An Unsupervised Procedure Using Multidimensional Histogram Information, D. S. Kamat, K. Padmanabhan, K. L. Majumdar
LARS Symposia
Data obtained by Multispectral Scanner (MSS) or multiband photography for resources information extraction is usually very large. If this data has to be processed operationally, some fast processing techniques should be available. I n this paper an unsupervised classification technique for processing MSS data is discussed.
he technique uses multidimensional histogram information (frequency) from multispectral digital data. The multidimensional histogram in this case may be considered as the summation of all the frequencies. A frequency may be considered to correspond to a class if it is greater than a predefined minimum number of population for a class. By comparing all …
Applications Of Landsat Data For Resource Inventories On Federal Lands In The Western United States, William D. Dipaolo
Applications Of Landsat Data For Resource Inventories On Federal Lands In The Western United States, William D. Dipaolo
LARS Symposia
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and NASA have been involved in a program over the past three years to evaluate the applicability of utilizing Landsat digital data for the inventory and mapping of natural resources on BLM managed lands in the Western U.S. As part of this program, a 1,215,000 hectare (3 million acre) area in southwestern Idaho is currently being analyzed to obtain an inventory of wildland vegetation for rangeland management. Within this area approximately 101,250 hectares (250,000 acres) are being studied for soils using digital data obtained from Landsats 2 and 3. The current results of …
The Use Of Prior Probabilities In Maximum Likelihood Classification, Alan H. Strahler
The Use Of Prior Probabilities In Maximum Likelihood Classification, Alan H. Strahler
LARS Symposia
The use of prior information about the expected distribution of classes in a final classification map can be used to improve classification accuracies. Prior information is incorporated through the use of prior probabilities--that is, probabilities of occurrence of classes which are based on separate, independent knowledge concerning the area to be classified. The use of prior probabilities in a classification system is sufficiently versatile to allow (1) prior weighting of output classes based on their-anticipated sizes; (2) the merging of continuously varying measurements (multispectral signatures) with discrete collateral information data sets (e.g., rock type, soil type); and (3) the construction …
A Digital Processor For The Production Of Seasat Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery, John R. Bennett, Ian G. Cumming
A Digital Processor For The Production Of Seasat Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery, John R. Bennett, Ian G. Cumming
LARS Symposia
With the launch of Seasat-A in June, 1978, the first spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar data was made available to the remote sensing community. While the mission only lasted 3+ months, a large volume of SAR data was recorded during this period, and recent image production is beginning to show the remarkable clarity of the data.
Synthetic Aperture Radar processing requires that many hundreds of operations be done per output pixel, and this high computation load has been handled in the past by optical computing techniques. While optical techniques have been very successful, they possess several limitations that digital processing can …

An Interactive Color Display System For Labelling Crops, Toyohisa Kaneko, Linda K. Moore, Robert T. Smart
LARS Symposia
To perform classification on remotely sensed imagery data, a small number of pixels or fields need to be labelled. It has been found that this labelling task requires many auxiliary materials such as crop calendar, soil data, cropping practice and a weather summary. This task is at the present time manually performed by photo-interpreters. It is time-consuming and liable to human error. The paper describes a computer based interactive color display system for assisting photointerpreters. Its objective is to reduce contact time and to increase labelling accuracy. This system has been designed to extract features from a temporal series of …

With the urgency throughout the country to complete the modern soil survey at the earliest possible date, new techniques and tools are being devised to carry out the soils mapping program. One such new mapping tool is a series of maps, derived from Landsat data, showing the spectral characteristics of soils. Whereas Jennings County, Indiana was the first county in the nation to be mapped using aerial photographs as base maps, Jasper County, Indiana is the first county to be mapped using spectral maps as an aid in. the county soil survey program.
These spectral maps depict the pattern and …

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been transferring remote sensing technology to state and local government agencies through the Regional Applications Program since 1977. Typical participants in the program are new to both remote sensing and computer-aided analysis. Therefore, it is essential to introduce them to technology as simply as possible. Two approaches to this are: (i) special purpose minicomputer based (turn key) systems, and (ii) remotely accessed software on general purpose computers. The latter approach facilitates entry into the field with significantly lower costs.
Most of the available software packages for analyzing remotely sensed data require familiarity …

A Methodology For A National Coverage Land Use Study By Computer, Jose Armando Diez P., Socrates A. Rivera R., Miguel Medina G.
LARS Symposia
Some pilot studies made in the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources demonstrated the possibility to realize Natural Resources Inventories, using a Computer in Interpretation of Landsat CCT's with success, and a large spare of time.
These pilot studies continued until our first achievement: the development of our own Interpretation Computer System, begun in 1974 and called SIADIS (Sistema de Interpretacion Automatica de Imagenes de Satelite). This system ran first in the Ministry CDC 3300 (Batch) Computer System and afterly in a CEC-Cyber without interactive analysis facilities, nor T.V. monitors or special graphical output.
In 1977 was presented a proposal …
Training Samples For Classification Of Multispectral Earth Observation Data, Marwan J. Muasher, David A. Landgrebe
Training Samples For Classification Of Multispectral Earth Observation Data, Marwan J. Muasher, David A. Landgrebe
LARS Symposia
An important step in the use of pattern recognition methods is the training of the classifier. This work attempts to investigate the effects of some of the parameters contributing towards a correct classification.
Specifically, the effects of the number of training samples, the amount of detail in gray scale, and the degree of separability among classes are investigated. Empirical studies are performed, and results reported showing the interaction among these three parameters. Statistical analysis is performed on the results to determine their significance.
The results suggest that the independence of samples may be of importance in determining the number of …
Image Representation Of Digital Remote Sensing Data: A Perspective, David M. Freeman
Image Representation Of Digital Remote Sensing Data: A Perspective, David M. Freeman
LARS Symposia
Remote sensing data is the main component for determining answers to numerous fundamental questions regarding the earth's environment and resources. Throughout the history of man, he has answered many of these questions with his own human remote sensors. Primary to these sensors are the images obtained by his eyes and interpreted by his brain. Universally, humans guide much of their activity based on images obtained by their eyes. Today, satellites with multispectral scanners take synoptic views of the earth's surface. While computers aid modern interpretation of these reconstructed digital images, humans still obtain much meaningful interpretation by visual inspection combined …
