Comparative Study Of Exergetic And Economic Analysis Of Multi-Evaporator Nh3 And Nh3-Co2 Crs For A Seafood Processing Plant, Santosh Kumar Saini, M.S Dasgupta, Kristina N. Widdel, Souvik Bhattacharyya

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

In a seafood processing plant, refrigeration is a vital and energy intensive process. In India, NH3 is predominately used to cater to such refrigeration demands. These industrial refrigeration systems have the multi-evaporator configuration with high pressure ratios necessitating adoption of multistage compression. In recent years, owing to excellent and favorable thermo-physical properties of CO2 in low temperature, adoption of NH3-CO2 cascade refrigeration system (CRS) with NH3 in high temperature cycle is gaining worldwide acceptance. In the present work, performance of a conventional NH3 multistage industrial refrigeration system is compared with a proposed NH3-CO2 CRS system in terms of energy, exergy …

Low Melting Temperature Brazing Materials For Aluminum Heat Exchanger Fabrication, Hui Zhao, Stefan Elbel, Pega Hrnjak

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

The manufacturing of compact aluminum heat exchangers, such as microchannel heat exchangers, involves the controlled atmosphere brazing process. The joining of different parts, e.g., tube to header, tube to fin, is accomplished by molten brazing filler metal with the assistance of fluxes. The most commonly used brazing materials for aluminum heat exchangers are Al-Si alloys which offer many advantages, such as excellent wettability and material compatibility with the base materials. However, some limitations of the traditional Al-Si filler metals also exist: (1) very precise control of the brazing temperature is critical because of the small difference between the melting temperatures …

Investigation Of Two-Phase Refrigerant Behavior Upon Cycle Startup For Compressor Protection In Microgravity Applications, Paige E. Beck, Leon P. M. Brendel, James E. Braun, Eckhard A. Groll

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

Vapor compression cycles (VCCs) are a promising technology for refrigeration needs on future space craft due to their generally high cooling COP. However, due to microgravity there lies a risk of liquid flooding the compressor during start-up. Thus, to better prepare VCCs for microgravity applications, it is significant to understand the dependence of two-phase refrigerant on gravity during start-up. In this work, liquid flooding is evaluated at the start-up of a VCC and a possibility for passive compressor protection is considered. The experimental setup has two configurations. In the first, two-phase phenomena can be observed in a transparent tube and …

Characterization Of Maize Near-Isogenic Lines With Enhanced Flavonoid Expression To Be Used As Tools In Diet-Health Complexity, Binning Wu, Haotian Chang, Rich Marini, Surinder Chopra, Lavanya Reddivari

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Increasing incidence of chronic diseases in the 21st century has emphasized the importance of developing crops with enhanced nutritional value. Plant-based diets are associated with reduced incidence of many chronic diseases. The growing population and increased food demand have prioritized the development of high-yielding commercial crop varieties at the expense of natural flavors as well as health-benefiting compounds including polyphenols. Flavonoids are a large subfamily of polyphenols abundant in the plant kingdom with known health-promoting effects, making them a promising trait to be re-introduced into elite lines. Given the vast array of flavonoids and the complexity of plant food metabolome …

High concentrations of carotenoids are protective against cardiometabolic risk traits (CMTs) in adults and children. We recently showed in non-diabetic Mexican American (MA) children that serum α-carotene and β-carotene are inversely correlated with obesity measures and triglycerides and positively with HDL cholesterol and that they were under strong genetic influences. Additionally, we previously described a Pediatric Metabolic Index (PMI) that helps in the identification of children who are at risk for cardiometabolic diseases. Here, we quantified serum lycopene and β-cryptoxanthin concentrations in approximately 580 children from MA families using an ultraperformance liquid chromatography-photodiode array and determined their heritabilities and correlations …

Creating Awareness Of The Turkey Industry Through Stem-Based Online Curriculum, Elizabeth Simmermeyer, Elizabeth Karcher

Indiana STEM Education Conference

As the food industry has evolved over the years, consumers have more accessible and convenient outlets to buy groceries, dine in, or carry out. While there are many advantages to this ever-changing industry, a large gap exists in the understanding of food production from farm to fork. Consumer perceptions are influenced beginning at an early age. Education is the solution to bridge this gap between farm to fork; however, there are limited STEM-based agricultural resources available for teachers to implement in their classrooms. Creating these agricultural resources provides teachers the opportunity to share the story of the agricultural industry with …

Raising The Bar During Early Immunotherapy For Cancer: Simple Mathematical Models May Help Distinguish Temporary Vs. Ultimate Progression, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2021

Raising The Bar During Early Immunotherapy For Cancer: Simple Mathematical Models May Help Distinguish Temporary Vs. Ultimate Progression, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

Background: The apparent success of immunotherapy depends on the duration of follow up, sometimes with little evidence of efficacy during the first 4 to 8 months and often some degree of “pseudoprogression”. Differentiating transient pseudoprogression from true progression that would require a change in therapy can be challenging. The present study uses mathematical modeling and simulation to account for the unique kinetics and delayed clinical effects of immunotherapy and suggests improved approaches to predict efficacy and patient response from imaging studies. Methods: A mathematical model of tumor cell-immunocyte interaction is exercised to simulate a large number of individual patients and …

A Framework For Blue Energy Enabled Energy Storage In Reverse Osmosis Processes, Akshay Rao, Owen R. Li, Stephen M. Coan, George Elias, Sandra Cordoba, Michael Roggenberg, Luciano Castillo, David M. Warsinger Jan 2021

A Framework For Blue Energy Enabled Energy Storage In Reverse Osmosis Processes, Akshay Rao, Owen R. Li, Stephen M. Coan, George Elias, Sandra Cordoba, Michael Roggenberg, Luciano Castillo, David M. Warsinger

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Reverse osmosis (RO) is perhaps the most promising desalination technology, but it is facing growing economic challenges when coupled to an intermittent energy supply, such as renewable energy-based grids. A technology with similar components to reverse osmosis is pressure retarded osmosis (PRO), which produces energy from differences in salt concentration (blue energy). However, with the increasing cost-competitiveness of wind and solar photovoltaic renewable energy, PRO faces severe technoeconomic challenges as a stand-alone energy technology. To address cost and energy challenges of both RO and PRO, we propose a framework to intermittently operate RO with an instantaneous, electricity-producing PRO mode by …

Efficient Electrocatalysis For Denitrification By Using Tio2 Nanotube Arrays Cathode And Adding Chloride Ions, Yangyuan Ji, Junfeng Niu, Dong Xu, Kaixuan Wang, Jacob Brejcha, Seunghyo Jeon, David M. Warsinger

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Electrocatalysis is emerging as a promising alternative to bacterial denitrification for removing nitrate and ammonia from sewage. The technology is highly efficient and robust in actual wastewater treatment scenarios; however, there may be the generation of harmful intermediates (such as nitrite) on the traditional cathode material. In this study, we demonstrated that TiO2 nanotube arrays can be used as an effective cathode to reduce nitrate to ammonia without generation of nitrite. Alongside this, the addition of chloride ions in the solution can further oxidize ammonia to N2. We looked into the key factors influencing the electrocatalytic denitrification, including the current …

Implementation of an ejector for expansion work recovery in transcritical Carbon Dioxide (CO2) cycles provides an opportunity to improve the efficiency of these environmentally-friendly refrigeration systems. However, literature outlining an approach to ejector design for a given application is lacking. This paper presents a tool to design a complete ejector applied in a vapor compression cycle. In this work, the developed design tool was validated using experimentally-derived polynomials at air conditioning conditions, then efficiencies were input to broaden the analysis to study a transcritical CO2 system with an ejector operating in the evaporating temperature range of −15 °C to 20 …

Ocean waves provide a clean, reliable source of energy making them a viable energy source for desalination, especially in coastal communities and island nations. However, large capital costs render current wave-powered desalination technologies economically infeasible. This work presents a configuration for ocean-wave-energy-powered batch reverse osmosis. The proposed system uses seawater as the working fluid in a hydro-mechanical coupling and replaces the reverse osmosis high-pressure pump with a hydraulic converter for direct-drive, allowing for minimal intermediary power conversions, which leads to fewer parts necessary for operation and higher efficiencies. The concept was analyzed with MATLAB and Simulink to model the transient …

Effects Of Using Low Tunnel And Grafted Plants For Watermelon Production Under Low Temperature Stress In Indiana, Wenjing Guan Jan 2021

Effects Of Using Low Tunnel And Grafted Plants For Watermelon Production Under Low Temperature Stress In Indiana, Wenjing Guan

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

This study evaluated the effect of using low tunnel and grafted plants for early-season watermelon production in Indiana. Results of the study indicated that grafted seedless watermelon plants can better tolerate cold stress in the early watermelon season compared to non-grafted seedless watermelon plants. Grafted plants with ‘Camelforce’ rootstock had better old tolerance than that of ‘Carolina Strong Back’ rootstock. The effect of using low tunnels to improve plant survival rate under extreme weather conditions is limited, which depend on temperate stress and cold tolerance of the plants.

Fatigue Analysis Of A High-Performance Heat Exchanger, Mingkan Zhang, Patrick Geoghegan, Yoram Shabtay, James Tancabel, Jiazhen Ling, Vikrant Aute

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

Air-to-refrigerant heat exchangers (HX) are key components in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems. For such HXs, the air-side convective resistance is the dominant factor which limits the heat transfer performance. Using non-round shape-optimized tubes and headers can successfully solve the problem leading to high performance HXs. However, the non-round shape tubes and headers may cause some fatigue issues in practices causing the failure during use. Therefore, it is desired to conduct fatigue analysis of such HXs designs to seek designs which can provide both high performance and high strength simultaneously. In present work, a framework of fatigue …

Experimentally Observed Anomalies From Inclining A Vapor Compression Cycle, Leon P. M. Brendel, Stephen L. Caskey, James E. Braun, Eckhard A. Groll Jan 2021

Experimentally Observed Anomalies From Inclining A Vapor Compression Cycle, Leon P. M. Brendel, Stephen L. Caskey, James E. Braun, Eckhard A. Groll

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

Vapor compression cycles would have many applications in the space industry if it was not for the uncertainty imposed by microgravity environments on two-phase systems. A first step towards Zero-G for technologies involving fluid dynamics can be terrestrial testing at different orientations. For vapor compression cycles, there is very little literature describing this type of research. This paper describes the anomalies encountered during the pursuit of a continuous operation of a R134a vapor compression cycle while positioning it at fixed angles around one axis between 0 and 360°. Experimental data was collected on a dedicated test stand across two configurations, …

Maximizing The Effect Of Visual Feedback For Pronunciation Instruction: A Comparative Analysis Of Three Approaches, Daniel J. Olson, Heather M. Offerman Jan 2021

Maximizing The Effect Of Visual Feedback For Pronunciation Instruction: A Comparative Analysis Of Three Approaches, Daniel J. Olson, Heather M. Offerman

School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

Visual feedback, in which learners visually analyze acoustic speech characteristics, has been shown to significantly improve pronunciation, but extant research has varied widely with respect to the target feature, length of the intervention, and type of intervention. This study presents a comparative analysis of three methods of visual feedback for L2 segmental pronunciation instruction. These methods, all focused on training voice onset time for English-speaking learners of Spanish, differed in duration of instruction (i.e., short and long) and the nature of each intervention (i.e., phonemes presented simultaneously or sequentially). Results show that while all forms of visual feedback significantly improve …

Evaluating The Impact Of Vehicle Digital Communication Alerts On Vehicles, Rahul Suryakant Sakhare, Jairaj Desai, Jijo K. Mathew, Woosung Kim, Justin Mahlberg, Howell Li, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Technical Reports

Traditional methods for communicating the presence of maintenance activities and work zones have been done with a variety of fixed signs. The increase of in-vehicle connectivity on our roads—either directly integrated into the vehicle or via an application running on a mobile phone–provides an opportunity for additional communication to motorists about the presence of emergency vehicles, maintenance activities, or work zones. Although the exact form of the in-vehicle communication is evolving and will continue to do so, a critical first step is to leverage the extensive telematics currently deployed on the Indiana Department of Transportation Vehicles. The objective of this …

Self-Healing Cementitious Composites (Shcc) With Ultrahigh Ductility For Pavement And Bridge Construction, Cihang Huang, Yen-Fang Su, Na (Luna) Lu Jan 2021

Self-Healing Cementitious Composites (Shcc) With Ultrahigh Ductility For Pavement And Bridge Construction, Cihang Huang, Yen-Fang Su, Na (Luna) Lu

JTRP Technical Reports

Cracks and their formations in concrete structures have been a common and long-lived problem, mainly due to the intrinsic brittleness of the concrete. Concrete structures, such as rigid pavement and bridge decks, are prone to deformations and deteriorations caused by shrinkage, temperature fluctuation, and traffic load, which can affect their service life. Rehabilitation of concrete structures is expensive and challenging—not only from maintenance viewpoints but also because they cannot be used for services during maintenance. It is critical to significantly improve the ductility of concrete to overcome such issues and to enable better infrastructure quality. To this end, the self-healing …
