Entanglements And Cross-Border Connectivity Of The Nordic–Baltic Region, Marta Edling, Annika Öhrner
Artl@s Bulletin
At the center of attention of this issue is trans-local, transnational, regional, and worldwide contacts inside and outside the Nordic-Baltic region from the late 1800s to the late 1900s. As an introduction, this text attempts to give an overview of some of its major themes and findings. It highlights how the interactive function of cross-border contacts is demonstrated by cases of art and design transfers, artistic travels, Scandinavian intellectual contacts, and cross-border connections over 100 years. Together, the texts published in this issue reflect the interdependent nature of international relations and the vital function of intermediate positions.

With the transformation of the AGEP project initiative, identifying and preserving the knowledge created and making it available for re-use by other researchers and higher education institutions will require the development of a specific intervention.
The current trajectory for the Alliances materials will fail to reach the larger audiences needed to realize their full promise and the materials will be lost over time due to the absence of infrastructure to provide ongoing access.

Pisum Sativum Has No Competitive Responses To Neighbors: A Case Study In (Non)Reproducible Plant Biology, Mariah L. Mobley, Audrey S. Kruse, Gordon G. Mcnickle
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Plant–plant competition is ubiquitous in nature. However, studying below ground behavior of roots has always posed certain difficulties. Pea (Pisum sativum L.) has become a common study species for questions about how plant roots respond to neighboring plant roots and barriers in soil. However, published results point in several different directions. This has sometimes been interpreted as pea having sophisticated context dependent responses that can change in complex ways depending on its surroundings, but it could also just point to small statistical power resulting in type I or II statistical errors. To explore this further, here, we combine the result …

Osmotically assisted reverse osmosis (OARO) or counterflow reverse osmosis (CFRO) are recent RO configurations that uses saline streams on both sides of the membrane in counterflow. This reduces the osmotic pressure difference that needs to be overcome for permeation and allows water recovery from high salinity feeds at regular RO pressure. Batch RO is a new, transient RO configuration that closely follows the osmotic pressure profile of the feed and is marked by high energy efficiency. In this work we extend a transient version of CFRO, Batch CFRO for high recovery (~74%) desalination of seawater using a temporally multi-staged version …
Intercultural Content Reuse And Social Justice: Comparing Chinese And U.S. Media Coverage Of Anti-Asian Racism During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Chenxing Xie
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
The outbreak of COVID-19 as a global pandemic has brought human society tremendous pressure and significant changes. Asian Americans suffered from both the COVID-19 pandemic and anti-Asian racism. Organizations were established to fight against anti-Asian hate and related crimes. An organization named Stop AAPI Hate publishes yearly reports regarding anti-Asian hate, and the content is reused by mass and social media worldwide. This study adopts theories of content reuse, intercultural communication, immaterial labor, and social justice to conduct a qualitative content analysis of the content reused by mass and social media in China and the United States. The results show …

Translingual And Translational Practices As Rhetorical Care Technologies In Covid-19 Recovery, Soyeon Lee
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
Drawing from an ethnographic study with Korean-speaking language minority communities in an urban metropolitan area in the United Sates, this study illuminates how multilingual transnational community workers and members cope with disaster recovery–specific technologies in the aftermath of COVID-19. Networking studies on language and cultural differences and studies on care rhetorics in feminist science and technology studies, this study examines how language minorities enact translingual and translational activities as care practices. By attending to racial, linguistic, and cultural differences and unequal power structures, this study identifies four emerging findings: 1) developing translingual attunements; 2) cultivating transmodal attunements; 3) producing translational …

Building Coalitions To Support Indigenous Language Speakers During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Erika Hernández Cuevas, Laura J. Gonzales
Building Coalitions To Support Indigenous Language Speakers During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Erika Hernández Cuevas, Laura J. Gonzales
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
While the work of language access is ongoing and has been taking place for a long time in various contexts, language access efforts often ignore Indigenous communities. As such, more interventions are needed to recognize how health-related messaging needs to be adapted not only across languages, but across worldviews. In this article, a technical communication scholar and Spanish-English translator and a Chinateco-Spanish translator, interpreter, and activist from the Municipio de San Pedro Yolox discuss their work to foster language access during the COVID-19 pandemic for and with Indigenous language speakers in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico, and Gainesville, Florida, USA. Through …
The Communicative And Affective Labor Of Public Pandemic Diaries: The Case Of Fang Fang’S Wuhan Diary, Chen Chen
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
This article studies the immaterial labor of Fang Fang’s Wuhan diary about the Wuhan COVID-19 lockdown time period, Jan 23 to Apr 8, 2020 (her diary ran from Jan 25 to Mar 24). Guided by social justice-informed, critically contextualized methodology, this analysis examines how the rhetoric of Fang Fang’s diary as tactical communication contributed to enacting social justice during the Wuhan lockdown by recognizing, revealing and rejecting oppressions people experienced both due to the challenges of the pandemic outbreak and the government’s inadequate and problematic responses. In doing so, Fang Fang uses her own positionality and privilege to challenge problematic …

Manufactured Scarcity: Countering Artificial Information Vacuums Through Grassroot Risk Communications During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Pritisha Shrestha, Gabriella Wilson
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic has not only revealed medical disparities between countries in terms of access to vaccines but has also unveiled huge rifts in knowledge and information flow regarding the pandemic and vaccination amongst the general public. With this in view, we will interrogate how grassroot communicators and social networking sites have worked alongside each other to disseminate information about the pandemic that counters the narratives provided by the state. As scholars of rhetoric, we intend to trace the ways in which professional communication and state disinformation produce information vacuums amongst citizens while also illuminating how localized resistance and …
Dismantling Institutional Whiteness: Emerging Forms Of Leadership In Higher Education, M. Cristina Alcalde, Mangala Subramaniam
Dismantling Institutional Whiteness: Emerging Forms Of Leadership In Higher Education, M. Cristina Alcalde, Mangala Subramaniam
Navigating Careers in Higher Education Series
Dismantling Institutional Whiteness: Emerging Forms of Leadership in Higher Education focuses on the experiences of women of color in leadership roles in higher education. Top roles historically have gone to white men, and leadership has not reflected the range of identities and people who make up higher education. Why? And why does this problem continue to this day? Most importantly, what can be done to bring about meaningful change?
Dismantling Institutional Whiteness gathers a range of first-person narratives from women of color and examines the challenges they face not only at a systemic level, but also at a deeply personal …

Predictors Of Preschool Language Environments And Their Relations To Children's Vocabulary, Robert Duncan, Kirsten L. Anderson, Yemimah A. King, Jennifer Finders, Sara A. Schmitt, David J. Purpura
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Despite support for the importance of early language environments, little is known about the naturally occurring experiences children have in preschool settings. The current study sample included 91 children (Mage = 4.72 years; 56% male; 67% White) from 23 preschool classrooms and nearly 1500 h of language environment data from three waves throughout the preschool year. Of the sociodemographic characteristics, family income is most closely related to children's preschool language environments. A standard deviation increase in family income was related to children hearing approximately one million more adult words in their preschool classroom. However, conversational turns were the …

Review: Counterstories From The Writing Center By Wonderful Faison And Frankie Condon, Alexandria Hanson
The Writing Center Journal
Counterstories from the Writing Center is a book that centers the perspectives and experiences of peoples of color in writing centers as tutors, administrators, and students. The book aims to educate all readers, but specifically “white, straight, cisgendered women (WSCGW)” (p. 5), whose presence has permeated writing center scholarship and work, about how writing centers often engage in representational change or practice, applying Band-Aid solutions that fail to enact social justice and antiracist practices. The goal of the book is to get readers to exercise a certain level of humility, to reflect on and accept responsibility, in order to enact …

Systematic Reviews On Hai Topics: A Look At Reporting Practices, Jane Kinkus Yatcilla, Kelly Weigand
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Human-animal interactions (HAI) are being studied with increased frequency, evidenced by a steady increase in the number of published articles and the number of journals publishing them. Evidence synthesis methods like systematic review (SR) provide a stronger level of evidence than individual studies and are often used to inform practice guidelines. To ensure SR accuracy and reliability, they must follow rigorous, prescribed methodologies. Objectives: This study of HAI SRs was designed to determine the characteristics of HAI SRs in terms of publication patterns, human subjects, animal(s) of interest, and outcomes, and to answer: (Q1)Which methodological guideline was followed? Was a …

Liquid Composite Molding (LCM) techniques including the Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) and Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) are gaining significant importance for fabricating aerospace and automotive composite parts, owing to the low investment costs. During the curing process, the resin undergoes a property change due to cross-linking of polymers, where it transitions from the liquid state to the solid state. Further, during the cooling process, there is a change in the glass transition temperature, resulting in residual stress and strains. The residual strain and deformations accumulated during the curing of the resin at high temperatures result in significant challenges …
