Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
Success in extreme environments comes with a cost of subtle performance decrements that if not mitigated properly can lead to lifethreatening consequences. Identification and prediction of performance decline could alleviate deleterious consequences and enhance success in challenging and high-risk operations. The Rim-to-Rim Wearables at the Canyon for Health (R2R WATCH) project was designed to examine the cognitive, physiological, and biological markers of performance decline in the extreme environment of the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim (R2R) hike. The study utilized commercial off-the-shelf cognitive and physiological monitoring techniques, along with subjective self-assessments and hematologic measurements to determine subject performance and changes across the …

Implementing Epoxy Injection In Concrete Overlaid Bridge Decks, Prince Baah
Implementing Epoxy Injection In Concrete Overlaid Bridge Decks, Prince Baah
JTRP Technical Reports
Concrete overlays have proven to be an effective maintenance treatment as they slow de-icing chemical and water penetration into the original deck surface. Typically, due to vibration, structural flexibility, and weak bond between the concrete overlay and deck concrete potentially due to poor construction, de-bonding develops at the boundary between the original deck and overlay. This de-bonding creates voids, providing reservoir for chloride laden water to fill after it penetrates cracks in the surface. Displacing this liquid solution and filling these cracks with epoxy helps reduce freeze/thaw cycling and reduces spalling. The epoxy material protects the bridge deck from moisture …

Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
In this study, we explore the following: a) How do secondary student teachers, engaged in collaborative action research, function as critical friends? b) What challenges do they encounter? How do they mitigate these challenges? and c) In what ways did meeting as critical friends influence the student teachers’ learning to conduct collaborative action research? The participants in our study included 38 secondary school student teachers (defined here at grades 9 through 12) in the last year of a two-year Masters program from a large, research-intensive university situated in the West of Ireland. The student teachers were organized into 11 critical …
The Study Of Children With Developmental Language Disorder Beyond English: A Tutorial, Laurence B. Leonard, Mariel L. Schroeder
The Study Of Children With Developmental Language Disorder Beyond English: A Tutorial, Laurence B. Leonard, Mariel L. Schroeder
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
The main goal of this tutorial is to promote the study of children with developmental language disorder (DLD) across different languages of the world. The cumulative effect of these efforts is likely to be a set of more compelling and comprehensive theories of language learning difficulties and, possibly, of language acquisition in general. Benefits to children and local societies are also likely to accrue. After presenting some of the initial considerations involved in the cross-linguistic study of children with language disorders, we provide examples of the types of questions that might be asked. The examples are informed by our own …

Sources Of Misinterpretation In The Input And Their Implications For Language Intervention With English-Speaking Children, Laurence B. Leonard, Patricia Deevy, Shelley L. Bredin-Oja, Mariel L. Schroeder
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Purpose: In English and related languages, many preschool-age children with developmental language disorder (DLD) have difficulties using tense and agreement consistently. In this review article, we discuss two potential input-related sources of this difficulty and offer several possible strategies aimed at circumventing input obstacles. Method: We review a series of studies from English, supplemented by evidence from computational modeling and studies of other languages. Collectively, the studies show that instances of failures to express tense and agreement in DLD resemble portions of larger sentences in everyday input in which tense and agreement marking is appropriately absent. Furthermore, experimental studies show …

Simulated Dormant Peppermint (Mentha × Piperita) Response To Mesotrione: A Greenhouse Study, Emmanual G. Cooper, Jeanine Arana, Stephen L. Meyers
Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications
A dose-response trial was conducted in two experimental runs at the Purdue University Horticulture Greenhouses, West Lafayette, IN, in 2021/2022 to determine the effect of mesotrione rate on simulated dormant ‘Redefined Murray Mitcham’ peppermint. Peppermint was established in 20-cm-diam polyethylene pots, it was then harvested, and pots were placed in a cooler (4 C) for 1 mo. Potted peppermint plants were removed from cold storage and treated with one of five mesotrione rates: 0 (nontreated control), 53, 105, 210, or 420 g ai ha–1. As mesotrione rate increased from 53 to 420 g ai ha–1, predicted peppermint injury increased from …

Department of Nutrition Science Faculty Publications
Phosphorus is a vital nutrient, but disturbances in phosphorus homeostasis are central to chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder. To minimize disturbances, traditional dietary guidance focused on a numerical phosphorus target leading to the exclusion of many healthy foods and implementation challenges. Contemporary phosphorus guidance focuses on dietary source, avoiding additives, and emphasizing low-phosphorus bioaccessibility foods, leading to a more liberal approach. Additional work is needed to demonstrate the efficacy of these contemporary approaches and understand the influence of specific foods, processing, and cooking methods. Unfortunately, patient education using traditional and contemporary strategies may give mixed messages, particularly related to …

All Winged Their Supermen: Mina Loy, Olive Moore, And The Transhumanist Imagination, Maren Linett
All Winged Their Supermen: Mina Loy, Olive Moore, And The Transhumanist Imagination, Maren Linett
Department of English Faculty Publications
Recent scholarship has demonstrated some of the ways modernism depends on eugenic thinking. Exploring similarities and differences between eugenics and early transhumanism, this article identifies in modernist literature a strand of more radical transhumanist desire. Looking in particular at Mina Loy's poems "Parturition" and "Songs to Joannes" and Olive Moore's novel Spleen, it argues that these texts turn the modernist call to "make it new" on human beings ourselves, as Loy and Moore imagine maternity as a means to advance evolution, if only it could transcend the disappointing reproducibility of the human being.
Measuring Bilingual Language Dominance: An Examination Of The Reliability Of The Bilingual Language Profile, Daniel J. Olson
Measuring Bilingual Language Dominance: An Examination Of The Reliability Of The Bilingual Language Profile, Daniel J. Olson
School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
Measuring language dominance, broadly defined as the relative strength of each of a bilingual’s two languages, remains crucial methodological issue in bilingualism research. While various methods have been proposed, the Bilingual Language Profile (Birdsong et al., 2012) has been one of the most widely used tools for measuring language dominance. While previous studies have begun to establish its validity, the Bilingual Language Profile has yet to be systematically evaluated with respect to reliability. Addressing this methodological gap, the current study examines the reliability of the Bilingual Language Profile, employing a test-retest methodology with a large (N = 248), varied sample …

Growing In Stem: Hands-On Education Via Tower Gardening, Jeffrey A. Nowak, Shelby Johnston-Werling
Growing In Stem: Hands-On Education Via Tower Gardening, Jeffrey A. Nowak, Shelby Johnston-Werling
Indiana STEM Education Conference
Sole use of a textbook as the primary source of learning in the middle school setting has been linked to potentially limit students’ conceptual understanding of complex content (Driscoll et al., 1994), while the positive impact of hands-on learning has been well documented (Ekwueme et al., 2015; Satterthwait, 2010). Ideally, when a textbook is used in conjunction with content applied in a hands-on manner, student engagement and understanding of standards-based content are increased. In a grant funded collaboration between the Northeast Indiana STEM Education Resource Center housed at Purdue University Fort Wayne and an East Allen Community Schools middle school …

Thinking With Algebra (TWA) is a curriculum development project for college students needing introductory/intermediate algebra. Unique guiding principles of the project are a focus on algebraic structure, mixed review, equity, and a classroom approach emphasizing small-group work and whole-class discussion (Feikes et al., 2022). Results are derived from a survey given to one class of fifteen students taking an intermediate algebra summer course. The paper shares both Likert and open-ended responses. Data demonstrates that the students believed that the TWA curriculum was beneficial.
Mind The Gap: Eugenics And Animality, Maren Linett
Mind The Gap: Eugenics And Animality, Maren Linett
Department of English Faculty Publications
This article argues that eugenics was motivated, in part, by human exceptionalism. It first explores the ways in which eugenics understood nonwhite race, disability, and animality as forces capable of exerting a drag on the forward thrust of eugenic progress. Next, it traces the incoherent discourse about animality within eugenics, demonstrating that while eugenic breeding—eugenic methods—relied on human animality, the fundamental goal of eugenics was to improve human beings by distancing us from that animality. The final part of the essay explores the imbrication of animality, race, and disability in Aldous Huxley’s 1948 novel Ape and Essence, arguing that the …

Thrown Into The World, Attached To Love: On The Forms Of World-Sharing And Mourning In Heidegger, Ahmet Aktas
Thrown Into The World, Attached To Love: On The Forms Of World-Sharing And Mourning In Heidegger, Ahmet Aktas
Department of Philosophy Student Publications
How can we understand the phenomena of loss and mourning in the Heideggerian framework? There is no established interpretation of Heidegger that gives an elaborate account of the phenomena of loss and mourning, let alone gauges its importance for our understanding and assessment of authentic existence in Heidegger. This paper attempts to do both. First, I give a detailed exposition of Heidegger’s analysis of the phenomena of mourning and loss and show that Heidegger’s analysis of mourning in his early and late work is strikingly in line with his collectivist understanding of Being-with. This demonstrates, contrary to what some of …

Impact Of Lubricant In The Performance Of Variable Speed Heat Pumps Working With R290, Rubén Ossorio, Emilio Navarro-Peris, Riley Barta
School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Modulating the speed of the compressors and adapting its capacity to the required load has led to a decrease in the annual energy consumption in many applications. However, in the compressor, having adequate lubrication at low speeds usually implies discharging too much lubricant at higher speeds. Although necessary for compressor operation, lubricating oil acts as a contaminant in the rest of the system. Consequently, manufacturers have to consider the oil circulation rate (OCR), as it limits the speed range of the compressor. In a previous study, a compressor was tested over its speed range (30 – 110 Hz), working with …
