Computer Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Wheat Canopy Data, M. S. Sohel Jan 1976

Computer Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Wheat Canopy Data, M. S. Sohel

LARS Symposia

The existing mathematical models of wheat growth or yield are based on air temperatures two meters above the ground from standard nationwide or worldwide meteorological networks, whereas temperatures obtained by thermal infrared scanners on satellites, such as the current NOAA series are surface radiative temperatures. These temperatures are correlated, but are not necessarily the same. In order to use satellite-derived surface radiative temperatures in wheat growth or yield models developed using standard air temperatures, the empirical relationship between these two temperatures needs to be established for the range of anticipated conditions.

Experiments were performed for bare soil and wheat canopies …

Ibis: A Geographic Information System Based On Digital Image Processing And Image Raster Datatype, Nevin A. Bryant, Albert L. Zobrist

LARS Symposia

There is a pressing need for geographic information systems which can manage spatially-referenced data, that perform certain types of spatially-oriented processing, and that are current and comprehensive. Polygon overlay and grid cell information systems access data for selected areas, but their data files are time consuming to generate and frequently costly to process. Updating of land use changes for such systems may become prohibitively expensive. In response to the present dilemma, a system is presented that makes use of digital image processing techniques to interface existing geocoded data sets and information management systems with thematic maps and remotely sensed imagery. …

Needed: A Better Approach To State And Federal Agencies, Chris J. Johannsen Jan 1976

Needed: A Better Approach To State And Federal Agencies, Chris J. Johannsen

LARS Symposia

Remote sensing projects in Missouri were conducted by several state agencies, the University of Missouri, the University of Kansas, and several federal agencies during the 60's. Many used aerial photography before that time period. During the 70's, remote sensing efforts continued among the participants but with better communication and coordination.

The Missouri approach is not unusual. Basically we have been attempting to teach state and federal agency personnel how to use aerial photography and space images to assist them with their work. Research efforts have been closely tied to the needs of the user with actual involvement in the research. …

Automated Ground Coordinate Sampling, George E. Lukes Jan 1976

Automated Ground Coordinate Sampling, George E. Lukes

LARS Symposia

Analytical techniques have been designed, tested and implemented that provide automated procedures for referencing terrain locations defined by ground coordinates in digital images. Based on principles of analytical photogrammetry, these techniques termed projective sampling, rigorously account for camera position and orientation Corrections for lens distortion, atmospheric refraction, film deformation and other sources of systematic distortion can be incorporated. A ground coordinate data base, an image digitizer which also serves as a comparator and well-defined imaging geometry, such as that of frame cameras, are required.

The Automated Recognition Of Urban Development From Landsat Images, P. Carter, M. Jackson Jan 1976

The Automated Recognition Of Urban Development From Landsat Images, P. Carter, M. Jackson

LARS Symposia

The problems and progress made in the development of automated methods for the recognition and extraction of urban land use features from the LANDSAT digital data of the UK are described. In the data examined so far density slicing in one waveband appears to be almost as effective as multiwaveband classification in selecting the urban areas. While absolute boundaries may be difficult to delineate, new developments may be recognisable which would be adequate for monitoring needs. It appears important to include the effects of seasonal change and make use of texural analysis in the classification process.

Thermal Sensing Of The Chihuahuan: Feasibility Study With The Noaa-4, William R. Hazard Jan 1976

Thermal Sensing Of The Chihuahuan: Feasibility Study With The Noaa-4, William R. Hazard

LARS Symposia

Multiband and multistage scanning were used to locate broad promising agricultural sites in the Texas portion of the Chihuahuan Desert followed by a detailed study of ground temperature variances in these site locations. Ground truth obtained from thermal probes, and thermal imagery from a helicopter borne scanner were correlated with imagery VHRR scanning radiometer aboard the NOAA-4 satellite. Temperature estimates from the satellite were calculated from the analog tapes and image enhancement and density slicing of the satellite imagery were utilized.

Soil temperatures at three locations within the test sites were acquired with an automatic data logging system. The data …

Sequential Classification And Clustering Methods Applied To Digitized Photographs, Chapman P. Gleason

LARS Symposia

This paper presents a system for object detection and counting from transparencies digitized using a scanning microdensitometer. Classification and clustering methods are applied sequentially to digitized transparencies of an orange tree and a low altitude color infrared aerial photograph of a citrus orange. The objective is to count oranges on the digitized ground transparency and to count fruit trees on the digitized infrared aerial photograph. This general flow can be applied to any type of spectral data for object detection and counting.
