Atmospheric Effects On Radiation Measurements, G. M. Jurica Jan 1973

Atmospheric Effects On Radiation Measurements, G. M. Jurica

LARS Technical Reports

Already during this course you have heard occasional references to the effect of the atmosphere upon radiation measurements obtained by remote sensing techniques. Usually the indication was that in some way the atmosphere acted to limit the quantity and quality of information available to the measuring system.

In certain respects this is a quite valid assessment of atmospheric processes. In fact, it is possible to envision the atmosphere as performing a dual role: 1) by acting as a generator it can introduce a spurious signal into the measured quantities, and 2) by acting as an unwanted filter the atmosphere can …

Analysis Research For Earth Resource Information Systems: Where Do We Stand?, David A. Landgrebe Jan 1973

Analysis Research For Earth Resource Information Systems: Where Do We Stand?, David A. Landgrebe

LARS Technical Reports

For a decade or more research has been conducted which is intended to lead to the design of operational earth resource information systems. Clearly this research has not yet been completed. It does seem to be far enough along however, that an assessment relevant to future operational activities might well be possible and beneficial. In this paper a model operational system will be discussed not so much as a proposal for an actual system, but merely as a viable objective upon which to focus the research. Possible system configurations and constraints will be noted, and the trend in the cost …

Applications Of Erts-1 Imagery To Mapping Of Lineaments Favorable To The Localization Of Ore Deposits In North Central Nevada, D. W. Levandowski, T. V. Jennings, W. T. Lehman Jan 1973

Applications Of Erts-1 Imagery To Mapping Of Lineaments Favorable To The Localization Of Ore Deposits In North Central Nevada, D. W. Levandowski, T. V. Jennings, W. T. Lehman

LARS Technical Reports

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the value of ERTS-1 data as a supplement to mineral reconnaissance techniques. Field studies have revealed that the major mining districts in Lander and Eureka counties, Nevada, tend to be aligned in northwest-southeast belts with ore deposits occurring in carbonates which have been exposed by domal windows through the upper plate of the Roberts Mountain thrust.

Analyses of composite color images of ERTS-1 data obtained from a digital image-editing system indicated that many of the ore districts are related to lineaments not previously mapped either by aerial or field studies. These lineaments …

Urban Land Use Monitoring From Computer-Implemented Processing Of Airborne Multispectral Sensor Data, William J. Todd, Paul W. Mausel, Marion F. Baumgardner Jan 1973

Urban Land Use Monitoring From Computer-Implemented Processing Of Airborne Multispectral Sensor Data, William J. Todd, Paul W. Mausel, Marion F. Baumgardner

LARS Technical Reports

A significant portion of the budget of every city and county planning agency is allocated to the collection of land use data. A planning agency must have information pertinent to a variety of users. Often these information systems are costly, require many people, and are slow.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the alternative of using computer-implemented analysis of airborne multispectral scanner data to monitor urban land use. This monitoring should require a limited amount of human intervention. Computer-generated results from multispectral data can be ready for city and county officials to use within 24 hours after the …

Sun Angle Effect Preprocessing With Predicted Ramp Functions, David F. Strahorn, Paul E. Anuta Jan 1973

Sun Angle Effect Preprocessing With Predicted Ramp Functions, David F. Strahorn, Paul E. Anuta

LARS Technical Reports

Among the many factors affecting the LARS multispectral scanner data is the geometric interaction of the sensor look angle and solar illumination angle. One of these interactions is quite well known to many LARS researchers as the "sun-angle" effect to some and solar ramping or just ramping to others. Ramping is the in mean scanner response as a function of scanner look angle for a given data set; or, the change in column mean from column to column for a given run.

Remote Sensing, Computers, And Land Use Planning, Harry C. Hitchcock

LARS Technical Reports

During the past decade, increased emphasis has been placed on land use planning at state, regional and national levels. A thorough knowledge of present land use is prerequisite to planning future land use. In other words land use inventory or classification is a primary stage in comprehensive planning at all levels.

An Evaluation Of Machine Processing Techniques Of Erts-1 Data For User Applications, David Landgrebe Jan 1973

An Evaluation Of Machine Processing Techniques Of Erts-1 Data For User Applications, David Landgrebe

LARS Technical Reports

For some years research has been underway to learn how to use computing machines for the processing and analysis of remotely sensed data. The motivation of this work is not to produce an automatic analysis system, but to utilize computing machinery for the repetitive and routine aspects of the total analysis and processing problem in order to minimize the costs and increase the throughput rate.

Adp Of Multispectral Scanner Data For Land Use Mapping, Roger M. Hoffer Jan 1973

Adp Of Multispectral Scanner Data For Land Use Mapping, Roger M. Hoffer

LARS Technical Reports

The need has long existed for a capability to obtain reliable information over large geographic areas in a timely manner. Such a need is present in many discipline areas. The past few years have seen a marked increase in the awareness of our needs for accurate land use planning, and the accompanying realization that our existing capability to obtain accurate and up-to-date land use information is not adequate to meet society's current and future needs. Because of the very rapid changes in the condition of agricultural crops and the influence of crop yield predictions on the world market, the need …

Machine Processing Methods For Earth Observational Data, D. A. Landgrebe, F. C. Billingsley, J. D. Nichols

LARS Technical Reports

A brief review of the development over the last decade of earth resource informations systems is presented. Machine data preprocessing and analysis methods are surveyed and illustrated. These include preprocessing steps intended to modify geometric and radiometric aspects of earth observational image data to enhance the ability of either human interpreters or machine algorithms to extract information from data. Illustrations of processed and analyzed images from spaceborne sensors including the Earth Resources Technology Satellite are discussed.

Mapping Soil Associations Using Erts Mss Data, J. E. Cipra Jan 1973

Mapping Soil Associations Using Erts Mss Data, J. E. Cipra

LARS Technical Reports

Multispectral imagery from ERTS was compared to a soil association map of Tippecanoe County, Indiana, based on a conventional field survey. Three methods of processing single and multiple wavelength bands were applied to imagery collected on three dates. Correction of geometric distortions in computer-processed imagery was investigated. Four to six groupings of soil associations could be delineated on ERTS imagery. Some associations were more readily delineated using visible wavelengths, some more readily delineated using infrared wavelengths. In general, MSS band 7 was found to give more soils information than MSS band 5. Imagery of single wavelength bands displayed on a …

Machine Boundary Finding And Sample Classification Of Remotely Sensed Agricultural Data, J. N. Gupta, R. L. Kettig, D. A. Landgrebe, P. A. Wintz Jan 1973

Machine Boundary Finding And Sample Classification Of Remotely Sensed Agricultural Data, J. N. Gupta, R. L. Kettig, D. A. Landgrebe, P. A. Wintz

LARS Technical Reports

Initially, methods for analyzing earth observational data involved the use of only spectral variations measured from the scene. The work reported in this paper provides a method for making some use of spatial variations as well. The results of some preliminary tests of this new method show significant improvements in accuracy.

Error Free Coding, J. R. Duan, P. A. Wintz Jan 1973

Error Free Coding, J. R. Duan, P. A. Wintz

LARS Technical Reports

An adaptive transform coding technique followed by a DPCM technique is employed to code multispectral data. A method of instantaneous expansion of quantization levels by reserving two codewords in the codebook to perform a folding over in quantization is implemented for data with incomplete knowledge of probability density function. Controlled redundancy is inserted periodically as fixed length codewords into the bit string of data packed with variable length codes to facilitate fact retrieval and to detect errors. Preliminary results of several sets of data from the ERTS-1 data frame and the ERIM aircraft data frame showed that an error free …

A Linear Shift-Invariant Image Preprocessing Technique For Multispectral Scanner Systems, C. D. Mcgillem, T. E. Riemer Jan 1973

A Linear Shift-Invariant Image Preprocessing Technique For Multispectral Scanner Systems, C. D. Mcgillem, T. E. Riemer

LARS Technical Reports

A linear shift-invariant image preprocessing technique is examined which requires no specific knowledge of any parameter of the original image and which is sufficiently general to allow the effective radius of the composite imaging system to be arbitrarily shaped and reduced, subject primarily to the noise power constraint. In addition, the size of the point-spread function of the preprocessing filter can be arbitrarily controlled, thus minimizing truncation errors.

Automatic Boundary And Sample Classification Of Remotely Sensed Multispectral Data, R. L. Kettig, D. A. Landgrebe Jan 1973

Automatic Boundary And Sample Classification Of Remotely Sensed Multispectral Data, R. L. Kettig, D. A. Landgrebe

LARS Technical Reports

Presently, automatic classification of multispectral data images is most commonly effected on a point-by-point basis, as if the data vectors from one resolution element to the next were uncorrelated. In other words, no use is made of the spatial information contained in the scene. This is a useful but suboptimal approach, since in a practical situation strong correlations are certain to exist. "Sample classification" is a name used to refer to those classification schemes in which points a reclassified in sets (samples) rather than individually. It is assumed that all the points in a set belong to the same class. …

The Role Of Computer Networks In Remote Sensing Data Analysis, P. H. Swain, T. L. Philips, J. C. Lindenlaub

LARS Technical Reports

It has been hypothesized that computer networks can be used to make data processing facilities available to the remote sensing community both quickly and effectively. An experiment to test this hypothesis is being conducted by the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing at Purdue University, with the participation of potential users at several remote sites. Initial indications have been highly favorable, although final evaluation a waits further experience and the accumulation of usage data .
