On Many Routes: Internal, European, And Transatlantic Migration In The Late Habsburg Empire, Annemarie Steidl Nov 2020

On Many Routes: Internal, European, And Transatlantic Migration In The Late Habsburg Empire, Annemarie Steidl

Central European Studies

On Many Routes is about the history of human migration. With a focus on the Habsburg Empire, this innovative work presents an integrated and creative study of spatial mobilities: from short to long term, and intranational and inter-European to transatlantic. Migration was not just relegated to city folk, but likewise was the reality for rural dwellers, and we gain a better understanding of how sending and receiving states and shipping companies worked together to regulate migration and shape populations.

Bringing historical census data, governmental statistics, and ship manifests into conversation with centuries-old migration patterns of servants, agricultural workers, seasonal laborers, …

Gcn5: The Quintessential Histone Acetyltransferase, Vikki M. Weake Nov 2020

Gcn5: The Quintessential Histone Acetyltransferase, Vikki M. Weake

Department of Biochemistry Faculty Publications

In this Special Issue, we bring together many of the original researchers involved in the initial studies to identify and characterize Gcn5, together with leaders from the field who have contributed to our understanding of this quintessential histone acetyltransferase. First, Jim Brownell and David Allis describe the discovery of Gcn5 [8], followed by Brittany Albaugh and John Denu who highlight key structural and catalytic attributes of Gcn5 as the defining member of the Gcn5-related N-acetyltransferase (GNAT) protein superfamily [15]. Next, Michael Sack and colleagues describe a protein that is closely related to Gcn5, Gcn5L1, which lacks intrinsic histone acetylation activity …

Low Frequency Absorption Enhancement By Modification Of Poro-Elastic Layered Sound Package, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton Nov 2020

Low Frequency Absorption Enhancement By Modification Of Poro-Elastic Layered Sound Package, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

For many years, industries have been searching for effective noise control solutions having cost effective features such as light weight and small volume. Conventional porous acoustical materials such as polymeric fibers, glass fibers and polyurethane foams fall into the category that meet most of these needs, but it is often said that these materials cannot provide effective absorption at low frequencies. Metamaterials or metasurfaces, on the other hand, have become popular recently due to their potential for nearly-perfect low frequency absorption performance. However, these materials still show obvious limitations regarding their implementation in industry due to their weight, volume, manufacturability …

Noise Control Concept Verification For A Ducted Fan System, Weimin Thor, J Stuart Bolton Nov 2020

Noise Control Concept Verification For A Ducted Fan System, Weimin Thor, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

The noise level of consumer products is a growing concern for manufacturers since customers’ product sound quality expectations are increasing. The product that motivated the present work was a “bladeless” fan in which the rotor and stator module were located in the base of the unit. Direct intensity measurements were used to characterize the fan’s acoustical output, which was found to radiate primarily from the air inlet beneath the rotor in the base unit. The noise control design concept explored here is based on the dipole characteristic of axial fans. It has been shown previously that when only one side …

Prediction Of Split In Fundamental Air-Cavity Mode Of Loaded Tires Based On Experimental Observations And Computational Simulations, Won Hong Choi, J Stuart Bolton Nov 2020

Prediction Of Split In Fundamental Air-Cavity Mode Of Loaded Tires Based On Experimental Observations And Computational Simulations, Won Hong Choi, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In previous studies, it was found that a tire’s fundamental air-cavity mode, typically near 200 Hz for current passenger car tires, splits into two features when the tire is loaded. Since the deformed tire is no longer geometrically symmetric, separate fore-aft and vertical modes appear, the former mode appearing at a slightly lower frequency than the vertical mode. These modes are key contributors to dynamic loads on the suspension system and consequently on cabin noise near 200 Hz. In this context, measurements of the dispersion relations for a set of loaded tires were performed to investigate the range of magnitudes …

Identification And Characterization Of Edible Cricket Peptides On Hypertensive And Glycemic In Vitro Inhibition And Their Anti-Inflammatory Activity On Raw 264.7 Macrophage Cells, Felicia Hall, Lavanya Reddivari, Andrea M. Liceaga Nov 2020

Liceaga

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Recent studies continue to demonstrate the potential of edible insects as a protein base to obtain bioactive peptides applicable for functional food development. This study aimed at identifying antihypertensive, anti-glycemic, and anti-inflammatory peptides derived from the in vitro gastrointestinal digests of cricket protein hydrolysates. After sequential fractionation, the protein digest subfraction containing the lowest molecular weight (<0.5 kDa), hydrophobic (C18) and cationic peptides (IEX) was found responsible for the most bioactivity. The cationic peptide fraction significantly reduced (p < 0.05) α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity in vitro, and also inhibited the expression of NF-κB in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. A total of 28 peptides were identified with mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) and de novo sequencing from the potent fraction. Three novel peptides YKPRP, PHGAP, and VGPPQ were chosen for the molecular docking studies. PHGAP and VGPPQ exhibited a higher degree of non-covalent interactions with the enzyme active site residues and binding energies comparable to captopril. Results from this study demonstrate the bioactive potential of edible cricket peptides, especially as ACE inhibitors.

Simulations And Experiments Reveal Effect Of Nanopores On Helium Diffusion In Quartz, Rustin Domingos, Marissa M. Tremblay, David L. Shuster, Burkhard Militzer Nov 2020

Simulations And Experiments Reveal Effect Of Nanopores On Helium Diffusion In Quartz, Rustin Domingos, Marissa M. Tremblay, David L. Shuster, Burkhard Militzer

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

The diffusion properties of noble gases in minerals are widely used to reconstruct the thermal histories of rocks. Here, we combine density functional theory (DFT) calculations with laboratory experiments to investigate controls on helium diffusion in quartz. DFT calculations for perfect α-quartz predict substantially lower activation energies and frequency factors for helium diffusion than observed in laboratory experiments, especially in the [001] direction. These results imply that no helium could be retained in quartz at Earth surface temperatures, which conflicts with observations of partial cosmogenic 3He retention over geologic time scales. Here, we implement a model of helium diffusion in …
