A commercial color scanner with high resolution is used for picture processing. The scanner is modified and additional electronic instruments are connected to the built-in color computer. The operations are carried out in an on-line process, simultaneously with the scan of the picture a processed picture is recorded on a special scanner film. Because there is no storage of image datas short processing times are obtained. The image datas are handled in a color computer, a gradation processor, an operational amplifier and a comparator to realize various' procedures of picture operations.

Presented here is an algorithm that partitions a digitized multispectral image into parts that correspond to objects in the scene being sensed. The algorithm partitions an image into successively smaller rectangles and produces a partition that tends to minimize a criterion function.
Supervised an~ unsupervised classification techniques can be applied to partitioned images. This partition- then-classify approach is used to process images sensed from aircraft and the ERTS-1 satellite, and the method 1s shown to give relatively accurate results in classifying agricultural areas and extracting urban areas.

A Computer Recognition Of Bridges, Islands, Rivers And Lakes From Satellite Pictures, Ruzena Bajcsy, Mohamad Tavakoli

This paper describes a computer program which recognizes bridges, rivers, islands and lakes from satellite pictures. The program is structured into three basic parts: the world model, the low level operators, and the higher level program. The recognition process is conceived as a process of continuously refined verification of the hypothesized descriptions of objects. We use conceptual identification of objects during the recognition process as soon as we can; we equip these concepts with meanings in the three-dimensional world. We present several concrete examples as a demonstration of the capabilities of our program.
