In any industry or organization, personnel training is emphasized with reference to National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) guidelines and other globally accepted guidelines. In spite of many refresher training programs, the pharmaceutical industry still faces significant variations in individual/ team efficiency and productivity. Individuals/teams given the same task, SOPs, environment and materials continue to produce significantly different results reflecting the possibility of operating on different sets of theoretical and practical information, which may stem from differing trainer, training program or training method. This study focused on using a standardized manual for training two teams A and B involved in vaccine production, …

2021 Cantaloupe Variety Evaluation In Indiana, Wenjing Guan, Dan Egel, Dennis Nowaskie, Dean Haseman

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

Indiana ranks sixth in cantaloupe production in the US. A total of 1,800 acres of cantaloupes were planted in Indiana with a production value of $8.6 million in 2018 (USDA 2021). Melon produced in Indiana is primarily eastern-type cantaloupes. Traditional eastern-type cantaloupes have less pronounced netting, larger fruit size, softer flesh and shorter shelf life compared with western-type cantaloupes. They are harvested at quarter-slip to full-slip stage, and require frequent harvest. Recently, extended shelf life varieties have been developed and are becoming attractive in the eastern market. This variety trial included 11 traditional eastern-type cantaloupes, as well as extended shelf-life …

Frames For Justice Consciousness, Colin M. Gray, Rua M. Williams, Paul Parsons, Austin L. Toombs, Abbee Westbrook

Computer Graphics Technology Open Educational Resources

We describe how UX design students become aware of citizen-engaged design work, and indicate the extent to which a progression toward social justice-focused design work might be possible in a single project cycle. Our study site is a sophomore-level UX design studio at a large Midwestern US university—part of a five-semester sequence in which students engage in a range of projects that address competence in user research, prototyping, and evaluation. The project cycle we focus on directly challenges the apolitical framing in most foundational UX methods literature, explicitly asking students to engage with issues of power disparities. We analyzed …

Enhancing Preservice Teachers’ Intention To Integrate Engineering Through A Cross-Disciplinary Model, Francisco Cima, Pilar Pazos, Jennifer Kidd, Kristie Gutierrez, Stacie Ringleb, Orlando Ayala, Krishnanand Kaipa

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Although elementary educators recognize the importance of integrating engineering in their classrooms, many feel challenged and unprepared to teach engineering content. The absence of effective engineering instruction in teacher preparation programs leaves future educators unprepared for this challenge. Ed+gineering is an NSF-funded cross-disciplinary model between education and engineering aimed at increasing preservice teachers’ preparation, confidence, and intention to integrate engineering into their teaching. Ed+gineering partners education and engineering students in cross-disciplinary teams within the context of their respective university courses. As part of their coursework, the teams plan and deliver culturally responsive engineering lessons to elementary school students under the …

John Dewey And Global Citizenship Education: Beyond American And Postcolonial Nationalism In An Age Of Cultural Hybridity, Hyunju Lee Oct 2021

John Dewey And Global Citizenship Education: Beyond American And Postcolonial Nationalism In An Age Of Cultural Hybridity, Hyunju Lee

Education and Culture

John Dewey acknowledges that nationalism contributed not only to the establishment of the modern nation of the United States and its national unity, but also to the independence of other colonized countries in the twentieth century. At the same time, he is also concerned with the detrimental effects of nationalism on individual agency and association. This paper sheds light on the dual nature of nationalism in both American and postcolonial contexts. Based on a transnational dialogue, it argues that Deweyan democracy provides a meaningful foundation of citizenship education, which replaces nationalism in today’s globalization that entails increasing cultural hybridity.

Dewey, Hippie Communes, And Education, Luis S. Villacañas De Castro Oct 2021

Dewey, Hippie Communes, And Education, Luis S. Villacañas De Castro

Education and Culture

In this article I aim to establish a relevant connection between John Dewey’s educational philosophy and the hippie communes of the United States during the nineteen sixties and seventies. After an assessment of Dewey’s philosophy against the background of the countercultural sixties, I summarize and organize Dewey’s philosophical thought around the concepts of growth, experience, education, democracy, and occupations. I then look closely at seven memoirs describing life in five different hippie communes, and draw on them to present illustrations of the main tenets of Dewey’s educational philosophy and of its contemporary significance.

Classroom Exchanges: Big Data And The Commodification Of Educational Communication, Nicholas J. Eastman, Ethan E. Hansen Oct 2021

Classroom Exchanges: Big Data And The Commodification Of Educational Communication, Nicholas J. Eastman, Ethan E. Hansen

Education and Culture

We contrast the centrality of free and full communication, especially as it occurs in classrooms, for John Dewey’s democratic vision of the Great Community with the technologically mediated classroom communication characteristic of the COVID-19 pandemic. We focus on Google’s dominance of educational communication in particular. Drawing on Shoshana Zuboff’s concept of rendition, we argue that Google’s interest in and influence over educational communication is rooted in behavioral data analytics that captures and exploits classroom language (spoken, written, and bodily) for capitalist accumulation and social control. We conclude that Dewey’s theories of language and communication are descriptively powerful regarding the commodification …

Dewey On Devices: Exploring The Role Of Edtech In A Critical Pragmatist Education, Morgan Anderson Oct 2021

Dewey On Devices: Exploring The Role Of Edtech In A Critical Pragmatist Education, Morgan Anderson

Education and Culture

While questions surrounding the relationship between education and technology have captured the attention of philosophers of education in recent decades, such concerns have taken on new import. Particularly in the post COVID-19 educational landscape, EdTech has become bound up with power and ideology in ways that warrant ongoing scrutiny. Building upon the work of scholars who have shown that pragmatism can be sufficiently attentive to issues of power, I explore how a Deweyan critical pragmatism offers opportunities for philosophers of education to engage in normative debates surrounding the relationship between education and technology in the digital age.

Data-Driven Decision Making And Dewey’S Science Of Education, Natalie Schelling, Lance E. Mason Oct 2021

Data-Driven Decision Making And Dewey’S Science Of Education, Natalie Schelling, Lance E. Mason

Education and Culture

This paper considers elementary teachers’ perceptions of data-driven decision making (DDDM) through the lens of Dewey’s science of education. Dewey argues that educational science can be used to improve teaching and learning, but it must be flexible, attendant to multiple dimensions of growth, and grounded in real classroom experiences with teachers at the helm. Results indicate that teachers have a vision of classroom assessments consistent with Dewey’s vision, but often feel inhibited by the constraints of standardized assessments.

From Widgets To Wizards: Pedagogy For The Scoreboard Society, Bob Coulter Oct 2021

From Widgets To Wizards: Pedagogy For The Scoreboard Society, Bob Coulter

Education and Culture

Many schools today are driven by metrics intended to quantify student achievement, ostensibly in the interest of ensuring quality and accountability in public schools. In practice, this emphasis on performance over experience narrows schools’ potential to foster student growth toward democratic citizenship. This article offers a constructive alternative that fuses classical pragmatic foundations with emerging research in extended cognition, neuroplasticity, and epigenetics.

Data Without Democracy: The Cruel Optimism Of Education Technology And Assessment, Mark D. Tschaepe Oct 2021

Data Without Democracy: The Cruel Optimism Of Education Technology And Assessment, Mark D. Tschaepe

Education and Culture

This essay examines contemporary digital educational assessment and argues that there are underlying problematic values and consequences entailed by the datafication of education as coupled with assessment practices. By applying Dewey’s work concerning curriculum, aims, growth, and the conception of democracy through education to current methods, this examination exposes digital assessment as perpetuating a cruel optimism through assessment that undermines democratic, progressive functions of education. Dewey’s philosophy provides a perspective from which to repurpose digital tools in a manner that fosters, rather than hinders, aims, growth, and democracy in education.

On The Struggles And Experiences Of Southeast Asian American Academics, Long T. Bui Oct 2021

On The Struggles And Experiences Of Southeast Asian American Academics, Long T. Bui

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This article examines Southeast Asian Americans (SEAA) academics in the U.S. academy, relating their complex positionalities within higher education to their communities and societies. While many educational studies have been done on SEAA students, almost none focus on professional scholars and college faculty. Combining cultural-structural critique with close analysis of public writings and personal interviews, the article finds that that SEAA are ignored, and/or tokenized in the Ivory Tower due to structural as well as epistemological issues. It indicates that the public discourse and policies about Southeast Asians in academia not only neglects racial and class hierarchies, but obscures issues …

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

In the present study, we examined the extent to which teacher-rated self-regulation and directly assessed executive function skills were independently, additively, or synergistically related to academic achievement during the transition to kindergarten. The sample included 126 children (42% female; Mage = 4.73 years) from families with low incomes who participated in a larger evaluation of state-funded preschool. Regression models with children nested in their respective preschool classrooms investigated main effects and moderated effects of teacher-rated self-regulation skills manifested in preschool classroom behaviors and cognitive executive function skills assessed through direct assessments on math, literacy, and vocabulary in the spring of …
