Optimization Of Permeable Membrane Microchannel Heat Sinks For Additive Manufacturing, S. Ozguc, L. Pan, J.A. Weibel
Optimization Of Permeable Membrane Microchannel Heat Sinks For Additive Manufacturing, S. Ozguc, L. Pan, J.A. Weibel
CTRC Research Publications
The design freedom brought by additive manufacturing (AM) can be leveraged in the design of microchannel heat sinks to improve their cooling performance. The permeable membrane microchannel (PMM) heat sink geometry was inspired by the ability of powder bed AM processes to fabricate partially porous metal parts having small internal flow features on the order of the powder size. The design routes coolant through a parallel array of thin permeable membranes arranged in a single-layer-manifold configuration. The permeable membranes provide effective heat exchange surfaces and the manifold configuration yields a low flow resistance across the PMM heat sink, all incorporated …

The Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) is a widely administered measure of classroom quality that assesses teacher-child interactions in the domains of Emotional Support, Classroom Organization, and Instructional Support. We use data from an evaluation of state-funded prekindergarten provided to 684 children from families with low incomes (Mage = 57.56 months, 48% female) to examine the extent to which CLASS scores vary over the course of an observational period within a single day and investigate whether this variability is related to children’s school readiness at the end of the preschool year, holding constant two additional measures of quality. Teacher-child interactions …

Moving Towards Accurate And Early Prediction Of Language Delay With Network Science And Machine Learning Approaches, Arielle Borovsky, Donna Thal, Laurence B. Leonard
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Due to wide variability of typical language development, it has been historically difficult to distinguish typical and delayed trajectories of early language growth. Improving our understanding of factors that signal language disorder and delay has the potential to improve the lives of the millions with developmental language disorder (DLD). We develop predictive models of low language (LL) outcomes by analyzing parental report measures of early language skill using machine learning and network science approaches. We harmonized two longitudinal datasets including demographic and standardized measures of early language skills (the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Developmental Inventories; MBCDI) as well as a later measure …

Background
Many children with developmental language disorders (DLD) have well-documented weaknesses in vocabulary. In recent years, investigators have explored the nature of these weaknesses through the use of novel word learning paradigms. These studies have begun to uncover specific areas of difficulty and have provided hints about possible intervention strategies that might help these children learn words more accurately and efficiently. Among the studies of this type are those that incorporate repeated spaced retrieval activities in the learning procedures.
Methods
In this study, we examined the data from four of these studies that employed the same types of participants (4- …

Simulating The Acquisition Of Verb Inflection In Typically Developing Children And Children With Developmental Language Disorder In English And Spanish, Daniel Freudenthal, Michael Ramscar, Laurence B. Leonard, Julian M. Pine
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) have significant deficits in language ability that cannot be attributed to neurological damage, hearing impairment, or intellectual disability. The symptoms displayed by children with DLD differ across languages. In English, DLD is often marked by severe difficulties acquiring verb inflection. Such difficulties are less apparent in languages with rich verb morphology like Spanish and Italian. Here we show how these differential profiles can be understood in terms of an interaction between properties of the input language, and the child's ability to learn predictive relations between linguistic elements that are separated within a sentence. We …

Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Trajectories For Appropriating Engineering Design–Based Science Teaching, Brenda Capobianco, Jeffrey Radloff
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Learning to teach science using engineering design is a complex endeavor for elementary preservice teachers (PSTs). This entails helping PSTs understand students as sense makers and recognizing ways to notice, respond, and leverage their students’ ideas throughout the design process. In this study, we follow a cohort of elementary PSTs through a 16-week method course including a related field experience in a local STEM intermediate school (grades 5–6) to better understand how they organize, plan for, and attempt to integrate engineering design–based science teaching. Data were gathered through interviews, lesson plans, reflective narratives, and classroom observations. Data were analyzed using …

Facilitating Preservice Elementary Science Teachers’ Shift From Learner To Teacher Of Engineering Design-Based Science Teaching, Brenda Capobianco, Jeffrey Radloff, Jenna Clingerman
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
The role of engineering in science and mathematics education continues to emerge as a contributing factor to improving STEM education. Efforts across different countries include the integration of engineering in K-12 curriculum, after school programs, and inservice teacher professional development. Only recently have science teacher educators begun to introduce engineering in science teacher preparation programs. By incorporating novel curriculum and design-related experiences, we can begin to explore how preservice teachers not only learn about engineering, but more importantly, learn how to teach science using engineering design. In this study, we explore different ways 45 elementary preservice science teachers characterize and …

Examining The Factor Structure And Validity Of The Triarchic Model Of Psychopathy Across Measures, Katherine L. Collison, Joshua D. Miller, Donald R. Lynam
Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications
The triarchic model of psychopathy proposes 3 distinct trait domains underlying psychopathy: boldness, meanness, and disinhibition. The original (and most widely used) measure developed from this model is the Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM), which yields a total psychopathy score as well as scores on each of the 3 domains. Recently, researchers have derived several alternative measures from other inventories to assess these 3 domains; however, the purported underlying 3-factor structure of the alternative scales has been relatively untested. In the present study, 431 participants completed the TriPM and its alternative measures via Amazon Mechanical Turk, and items within the scales …

Dynamic Simulations Of An Absorption System With Different Working Pairs At Chiller And Heat Pump Application, Jian Zheng, Jesús Castro, Carles Oliet
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
This work describes the dynamic simulation of a direct air-cooled single effect solar-driven absorption system and demonstrates the numerical results of the absorption system with different working pairs. The working pairs used in the chiller mode are LiBr-H2O and Carrol-H2O (Carrol contains LiBr and EG -Ethylene glycol-with a mass ratio at 4.5:1), while in the heat pump mode, EG is introduced in the evaporator to avoid freezing problem which limits the operation condition. The numerical modelling was implemented on a modular object-oriented simulation platform (NEST platform tool), which allows the linking between different components, considered as objects, which can be …

Analysis Of Dynamic Heat Transfer Coefficient In A Reciprocating Compressor By Immersed Solid Method In Cfd, Rakesh Eettisseri, Marcelo Real, Sidnei Oliveira
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Accurate mapping of heat transfer inside the Hermetic compressor has been a major challenge for the designing and evaluation of performance. Various methodologies have been adopted for the thermal mapping such as experimental analysis, numerical methods, CFD etc. Mapping is further complex when the motions of multiple components are considered. In this work heat transfer is mapped inside a reciprocating hermetic compressor by considering the rotation of crankshaft and associated motion of connecting rod and piston. The refrigerant gas and oil in the sump are used as the working fluids for this conjugate heat transfer model. The motion is imposed …

An Analytical Tool To Determine The Optimum Counterweights For Multi-Cylinder Reciprocating Compressors, Salih Güvenç Uslu, Kaan Şengül
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The industrial air compressor market has been growing fast, thereby compelling the manufacturers to produce competitive products with less vibration and noise, which also better meet the customers’ expectations and related regulations. Both mechanical and hydrodynamical factors induce vibrations which have substantial negative effects in the maintenance periods and the lifetime of certain components. This study focuses on the balancing of the crankshaft by modifying the geometry of the counterweights. It aims at reducing the overall vibration of a compressor with the outputs of an analytical model which investigates the dynamics of the crankshaft of a W-type reciprocating compressor. The …
Thermodynamic Investigation And Design Concept Of A Bi-Directional Wankel Machine For Compression And Expansion In Natural Gas Storage And Distribution Applications, Thomas Werner Moesch, Konrad Klotsche, Gotthard Will, Christiane Thomas, Ullrich Hesse
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The distribution and storage of natural gas is based on different pressure levels. The pressure is increased by process gas compressors and currently reduced by throttling valves. The isenthalpic throttling leads to exergy losses. As part of an industry project the TU Dresden and the IME Aachen GmbH developed a bi-directional Wankel machine that may be used for both compression and expansion and thus recover some of the exergy losses. The Wankel machine uses rotary valves for suction and discharge control with fixed opening and closing angles in regards to the displacer rotation. This study shows the detailed design concept …

Characterizing Steady State Compressor Performance By Using Transient Test Data, Leon P. M. Brendel, Stephen L. Caskey, James E. Braun, Eckhard A. Groll
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Compressor testing is an essential task to characterize compressor performance, but often requires significant time to be executed. This study suggests a method that could greatly reduce time needed for compressor testing by inferring steady state performance from transient data rather than waiting for true steady state conditions to be measured. The key finding is that the overall isentropic efficiency in transient operation is almost identical to its true steady state performance value after applying very simple data processing. The paper describes a simple data processing method that extracts steady-state performance from transient data. The proposed processing should not be …

Pathways To Decarbonization Of Residential Heating, Alex Fridlyand, Paul Glanville, Michael Garrabrant
Pathways To Decarbonization Of Residential Heating, Alex Fridlyand, Paul Glanville, Michael Garrabrant
International High Performance Buildings Conference
Space and water heating are the largest consumers of energy in residential buildings, up to 85% in cold climates. In addition to conservation measures, improving the building thermal envelope and optimizing the heat and hot water distribution, improving the performance of the heating technology is critical to provide a pathway to significantly reduce carbon emissions, with a focus on existing buildings. Conventional fuel-fired heating systems that use existing infrastructure have approached their thermodynamic limit over the past 15-20 years. While the performance of electrically-driven heat pumps, that would use electricity produced at the margin in a fuel-switching scenario, have improved, …

Ultra-White Baso4 Paint And Film With Remarkable Radiative Cooling Performance, X. Li, J. Peoples, P. Y. Yao, X. Ruan
CTRC Research Publications
Radiative cooling is a passive cooling technology that offers great promises to reduce space cooling cost, combat the urban island effect, and alleviate the global warming. To achieve passive daytime radiative cooling, current state-of-the-art solutions often utilize complicated multilayer structures or a reflective metal layer, limiting their applications in many fields. Attempts have been made to achieve passive daytime radiative cooling with single-layer paints, but they often require a thick coating or show partial daytime cooling. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate remarkable full-daytime subambient cooling performance with both BaSO4 nanoparticle films and BaSO4 nanocomposite paints. BaSO4 has a high …

The Effect Of Uneven Heating On The Flow Distribution Between Parallel Microchannels Undergoing Boiling, A. Miglani, A. Soto, J.A. Weibel, S.V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
As the size, weight, and performance requirements of electronic devices grow increasingly demanding, their packaging has become more compact. As a result of thinning or removing the intermediate heat spreading layers, non-uniform heat generation from the chip-scale and component-level variations may be imposed directly on the attached microchannel heat sink. Despite the important heat transfer performance implications, the effect of uneven heating on the flow distribution in parallel microchannels undergoing boiling has been largely unexplored. In this study, a two-phase flow distribution model is used to investigate the impact of uneven heating on the flow distribution behavior of parallel microchannels …
