Multispectral Data Compression Through Transform Coding And Block Quantization, P. J. Ready, P. A. Wintz Jan 1972

Multispectral Data Compression Through Transform Coding And Block Quantization, P. J. Ready, P. A. Wintz

LARS Technical Reports

Transform coding and block quantization techniques are applied to multispectral data for data compression purposes. Two types of multispectral data are considered, (1) aircraft scanner data, and (2) digitized satellite imagery. The multispectral source is defined and an appropriate mathematical model proposed.

Two error criteria are used to evaluate the performance of the transform encoder. The first is the mean square error between the original and reconstructed data sets. The second is the performance of a computer implemented classification algorithm over the reconstructed data set. The total mean square error for the multispectral vector source is shown to be the …

Automatic Classifications Of Soils And Vegetation With Erts-1 Data, David Landgrebe Jan 1972

Automatic Classifications Of Soils And Vegetation With Erts-1 Data, David Landgrebe

LARS Technical Reports

ERTS-A was successfully launched to become ERTS-1 on July 23, 1972. This was an historic event, though only a beginning, for it climaxed a long effort by many people to conceive, design, and bring in to being such a data - gathering instrument. In parallel with this effort research had been under way to find methods to analyze data from such an instrument. One part of this latter effort was a search for ways to analyze such data by computing machine. These would be needed for problems requiring very rapid analysis or high data throughput, or both. It was only …

Mapping Of Soils And Geologic Features With Data From Satellite-Borne Multispectral Scanners, M. F. Baumgardner, S. J. Kristof, W. N. Melhorn

LARS Technical Reports

The ERTS-1 satellite provides opportunity for quick inventory and assessment of geologic, soils, and vegetative cover aspects of large-scale areas of the Earth's surface. Collin County, Texas, U.S.A., a 2270 Km² area of relatively simple geology and soil associations was chosen for initial study, using ERTS-1 4-channel multispectral scanner data. These data were analyzed by computer-implemented pattern recognition techniques developed at the Purdue University Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing (LARS). The results indicate excellent visual correlation, on a gross scale, between automatically produced maps and existing geologic and soils maps and field information.

Determining Density Of Maize Canopy: Ii. Airborne Multispectral Scanner Data, E. R. Stoner, M. F. Baumgardner, J. E. Cipra

LARS Technical Reports

Multispectral scanner data were collected in two flights over a light colored soil background cover plot at an altitude of 305 m. Energy in eleven reflective wavelength bands from 0.45 to 2.6 µm was recorded by the scanner. Four growth stages of maize (Zea mays L.) were present at the time of each over flight, giving a wide range of canopy densities for each flight date. Leaf area index measurements were taken from twelve subplots at the time of each overflight, and were used as a measure of canopy density.

Ratio techniques were used to relate uncalibrated scanner response to …

Data Processing Ii: Advancements In Large-Scale Data Processing Systems For Remote Sensing, David Landgrebe

LARS Technical Reports

In the preceding paper, Dr. Swain described some of the research activities in Data Analysis techniques carried out at LARS/Purdue this past year. This paper continues by summarizing some results obtained from additional data processing research tasks now under study there. Time and space do not permit details. Full descriptions of these projects are reported in LARS reports and in papers in the open literature.

These studies fall into three categories: (1) an examination of the suitability of several sensor types with regard to producing data required for multispectral machine analysis; (2) various types of data preprocessing necessary to prepare …

Light Ray Tracing Through A Leaf Cross Section, R. Kumar, L. Silva Jan 1972

Light Ray Tracing Through A Leaf Cross Section, R. Kumar, L. Silva

LARS Technical Reports

A light ray, incident at about 5° to the normal, is geometrically plotted through the drawing of the cross section of a soybean leaf wing Fresnel's Equations and Snell's Law. The optical mediums of the leaf considered for ray tracing are: air, cell sap, chloroplast and cell wall. The above ray is also drawn through the same leaf cross section considering cell wall and air as the only optical mediums. The values of the reflection and transmission found from ray tracing agree closely with the experimental results obtained using a Beckman DK-2A Spectroreflectometer.

Multispectral Determination Of Vegetative Cover In Corn Crop Canopies, E. R. Stoner, M. F. Baumgardner

LARS Technical Reports

This research was designed to study the relationship between different amounts of vegetative ground cover and the energy reflected by corn canopies. Low altitude photography and an airborne multispectral scanner were used to measure this reflected energy.

Notes Of Image Correlation And Registration System Improvements, Stanton Yao Jan 1972

Notes Of Image Correlation And Registration System Improvements, Stanton Yao

LARS Technical Reports

Investigation has been conducted into means of improving the image correlator and overlay function portions of the LARS image registration system. The fast Fourier transform correlator was analysed in detail and a modified version was programmed and tested. More reliable and accurate correlation has been achieved on both multispectral and multitemporal scanner imagery and Apollo 9 digitised multispectral photography. A quadratic overlay function was developed which uses local correlation checkpoints to interpolate the required overlay shifts between checkpoints. these improvements are described in the memo. The modified correlator is checked out and ready for inclusion in the registration system. More …

Application Of Multispectral Remote Sensing To Soil Survey Research In Indiana, A. L. Zachary, J. E. Cipra, R. I. Diderickson, S. J. Kristof, M. F. Baumgardner

LARS Technical Reports

Recent advances have been made in the technology of measuring radiance from the earth's surface using multiple-wavelength airborne scanning spectrometers. Concurrently, advances were being made in the application of computer-implemented pattern recognition techniques to these multispectral data. Together these two tools have resulted in a capability for napping various earth surface features with extreme rapidity and varying degrees of accuracy. This study compared computer-implemented mappings based on spectral properties of bare soil surfaces with mapping units of interest to soil surveyors. Some soil types could be differentiated by their spectral properties. In other cases, soils with similar surface colors and …

Pattern Recognition: A Basis For Remote Sensing Data Analysis, Philip H. Swain Jan 1972

Pattern Recognition: A Basis For Remote Sensing Data Analysis, Philip H. Swain

LARS Technical Reports

Pattern recognition plays a central role in numerically oriented remote sensing systems. It provides an automatic procedure for deciding to which class any given ground resolution element should be assigned. The assignment is made in such a manner that on the average correct classification is achieved.

This information note describes briefly the theoretical basis for the pattern-recognition-oriented algorithms used in LARSYS, the multispectral data analysis software system developed by the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing (LARS).

LARS Technical Reports

The measurements program at LARS/Purdue has been concerned with five basic research areas during 1971. These areas are (1) the influence of haze layers upon remotely sensed surface properties, (2) electrical methods of soil moisture measurement, (3) thermographic studies of vegetation under nutritional stress, (4) improved field spectroradiometry, and (5) biological spectrophotometry.

All of the projects have risen out of problems generated from the overall laboratory mission. the emphasis in the paper is on instrumentation and techniques; whereas, related data and results on specific projects will be reported elsewhere. Each of the subject areas will be discussed individually.

Agricultural And Forest Resource Surveys From Space, Roger M. Hoffer Jan 1972

Agricultural And Forest Resource Surveys From Space, Roger M. Hoffer

LARS Technical Reports

The efficient and effective management of the natural and cultural resources of any country requires accurate and up-to-date information concerning these resources. People involved in the management of agricultural and forest resources at the local level, as well as in various government agencies, often have particularly urgent needs for timely, reliable information concerning the extent, condition, and potential yields of these resources.

Although aerial photography has been in use for many years and for a multitude of purposes, it has only been in the past decade or so that agriculturists and foresters have been seriously researching the potentials of color …

Influence Of Haze Layers Upon Remotely-Sensed Surface Properties, G. M. Jurica, W. L. Murray

LARS Technical Reports

During the summer of 1971 the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing (LARS) participated in an experiment to detect disease in corn caused by southern corn leaf blight. An aircraft was used to measure in several spectral intervals between 0.46 and 2.60 micrometers the solar radiation reflected by the earth's surface. The analysis of data gathered during the 1971 Corn Blight Watch Experiment revealed a number of unexpected features. One of particular interest was the appearance of bright and dark sides along the flightline of the aircraft.
