Subgrade Resilient Modulus For Pavement Design And Evaluation, Woojin Lee, Nihal C. Bohra, Adolph G. Altschaeffl, Thomas D. White

JTRP Technical Reports

The main goal of this study was to develop a set of testing procedure for resilient modulus and to provide a set of resilient modulus data on typical Indiana soils. Soils tested were five cohesive soils and one granular soil. Resilient modulus tests were performed in the laboratory on a fully automated repeated-load triaxial equipment according to AASHTO T 274-82.

A set of correlations was developed between the resilient modulus and the unconfined compression test results for normal and thawed subgrade conditions, based on the test results on the specimen sampled from existing subgrades. Freeze-thaw and post compaction water content …

Chemical Admixtures Of Highway Concrete: Fundamental Research And A Guide To Usage, Part Ii - Quantitative Analysis Of Interactions Between Portland Cements And Superplasticizers, Sidney Diamond, Keisuke Matsukawa

JTRP Technical Reports

This report is made up to two distinct elements. Part II consists of a detailed record of laboratory research carried out to develop a pattern for physicochemical investigation of admixture effects. The procedures developed were then applied to the study of the detailed chemical interactions undergone by several different kinds of superplasticizer admixtures studied with a range of cements displaying various characteristics. Specific conclusions were drawn concerning the effects on superplasticizer effectiveness of certain cement characteristics, especially nature of the gypsum component and of cement alkali content.

This study compares mangers' perceptions of political, government policy, and macroeconomic uncertainties with the ratings provided by a professional rish assessment service. Survey data from six Latin American countries indicate rank orderings of the coutnries based on managers' uncertainty perceptions differ fromt he professional rish assessment ranking.

Central Bank's Expected Profits From Intervention, John A. Carlson, Insook Kim Jan 1993

Central Bank's Expected Profits From Intervention, John A. Carlson, Insook Kim

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

A leaning-against-the wind intervention that has only a temporary effect on the exchange rate and that is not too aggressive can be shown analytically to yield positive expected profits to a central bank even when the exchange-rate process is non-stationary. These profits arise if there are some transitory shocks to the exchange rate. Furthermore, very aggressive intervention will yeild positive expected profits eventually when there is a tendency for exchange rates to return to a long-run equilibrium level.

Information And Normal Backwardation As Determinants Of Trading Performance: Evidence From The North-Sea Oil Forward Market, Gordon M. Phillips, Robert J. Weiner Jan 1993

Information And Normal Backwardation As Determinants Of Trading Performance: Evidence From The North-Sea Oil Forward Market, Gordon M. Phillips, Robert J. Weiner

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

In this paper we take advantage of a unique micro-database on forward trading in the international petroleum market, with information on the buyer and seller in each transaction. We utilize transaction-specific data to test directly predictions from the theory of normal backwardation vs. information-based predictions of who profits in these markets. We find that no trader groups make significan profits on interday measures. Within the day, however, groups likely to have superior information do make significant profits. The results are not supportive of normal backwardation, but are consistent with the time pattern of information dissemination in this market--deals made during …

Industry And Country Effects On Manager's Perceptions Of Environmental Uncertainties, Kent D. Miller Jan 1993

Industry And Country Effects On Manager's Perceptions Of Environmental Uncertainties, Kent D. Miller

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

International management research highlights political, government policy, and macroeconomic uncertainties. Strategy studeies focus on input supply, product market, and competitive uncertainties. This study develops and tests the reliability of an instrument for measuring managers' uncertainty perceptions. Data analyses using an international sample provide insights into the relative importance of country and industry factors for explaining managers' perceptions of different environmental uncertainties.

The Effect Of Trade Induced Displacement On Unemployment And Wages, Jon D. Haveman Jan 1993

The Effect Of Trade Induced Displacement On Unemployment And Wages, Jon D. Haveman

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study provides an investigation into the differences in the postdisplacement labor market experiences of workers separated from declining traded, expanding traded and nontraded industries. The results presented provide the beginnings of a bridge across the gap between what is known and what is perceived regarding the allocative efficiency effects of trade-related labor displacements. The strategy of the paper is to relate the postdisplacement experience of individuals to changes in the competitive position of the industry from which the individual was displaced. The investigative lens is primarily focused on the impact of changing industry competitiveness on the duration of unemployment …

The Association Between The Level Of International Diversification And Risk, Stephen R. Goldberg, Frank L. Heflin Jan 1993

The Association Between The Level Of International Diversification And Risk, Stephen R. Goldberg, Frank L. Heflin

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study analyzes the association between the degree of international involvement (DOI) and risk. Both systematic risk (measured by the market model beta) and total rishk (measured by variance of return) are analyzed. Betas of fully diversified foreign stock portfolios are shown to be lower than betas of domestic portfolios. Therefore, if the beta of a foreign investment by a U.S. firm is equal to the average beta of an investment in the foreign market, then overall firm beta will deverase as DOI increases (hypothesis). While total risk might be decreased due to the diversification provided by increasing DOI, currency, …

Foreign Currency Translation Under Two Case-Integrated And Isolated Economies, Stephen R. Goldberg, Joseph H. Godwin Jan 1993

Foreign Currency Translation Under Two Case-Integrated And Isolated Economies, Stephen R. Goldberg, Joseph H. Godwin

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Beaver and Wolfson (1982 BW) identify economic interpretability and symmetry as desirable properties for financial statement translation. They then analyze translation methods with respect to these properties assuming perfect and complete markets between and within both countries (referred to, here, as the integrated economics case). This study extends BW's analysis by examining isolated economics characterized by perfect and complete internal markets and a random relationship between prices and exchange rates. In BW's integrated economics case, inflation differentials drive exchange rate changes. No exchange rish exists, although monetary assets are exposed to the risk of unexpected inflation. Isolated economies expose monetary …

Penalties And Exclusion In The Rescheduling And Forgiveness Of International Loans, John A. Carlson, Aasim M. Husain, Jeffrey A. Zimmerman Jan 1993

Penalties And Exclusion In The Rescheduling And Forgiveness Of International Loans, John A. Carlson, Aasim M. Husain, Jeffrey A. Zimmerman

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

When a borrowing coutnry is reluctant to repay an international loan, the lender has few legal remedies but can impose penalty costs that harm the borrower rather than benefit the lender. If the lender can also temporarily exclude the borrower from new loans, the borrower with a sufficiently high time preference will agree to reschedule the loan. If the rescheduling condition is met, a contract which includes a contingency for partial forgiveness can be shown to dominate a contract without forgiveness.

Some Welfare Effects Of Dynamic Customs Union Formation, Jon D. Haveman Jan 1993

Some Welfare Effects Of Dynamic Customs Union Formation, Jon D. Haveman

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper deals with an issue of increasing importance in a world where preferential trading arrangements are the call of the day: the effects on world welfare of sequential customs union foration. A computational model of customs union formation is developed and simulated under a variety of assumptions. These assumptions concern various characteristics of the world, the pattern of customs union formation, and GATT restrictions on the common external tariff imposed by the customs union. The results show that unrestricted customs union formation is likely to result in successive deterioration of world welfare, despite gains for the member countries collectively. …

Risk Aversion, Foreign Exchange Speculation And Gambler's Ruin, John A. Carlson Jan 1993

Risk Aversion, Foreign Exchange Speculation And Gambler's Ruin, John A. Carlson

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The apparent persistence of unexploited opportunities for expected profits in foreign exchange markets suggests extremely risk-averse market participants. A foreign exchange trader who faces favorable odds can make the probability of ruin arbitrarily small by betting a sufficiently small fraction of available wealth on each opportunity. The setting of a low value for the maximum acceptable probability of runin then provides a rationale for the trader behaving as if he or she has a high degree of risk aversion.

Interposed Abdominal Compression Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: Are We Missing The Mark In Clinical Trials?, Charles F. Babbs Jan 1993

Interposed Abdominal Compression Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: Are We Missing The Mark In Clinical Trials?, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Straightforward considerations of abdominal anatomy in human beings set tight constraints on the theoretically optimal technique for abdominal compressions during interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR. The location and extent of the abdominal aorta lead naturally to the recommendation that IAC be applied at a level corresponding to the lower two thirds of the sterno-umbilical line. The force vector required to achieve contact compression of the abdominal aorta is inclined in the transverse plane at an angle of 11 degrees from the vertical toward the left. Such slightly angled compression subjects the abdominal aorta to maximally flattening; while the inferior vena cava …
