LARS Symposia

Three approaches to computer-aided analysis of LANDSAT-1 MSS data were evaluated utilizing data from a test site in rugged, mountainous terrain. The approaches compared include non-supervised (clustering), modified supervised, and modified clustering. Test field results indicated classification accuracies of 78.5%, 70.0%, and 84.7%, respectively for the three analysis techniques. The modified clustering approach proved to be the optimal computer- aided analysis technique of those tested because of minimal computer time required, highest classification accuracy, and most effective analyst/data interaction. A detailed description of this analysis technique is included.

The Performance Of Unsupervised Clustering Techniques In The Classification Of Erts, A. C. Armstrong Jan 1975

The Performance Of Unsupervised Clustering Techniques In The Classification Of Erts, A. C. Armstrong

LARS Symposia

Three algorithms for unsupervised per-field classifications of ERTS data are discussed: a hierarchical technique, an iterative technique, and a chain technique. The feature set used comprised the gray-scale histograms for all four spectral bands, reduced to 32 classes per band, and evaluated for fields containing 50 by 50, 100 ⨯ 100, and 200 ⨯ 200 pixels, yielding respectively 2816, 704 and 176 fields to an ERTS frame. Although it yielded excellent results, it was possible to use the hierarchical technique only on the smallest of these data sets. An iterative technique proved rapid for small data set, but used excessive …

Digital Image Reconstruction And Resampling For Geometric Manipulation, K. W. Simon Jan 1975

Digital Image Reconstruction And Resampling For Geometric Manipulation, K. W. Simon

LARS Symposia

The problems of digital image registration and geometric correction can be subdivided into two parts: 1) determination of the warping function which will transform the geometry of the scene to the desired geometric coordinate system; and 2) processing of the digital image intensity samples, given the warping function, to produce image samples on the desired coordinate grid. The latter process, called "resampling", is a subset of the problems of image reconstruction, i.e., determination of the continuous (analog) image from a set of samples of the image, and is the subject of this paper.

This paper defines the process of image …

Signature Extension Using The Masc Algorithm, R. G. Henderson Jan 1975

Signature Extension Using The Masc Algorithm, R. G. Henderson

LARS Symposia

A new signature extension method for use with LANDSAT data has been developed. The MASC (Multiplicative and Additive Signature Correction) algorithm uses an unsupervised clustering routine to gain relative information from two data sets. This information is then used to map the signatures derived from one data set onto the other data set. The MASC algorithm can be totally automated, thus making it suitable for use in large area crop inventories.

This signature extension method has been tested an agricultural LANDSAT data. The results of field center pixel classification using MASC-extended signatures have been compared with classification results using untransformed …

CITARS was an experiment designed to quantitatively evaluate crop identification performance for corn and soybeans in various environments using a well-defined set of automatic data techniques. These techniques differed mainly by the procedure used to obtain signatures from training data (e.g., clustering) and by the method of classification employed (e.g., linear or quadratic decision boundaries and equal or unequal class weights).

Each technique was applied to LANDSAT-1 data acquired over six Indiana and Illinois test sites throughout the growing season in an attempt to recognize and estimate proportions of corn and soybeans using both local and non-local (i.e. extended) training …

Interactive Image Processing For Meteorological Applications At Nasa/Goddard Space Flight Center, James B. Billingsley, Frederick A. Hasler Jan 1975

Interactive Image Processing For Meteorological Applications At Nasa/Goddard Space Flight Center, James B. Billingsley, Frederick A. Hasler

LARS Symposia

Interactive image data processing has greatly improved the capability to extract scientific information from satellite image data. Previous methods of batch processing did not allow the scientist to interpret intermediate results on a short enough time scale to effectively modify either the data or processes as required for efficient data extraction.

A primary Goddard Space Flight Center meteorological program objective is to develop methods to improve detection and prediction of severe storms using geostationary satellite measurements. Interactive data processing systems can perform many tasks towards meeting this objective.

The development of interactive image processing techniques which have led to meteorological …

Section 208 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 provided the opportunity and funding to fight water pollution through the use of regional water quality planning. A common requirement of the 208 program is to develop a capability of predicting water quality in the rivers and lakes resulting from existing and potential land-use policies. To achieve this capability, the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana (OKI) Regional Council of Governments is developing a deterministic model capable of predicting sediment and nutrient flow into the waterways. An essential input to OKI's model is an accurate map of land use within the watersheds. This …

Canonical Analysis For Increased Classification Speed And Channel Selection, Walter Eppler Jan 1975

Canonical Analysis For Increased Classification Speed And Channel Selection, Walter Eppler

LARS Symposia

The quadratic form can be expressed as a monotonically increasing sum of squares when the inverse covariance matrix is represented in canonical form. This formulation has the advantage that in testing a particular class hypothesis, computations can be discontinued when the partial sum exceeds the smallest value obtained for other classes already tested. A method for channel selection is presented which arranges the original input measurements in that order which minimizes the expected number of computations. The classification algorithm was tested on data from LARS Flight Line C1 and found to reduce the sum-of-products operations by a factor of 6.7 …

Signatures Analysis And Recognition Of Severe Weather Patterns, Paul P. Wang, Richard C. Burns Jan 1975

Signatures Analysis And Recognition Of Severe Weather Patterns, Paul P. Wang, Richard C. Burns

LARS Symposia

The results of observing the radiation from lightning discharge processes by William L. Taylor has indicated that radio frequency electrical activity was associated with the tornado producing severe storms that struck Oklahoma City during April, 1970. This paper reports our findings as the result of analyzing Taylor's' atmospherics rate data employing the techniques of time series analysis and pattern recognition. It shows the promise that sferics rate data can be used to establish unique signatures for the task of forecasting various severe weather patterns, however an extensive analysis of more data is needed before affirmative conclusions can be drawn.

Determination Of Groundwater Inflow To Prairie Lakes Using Remote Sensing, J. M. Whiting Jan 1975

Determination Of Groundwater Inflow To Prairie Lakes Using Remote Sensing, J. M. Whiting

LARS Symposia

This study was designed to find the locations in Big Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, where the transfer of surficial and aquifer groundwater occurs in the lake bed. Using the findings of a geological survey done between 1966 and 1969, and combining the results of the remote sensing techniques of ERTS, airborne radio phase detection (E-PHASE) and infrared line-scanning, it proved possible to locate nine areas at which inflow of groundwater is assumed to take place. Together these nine locations comprise an area of four square kilometers (1.5 mi²) in a lake that covers 250 square kilometers (100 mi²). In addition it …

Use Of Topographic Data On Land-Use Land-Cover Delineation By Erts Imagery, S. I. Solomon, J. Cameron, J. Chadwick, A. S. Aggarwal

LARS Symposia

The use of ERTS imagery for estimating land-use land-cover is of particular importance for the Canadian Department of the Environment for many reasons, one of which is the fact that this Department is using a lands-wide data bank of river basins characteristics for interpolation of hydrologic information in which land-use land-cover is an important one. Initially data on land-use land-cover were obtained by abstracting them by hand from 1/200,000 topographic maps, and were limited to the following elements: forested area, lake covered areas, swamp covered areas, and urbanized areas. The roughness of the information thus obtained, together with the fact …

Machine Aided Multispectral Analysis Utilizing Skylab Thermal Data For Land Use Mapping, L. L. Biehl, L. F. Silva

LARS Symposia

Eight channel Skylab multispectral scanner data obtained in January, 1974, was used in a level two land-use analysis of Allen County, Indiana. The data set which includes one visible channel, four near infrared channels, two middle infrared channels, and one far infrared channel was from the X-5 detector array of the S-192 experiment in the Earth Resources Experiment Package on board the Skylab space station. The results indicate that a good quality far infrared (thermal) channel is very valuable for land use mapping during the winter months.
