An introduction to coding theory and a discussion of specific coding techniques are given as applied to digital communication systems. The place of coding in a communication system is illustrated and the various approaches to coding are discussed. The information theory concepts required are presented along with the First and Second Fundamental Theorems of Shannon, The relation between Shannon’s theorems and coding for the noisy and noiseless channel is discussed. For the noiseless channel the techniques of Shannon, Fano, Huffman, Gilbert-More, Karp and others are discussed. The most widely used methods of signal representation are the time function and the frequency function or spectrum representations. This work is concerned with the development of a representation which is a combination of these two. Two previous attempts at defining this type of signal representation, which is referred to as two dimensional representation, have been made and a summary and evaluation of these attempts is presented. The primary objective of the work reported here was to develop a practical two dimensional representation which has the desired two dimensional conceptual properties as well as mathematical convenience. This report considers the problem of the calculation of the distribution function of the output of a linear filter with a random square—wave input. The systems considered are the finite-time integrator, the RC low- pass filter, and certain restricted higher-order filters. The inputs are square-waves in which the lengths of axis-crossing intervals are random, but statistically independent. For the finite-time integrator with a coin-toss square-wave input, a difference equation for the characteristic function of the output is derived and solved. The continuity and differentiability properties of the distribution function of the output of an RC low—pass filter are discussed. Under …

This report investigates the stability of autonomous closed-loop control systems containing nonlinear elements. An n-th order nonlinear autonomous system is described by a set of n first order differential equations of the type dxi/dt=xi(x1, x2, …xn) i=1,2,…n. Liapunov's second (direct) method is used in the stability analysis of such systems. This method enables one to prove that a system is stable (or unstable) if a function V=V (x1, x2, … xn) can be found which, together with its time derivative, satisfies the requirements of Liapunov's stability (or instability) theorems.
