Acreage Estimation, Feature Selection, And Signature Extension Dependent Upon The Maximum Likelihood Decision Rule, John A. Quirein, M. C. Trichel Jan 1975

Acreage Estimation, Feature Selection, And Signature Extension Dependent Upon The Maximum Likelihood Decision Rule, John A. Quirein, M. C. Trichel

LARS Symposia

The maximum likelihood decision rule and estimation of the resulting m-class probability of misclassification are discussed. A bound on the variance of a proposed unbiased estimator of the m-class probability of error is derived. The problem of estimating the a priori probabilities for two classes is covered. When the estimator is counting the proportion of classified samples assigned to each class, a bound on the error of the estimate is derived. The problem of m-class feature selection using the Bhattacharyya distance is also addressed. The particular case in which each class density is assumed to be a mixture of multivariate …

A 4-Channel Optical Film Annotator For Production Of Planometrically Correct Images, Richard Steele, Mel Flores, Paul Ritter, J. D. Nichols, Michael Gialdini, W. M. Senkus

LARS Symposia

The RSRP has designed and built an optical film annotator called EGOR. This device has the ability to produce sharp images composed of dots 2 mils in size and in 64 different grey levels from jet black to full white. It can be used in either four-or two-channel modes and can produce four images of up to 6"x9" or two images of 9"x9", respectively.

EGOR also has capabilities to eliminate or induce certain kinds of distortions, for example the "skew" and' "squish" associated with ERTS tapes. The spacing between dots in the Y dimension can be varied to close up …

Geometric Analysis And Restitution Of Digital Multispectral Scanner Data Arrays, James R. Baker, Edward M. Mikhail Jan 1975

Geometric Analysis And Restitution Of Digital Multispectral Scanner Data Arrays, James R. Baker, Edward M. Mikhail

LARS Technical Reports

This thesis contains the results of an investigation performed in order to define causes of geometric defects within digital multispectral scanner (MSS) data arrays, to analyze the nature of the resulting geometric errors, and to investigate restitution methods to correct or reduce such geometric errors.

The thesis includes a review of digital multispectral scanning systems, including the recording and digital form for computer aided analysis. Causes of geometric errors within the data arrays are presented, and previous investigations of geometric aspects of remote sensing systems are reviewed.

The introduction of geometric transformation relationships for scanned data, from which collinearity equations …

Estimation Of A Large Area Crop Acreage Using Remote Sensing Technology, R. S. Chhikara, R. P. Heydorn, P. L. Odell Jan 1975

Estimation Of A Large Area Crop Acreage Using Remote Sensing Technology, R. S. Chhikara, R. P. Heydorn, P. L. Odell

LARS Symposia

One problem in the estimation of crop acreages from classification results of remotely sensed data points (pixels) is that misclassification is likely to arise in recognizing the crops represented by these pixels. When the observed crop proportion in a sample data set is obtained by computing the frequency of classifications into a crop type, a biased estimate of the true crop proportion in the agricultural area is, in general, obtained. To reduce bias, an adjustment is needed with respect to the amount of classification error present in the results. In our paper we discuss the problem of estimating the classification …

Spectral Characteristics Of Soils Related To The Interaction Of Soil Moisture, Organic Carbon, And Clay Content, Robert H. Beck Jan 1975

Spectral Characteristics Of Soils Related To The Interaction Of Soil Moisture, Organic Carbon, And Clay Content, Robert H. Beck

LARS Technical Reports

By measuring certain physical properties of fifteen soils typical of Wisconsin-aged, glacial till soils capped with less than 60 inches of loess in Indiana, the variations in spectral response in the laboratory were explained. Spectral reflectance measure with the Exotech 20-C can be significantly explained by percent moisture, organic carbon, and clay content of these soils. The soils studied were predominantly silty with a range of organic carbon from .60 to 1.33%. The moisture content of the soils was controlled by use of the pressure membrane at 15 bars, pressure plates at 1/3 bar, and oven dried at 105°C for …

Divergence Analysis Of Bendix Feature Extraction And Classification System, R. M. Dye, C. S. Chen Jan 1975

Divergence Analysis Of Bendix Feature Extraction And Classification System, R. M. Dye, C. S. Chen

LARS Symposia

Many investigators reporting on feature extraction algorithms expect a decrease in recognition accuracy as an inevitable consequence of information loss. A feature extraction procedure is introduced which through empirical study indicates an improvement in recognition rate beyond that of a maximum likelihood classifier while permitting computational economy as a result of dimensionality reduction. Average divergence is shown to have increased after the application of the feature extraction procedure.

An Acquisition And Processing Equipment For Sr And Vhrr Picture Data Of Weather Satellites Of The Noaa 3 Type 3 Type, R. Buecklein, E. Krauth, M. Mozer, R. Stoiber Jan 1975

An Acquisition And Processing Equipment For Sr And Vhrr Picture Data Of Weather Satellites Of The Noaa 3 Type 3 Type, R. Buecklein, E. Krauth, M. Mozer, R. Stoiber

LARS Symposia

For meteorological research a picture processing equipment was built up to handle picture data from scanning radiometers on board the weather satellites of the NOAA 3 type. The received analog signals are digitized and stored on computer compatible tapes for processing by a computer. Simultaneously the data are fed to a picture-printer to get quick-look pictures. The picture-printer is an opto-mechanical scanner of high precision, the rotation of the film-drum of this device is synchronized with the rotation of the scanning mirrors on board the satellite. AS well pictures of the scanning radiometer system (SR) as pictures Of the very …

Summary Of: Photographic Display Of Landsat-1 Cct Images For Improved Geological Definition, T. G. Longshaw, R. P. Viljoen, M. C. Hodson

LARS Symposia

LANDSAT-1 Bulk MSS Computer Compatible Tapes (CCT's) maintain the intrinsic radiometric and spatial qualities of the MSS (NASA, 19721 and as such are potentially superior to MSS 70 mm photographic products in the study of both regional and small scale geological trends. A convenient method of realising this potential is via a digital-to-analogue conversion of processed CCT data and CRT display to produce photographic hardcopy. This paper describes a flexible method of producing such displays that can be colour composited with ground-based mapping data transformed to be compatible with the MSS geometric projection. Mapping accuracy of image detail to corresponding …

The South Dakota Land Use Inventory System, Paul A. Tessar Jan 1975

The South Dakota Land Use Inventory System, Paul A. Tessar

LARS Symposia

All levels of government share the need for natural resource information. Remote Sensing and computer technology can provide a cost effective means of collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing some of this data.

One of the principal areas where remotely sensed data is being applied in governmental natural resource planning is in the generation of land use, or more precisely, land cover information. The South Dakota State Planning Bureau, with assistance and technical support from the EROS Data Center, is implementing a Land Use and Natural Resource Inventory and Information System. A three phase program has been designed utilizing LANDSAT digital data …

Computer-Aided Analysis Of Landsat-1 Mss Data: A Comparison Of Three Approaches, Including A "Modified Clustering" Approach, M. D. Fleming, J. S. Berkebile, R. M. Hoffer Jan 1975

Computer-Aided Analysis Of Landsat-1 Mss Data: A Comparison Of Three Approaches, Including A "Modified Clustering" Approach, M. D. Fleming, J. S. Berkebile, R. M. Hoffer

LARS Technical Reports

Three approaches to computer-aided analysis of LANDSAT-1 MSS data were evaluated utilizing data from a test site in rugged, mountainous terrain. The approaches compared include non-supervised (clustering), modified supervised, and modified clustering. Test field results indicated classification accuracies of 78.58, 70.0%, and 84.7%, respectively for the three analysis techniques. The modified clustering approach proved to be the optimal computer-aided analysis technique of those tested because of minimal computer time required, highest classification accuracy, and most effective analyst/data interaction. A detailed description of this analysis technique is included.
