Cramer-Rao Bounds For Discrete-Time Nonlinear Filtering Problems, Peter C. Doerschuk
Cramer-Rao Bounds For Discrete-Time Nonlinear Filtering Problems, Peter C. Doerschuk
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A Cramer-Rao bound for the mean squared error that can be achieved with non1inear observations of a nonlinear p-th order autoregressive (AR) process where both the process and observation noise covariances can be state dependent is presented. The major limitation is that the AR process must be driven by an additive white Gaussian noise process that has a full-rank covariance. A numerical example demonstrating the tightness of the bound for a particular problem is included.
Institutional Issues Related To The Application Of Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems Technologies To Commercial Vehicle Operations In Indiana, James G. Kavalaris, Kumares C. Sinha
Institutional Issues Related To The Application Of Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems Technologies To Commercial Vehicle Operations In Indiana, James G. Kavalaris, Kumares C. Sinha
JTRP Technical Reports
The study focused on potential barriers and opportunities to implementing Intelligent Vehicle-Highway System (IVHS) technologies to Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO) in Indiana. Specific concepts included: (1) Automatic payment of tolls while driving at mainline speeds; (2) Pre-Clearance of vehicles and drivers past weigh stations; (3) "One-Stop-Shopping" for licenses, registrations, and permits; and (4) Transparent state borders. The study reviewed existing laws and policies applying to commercial vehicles operating in Indiana; prepared an inventory of the agencies responsible, their existing procedures, their physical facilities, and their human resources used to implement these regulations; itemized present impediments preventing the implementation of IVHS-CVO …

Selected Topics On Demand Side Management, S. Alyasin, L. Chung, D Gotham, D. Hu, B. Kwon, J. Lee, A. Mok, A. Risal, R. Sasaki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Each year in the graduate course on "Economic Dispatch and Control of Integrated Power Systems," the students prepare a term project which is assembled into a report. This year, the assigned topic relates to demand side management. This topic appears to be especially timely and, because it relates to the revenue derived by the electric utility. The term demand side management (DSM) refers to modification of power system demand by some means in order to obtain better load factor characteristics. The study of DSM has many unresolved issues - many stem from the fact that the electric utility industry is …
A Performance Analysis Of A Digital Pll Based Mpsk Demodulator, Michael P. Fitz, R. Jean-Marc Cramer
A Performance Analysis Of A Digital Pll Based Mpsk Demodulator, Michael P. Fitz, R. Jean-Marc Cramer
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This paper presents a generalized nonlinear (Markov) analysis technique that is used to evaluate the statistical performance of uniforn~ly sampled digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) demodulators. Although the rigorous analysis of the statistical performance of the analog PLL for digitally modulated signals (i.e., Costas loops) remains an open problem, the discrete time analysis for MPSK modulation is tractable. This paper characterizes the first-order, decisiondirected DPLL based demodulator as a Markov chain. Traditional analytical techniques are used to evaluate the steady-state statistical performance. Numerical results for the steady-state density function are derived for BPSK, QPSK, and 8PSK. The resulting steady-state bit error …
Efficient Beamspace Eigen-Based Direction Of Arrival Estimation Schemes, Gregory M. Kautz, Michael D. Zoltowski
Efficient Beamspace Eigen-Based Direction Of Arrival Estimation Schemes, Gregory M. Kautz, Michael D. Zoltowski
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
The Multiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm developed in the late 70's was the first vector subspace approach used to accurately determine the arrival angles of signal wavefronts impinging upon an array of sensors. As facilitated by the geometry associated with the common uniform linear array of sensors, a root-based formulation was developed to replace the computationally intensive spectral search process and was found to offer an enhanced resolution capability in the presence of two closely-spaced signals. Operation in beamspace, where sectors of space are individually probed via a pre-processor operating on the sensor data, was found to offer both a …
Frequency Offset Compensation And Burst Design In Frequency Flat Fading Channels, Wen-Yi Kuo, Michael P. Fitz
Frequency Offset Compensation And Burst Design In Frequency Flat Fading Channels, Wen-Yi Kuo, Michael P. Fitz
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Capability to combat channel fading and easy implementation have made the pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) of practical interest in mobile communications. However, the operation in burst mode for multiple access purpose has still been a missing part from previous research. This work first examines the burst design problem associated with pilot symbol allocation in a frequency flat fading environment. Explicit relationship between error performance and the design parameters including pilot distribution, frequency offset, Doppler spread, and modulation scheme is exploreti. A new unequal spacing pilot insertion burst architecture is proposed to achieve better error performance. Frequency offset compensation in …
Solutions For Bayesian Markov Random Field Estimation Problems, Chi-Hsin Wu, Peter C. Doerschuk
Solutions For Bayesian Markov Random Field Estimation Problems, Chi-Hsin Wu, Peter C. Doerschuk
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In recent years, the use of Bayesian techniques and Markov random field (MRF) models for computer vision problems has been investigated by many researchers. The major disadvantage of discrete-state MRF models is that optimal estimators require excessive and typically random amounts of computation. In this thesis, we have developed and implemented two classes of deterministic and parallelizable approximation techniques for solving Bayesian estimation problems including image restoration and reconstruction and spatial pattern classification all based on MRF models of the underlying image. The first class of approximation technique is a family of approximations, denoted "cluster approximations," for the computation of …
