Quantum Transport With Dissipation: Linear And Non-Linear Response, Supriyo Datta, Michael J. Mclennan Dec 1988

Quantum Transport With Dissipation: Linear And Non-Linear Response, Supriyo Datta, Michael J. Mclennan

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We present a quantum transport equation derived under the simplifying assumption that the inelastic scattering is caused by uncorrelated point scatterers, such as magnetic impurities. While this assumption is not always realistic, we believe that the model can be used to describe much of the essential physics of quantum transport in mesoscopic systems. This assumption allows us to write a quantum transport equation that involves only the diagonal elements of the density matrix which we use to define a distribution function f(r; E). The kernel of this integral equation is calculated from the Schrodinger equation and contains all quantum interference …

Harmonic Characteristics And Voltage Support For Inverters With A Weak Ac Supply, Ahmed Bensenouci, C. M. Ong Dec 1988

Harmonic Characteristics And Voltage Support For Inverters With A Weak Ac Supply, Ahmed Bensenouci, C. M. Ong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In recent years, the world-wide use of high voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission has increased sharply. Most of the recent projects involve transmitting large amounts of power from remote generations to load centers, where the short-circuit capacity at the receiving bus is often only a few times that of the rated DC power transfer — indicative of a weak AC support that is more susceptible to various operational problems, such as harmonic amplification, poor voltage regulation and adverse effects on the firing control. This report is on a two-part investigation. The first part deals with the harmonics characteristics of …

3d-Poly: A Robot Vision System For Recognizing Objects In Occluded Environments, C. H. Chen, A. C. Kak Dec 1988

3d-Poly: A Robot Vision System For Recognizing Objects In Occluded Environments, C. H. Chen, A. C. Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The two factors that determine the time complexity associated with model-driven interpretation of range maps are: I) the particular strategy used for the generation of object hypotheses; and 2) the manner in which both the model and the sensed data are organized, data organization being a primary determinant of the efficiency of verification of a given hypothesis. In this report, we present 3D-POLY, a working system for recognizing objects in the presence of occlusion and against cluttered backgrounds. The time complexity of this system is only O(n2) for single object recognition, where n is the number of features on the …

Basic Studies Of Iii-V High Efficiency Cell Components, M. S. Lundstrom, M. R. Melloch, R. F. Pierret, M. S. Carpenter

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The objective of the project is to raise the understanding of dark current mechanisms in GaAs-related solar cells to a level comparable to that of silicon cells. Motivation for this work arises from the observation that much of the progress in crystalline silicon cell performance has occurred as a result of a very deep knowledge of the physics controlling the cell’s dark current. Based on this knowledge, new cell structures evolved to suppress dominant dark current mechanisms. A comparable level of knowledge of GaAs cell device physics does not yet exist, but will be essential if cell performance near the …

One Dimensional Quantum Transport: Characterization And Device Applications, Roger K. Lake Dec 1988

One Dimensional Quantum Transport: Characterization And Device Applications, Roger K. Lake

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

With the maturing of the technologies of molecular beam epitaxy and electron beam direct write, semiconductor crystals can be engineered on the size scale of a de Broglie wavelength in both the vertical and lateral directions. On this scale, the wave nature of the electrons becomes manifest and it becomes possible to conceive of devices that exploit wave properties such as resonance and diffraction. In this work, a complete fabrication process for building sub-micron conducting channels analogous to a waveguide in a high mobility GaAs - AlGaAs heterostructure is developed. The waveguides are characterized with respect to the number of …

Edge Detection By Cost Minimization, Hin Leong Tan, Edward J. Delp Dec 1988

Edge Detection By Cost Minimization, Hin Leong Tan, Edward J. Delp

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Edge detection is cast as a problem in cost minimization. This is achieved by the formulation of two cost functions which evaluate the quality of edge configurations. The first is a comparative cost function (CCF), which is a linear sum of weighted cost factors. It is heuristic in nature and can be applied only to pairs of similar edge configurations. It measures the relative quality between the configurations. The detection of edges is accomplished by a heuristic iterative search algorithm which uses the CCF to evaluate edge quality. The second cost function is the absolute cost function (ACF), which is …
