Expected Values For Cache Miss Rates For A Single Trace (Technical Summary), Russell W. Quong Jul 1993

Expected Values For Cache Miss Rates For A Single Trace (Technical Summary), Russell W. Quong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The standard trace-driven cache simulation evaluates the miss rate of cache C on an address trace T for program P running on input data I with object-code address map M for P. We note that the measured miss rate depends significantly on the address mapping M set arbitrarily by the compiler and linker. In this paper, we remove the effect of the address-mapping on the miss rate by analyzing a symbolic trace T of basic blocks. By assuming each basic block has an equal probability of ending up anywhere in the cache,'we determine the average miss rate over all possible …

A Tutorial On Lisp Object-Oriented Programming For Blackboard Computation (Solving The Radar Tracking Problem) , P. R. Kersten, A. C. Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This exposition is a tutorial on how object-oriented programming (OOP) in Lisp can be used for programming a blackboard. Since we have used Common Lisp and the Common Lisp Object System (CLOS), the exposition demonstrates how object classes and the primary, before, and after methods associated with the classes can be used for this purpose. The reader should note that the different approaches to object-oriented programming share considerable similarity and, therefore, the exposition should be helpful to even those who may not wish to use CLOS. We have used the radar tracking problem as a 'medium' for explaining the concepts …

The Use Of Predicates In Ll(K) And Lr(K) Parser Generators (Technical Summary) , T. J. Parr, R. W. Quong, H. G. Dietz Jul 1993

The Use Of Predicates In Ll(K) And Lr(K) Parser Generators (Technical Summary) , T. J. Parr, R. W. Quong, H. G. Dietz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Although existing LR(1) or U(1) parser generators suffice for many language recognition problems, writing a straightforward grammar to translate a complicated language, such as C++ or even C, remains a non-trivial task. We have often found that adding translation actions to the grammar is harder than writing the grammar itself. Part of the problem is that many languages are context-sensitive. Simple, natural descriptions of these languages escape current language tool technology because they were not designed to handle semantic information. In this paper, we introduce predicated LR (k) and LL (k) parsers as a solution. Predicates provide a general, practical …

Register Allocation Via Weighted Graph Coloring (Technical Summary), Russell W. Quong, Shu-Ching Chen Jun 1993

Register Allocation Via Weighted Graph Coloring (Technical Summary), Russell W. Quong, Shu-Ching Chen

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Register allocation by coloring an interference graph is a common technique. We introduce the weighted interference graph (WIG) which improves upon previous approaches in the following ways: (i) the cost of a coloring accurately models the cost of the register assignment, (ii) arbitrary register spills are handled naturally, as the coloring implicitly determines when and what registers to spill, and (iii) the allocation granularity is freely scalable from an instruction level to a per variable level. In particular, at any granularity, a WIG models the degree of interference between two vertices, which improves upon the traditional interference graph. The weights …

Pns Modules For The Synthesis Of Parallel Self-Organizing Hierarchical Neural Networks, Faramarz Valafar, Okan K. Ersoy Jun 1993

Pns Modules For The Synthesis Of Parallel Self-Organizing Hierarchical Neural Networks, Faramarz Valafar, Okan K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The PNS module is discussed as the building block for the synthesis of parallel, selforganizing, hierarchical, neural networks (PSHNN). The PNS consists of a prerejector (P-unit), a neural network (N-unit) and a statistical analysis unit (S-unit). The last two units together are also referred to as the NS unit. The P- and NS-units are fractile in nature, meaning that each such unit may itself consist of a number of parallel PNS modules. Through a mechanism of statistical acceptance or rejection of input vectors for classification, the sample space is divided into a number of subspaces. The input vectors belonging to …
