Improved Strategies For Deploying Vehicle-Actuated Control At Isolated Signalized Intersections, Michael J. Cassidy, Yu-Hao Chuang, Jeffrey Dunn Vitale Jan 1995

Improved Strategies For Deploying Vehicle-Actuated Control At Isolated Signalized Intersections, Michael J. Cassidy, Yu-Hao Chuang, Jeffrey Dunn Vitale

JTRP Technical Reports

This research has sought to demonstrate potential benefits from deploying enhanced vehicle actuation strategies at isolated signalized intersections. The work has exploited microscopic, stochastic simulation to evaluate impacts of enhanced vehicle-actuated (VA) control schemes for an array of operating conditions. Simulated outcomes (i.e. average vehicle delays) generated under the enhanced strategies were compared with outcomes resulting from more “conventional VA control policies. Findings from this work suggest that substantial delay reduction generally occurs by exploiting VA strategies which seek to 1) facilitate the use of the clearance interval by discharging vehicles, 2) shorten the duration of the required clearance interval …

New Treatment Combinations For Control Of Brush And Vegetation Management Along Indiana Roadsides, D. James Morré Jan 1995

New Treatment Combinations For Control Of Brush And Vegetation Management Along Indiana Roadsides, D. James Morré

JTRP Technical Reports

This report represents results from a project for research to develop and implement new treatment mixtures for control of problem brush, trees and other woody species and herbicide-resistant weeds along Indiana roadsides. An environmentally safe mixture of trichlopyr (Galon Herbicide) and ammonium nitrate for one application control of deciduous roadside vegetation was developed. Also discovered and developed was a new, environmentally safe and effective TR series of additives that enhance the action of the auxin herbicides (trichlopyr, 2,4-D, picloram) for inclusion in both the brush control mixtures and control of milkweed, Canada thistle, bindweed, ground cherry and other perennial, herbicide-resistant …

A Decision Support System For Real-Time Snow And Ice Control, Hjalmar James Miedema, J. R. Wright Jan 1995

A Decision Support System For Real-Time Snow And Ice Control, Hjalmar James Miedema, J. R. Wright

JTRP Technical Reports

Effective real-time snow and ice control operations require a timely initial call-out. A timely initial call-out is one that mobilizes the workforce slightly prior to the onset of hazardous road conditions. In order to estimate the onset of hazardous road conditions, the snow and ice control decision makers use available physical and meteorological information. New technologies are developed that could provide better information, thereby improving the ability to make timely initial call-outs. A systematic methodology for evaluating the benefit of additional information used in snow and ice control initiation is presented. The purposed methodology compares reduction in the direct and …

Predicting Traffic Impacts At Two-Lane Highway Work Zones, Michael J. Cassidy, Youngtae Son Jan 1995

Predicting Traffic Impacts At Two-Lane Highway Work Zones, Michael J. Cassidy, Youngtae Son

JTRP Technical Reports

Maintenance or reconstruction activity on a two-lane highway often requires a lane closure. The implementation of “one-way traffic control,” required to maintain traffic flow throughout the work zone, typically produces significant motorist delay. This report describes the adaptation and application of queuing models, originally derived for intersections controlled by vehicle-actuated traffic signals, to estimate delay at two-lane highway work zones. The models estimate expected delay as a function of directional traffic demand rates, work zone physical length and observed traffic measures. Validation efforts using simulation suggest that the models accurately predict the impacts of two-lane highway lane closures.

Inventory And Pricing In Global Operations: Learning From Observed Demands, Nicholas C. Petruzzi, Maqbool Dada Jan 1995

Inventory And Pricing In Global Operations: Learning From Observed Demands, Nicholas C. Petruzzi, Maqbool Dada

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We develop a two-period model applicable to global sourcing by considering a firm that operates in two markets: one is located in the U.S. and the second is in a country having a selling season that does not overlap with the U.S. selling season. Demand for each market depends linearly on the selling price and includes an unknown scale parameter. We assume that the firm learns from sales in the first market to assist decision making in the second. We also assume a single procurement opportunity, but allow the firm to ship leftovers from the first market to the second …

Asymmetric Corporate Exposures To Foreign Exchange Rates, Kent D. Miller, Jeffrey J. Reuer Jan 1995

Asymmetric Corporate Exposures To Foreign Exchange Rates, Kent D. Miller, Jeffrey J. Reuer

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Research examining firms' economic exposures to exchange rate movements has not differentiated periods of foreign currency appreciation and depreciation when estimating exposure coefficients. Recent theoretical developments regarding real options and pricing-to-market suggest corporate exposures may be asymmetric (i.e., the financial performance impact of a foreign currency appreciation may not be offset by the currency's depreciation). Through an empirical examination of manufacturing firms' economic exposures to exchange rate movements, this paper furnishes evidence on exposure asymmetries.

Sovereignty Conditions And Governance Modes: An Option Theory Approach, John A. Carlson Jan 1995

Sovereignty Conditions And Governance Modes: An Option Theory Approach, John A. Carlson

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study extends previous work which has examined governance decisions using option theory. In particular, it evaluates the contribution of option theory in both domestic and international environments. Empirical results from a multinomial logit model suggest that the influence of option value differs across segments.

Money Growth Variability And The Term Structure Of Interest In Japan, Gerald J. Lynch, Bradley T. Ewing Jan 1995

Money Growth Variability And The Term Structure Of Interest In Japan, Gerald J. Lynch, Bradley T. Ewing

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The hypothesis of this paper is that uncertain moeny growth leads to an increased yield spread between short term and long term interest rates. Since current inflation is obviously the same at any given time, the change in the term structure can be explained, in part, by the greater degree of uncertainty in the long term caused by monetary uncertainty. This hypothesis is tested by looking at the spread between short term and long term instruments in Japan and determining if increased monetary instability leads to a wider yield spread. We find that a rise in monetary uncertainty is associated …

Whither Flat Panel Displays?, Kala Krishna, Marie Thursby Jan 1995

Whither Flat Panel Displays?, Kala Krishna, Marie Thursby

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The paper examines possible consequences of subsidies to R&D and to volume production proposed under the Clinton administration's flat panel display initiative. We do this in the context of a model in which firms behave competitively in the short run, while realizing that their choices of capacity and yield-improving R&D in the medium and long run will affect market price.

Monetary Coordination, Fixed Exchange Rates And Noisy Markets, John A. Carlson, Dong-Geun Han Jan 1995

Monetary Coordination, Fixed Exchange Rates And Noisy Markets, John A. Carlson, Dong-Geun Han

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

With common global shocks, a leader-follower fixed-exchange-rate regime improves on a non-cooperative flexible-rate regime when the spillover effects from each country;s money supply to the other country's output are symmetric. However, small exchange market shocks, from random capital flows, may undermine the incentives for either country to be the follower. Furthermore, a regime in which exchange rates are fixed when transitory exchange-market shocks are small and flexible with larger shock always dominates a flexible-rate regime, in marked contrast to (credible) target-zone models that call for pegged rates only at upper or lower bounds in response to large shocks.

Can Barriers To Trade Make A Differential?, Jon D. Haveman Jan 1995

Can Barriers To Trade Make A Differential?, Jon D. Haveman

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Within the purview of economics, there are a number of phenomena that remain unexplained. One such phenomenon is the existence of inter-industry wage differentials; differences in wages paid to observationally equivalent workers. This paper investigates the link between the degree of international competition in an industry and the premium paid to workers in that industry. The rationale for this connection lies in the hypothesis that the source of the observed wage premium arises from the sharing of rents with workers in profitable industries. International competition serves to reduce the market power of firms in the industry reducing the existence of …

Impact Of Data-Reuse And Multiple Data-Copies In A Heterogeneous Computing System With Sequentially Executed Subtasks , Min Tan, John K. Antonio, Howard Jay Siegel, Yan Alexander Li

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In a heterogeneous computing (HC) environment, an application program is decomposed into subtasks, then each computationally homogeneous subtask is assigned to the machine where it is best suited for execution. It is assumed that, at any instant in time during the execution of a specific application program, only one machine is being used for program execution and only one subtask is being executed. A mathematical model is presented for three of the factors that affect the execution time of an application program in an HC system: matching, scheduling, and data relocation schemes. Two data relocation situations are identified, namely data-reuse …

Theoretically Optimal Duty Cycles For Chest And Abdominal Compression During External Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs, Keir Thelander Jan 1995

Theoretically Optimal Duty Cycles For Chest And Abdominal Compression During External Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs, Keir Thelander

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective: To use an electronic model of human circulation to compare the hemodynamic effects of different durations of chest compression during external CPR, both with, and without interposed abdominal compression (IAC). Methods: An electrical analog model of human circulation was studied on digital computer workstations using SPICE, a general-purpose circuit simulation program. In the model the heart and blood vessels were represented as resistive-capacitive networks, pressures as voltages, blood flow as electric current, blood inertia as inductance, and cardiac and venous valves as diodes. External pressurization of the heart and great vessels, as would occur in IAC-CPR, was simulated by …

On The Carrier Mobility In Forward-Biased Semiconductor Barriers, Mark S. Lundstrom, Shin'ichi Tanaka Jan 1995

On The Carrier Mobility In Forward-Biased Semiconductor Barriers, Mark S. Lundstrom, Shin'ichi Tanaka

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A simple one-speed solution to the Boltzmann equation is used to evaluate the mobility and diffusion coefficient for carriers in forward-biased semiconductor barriers. The analysis shows that although the average kinetic energy of carriers remains near thermal equilibrium, the mobility and diffusion coefficient are strongly reduced by the built-in field. Conventional macroscopic transport equations, which treat the carrier mobility and diffusion coefficient as single valued functions of the kinetic energy will improperly treat transport in forward-biased barriers. The results are important for the careful analysis of metal–semiconductor and heterojunction diodes.

Ex situ nonalloyed ohmic contacts were made to n- and p‐type GaAs using low‐temperature molecular beam epitaxy. For n‐type GaAs, Ag, and Ti/Au nonalloyed contacts displayed specific contact resistitivities of mid 10-7 ohm cm2. For p‐type GaAs, nonalloyed Ti/Au contacts with specific contact resistivities of about 10-7 ohm cm2 were obtained.

Transition Matrix Approach For Monte Carlo Simulation Of Coupled Electron/Phonon/Photon Dynamics, Muhammad A. Alam, Mark S. Lundstrom Jan 1995

Transition Matrix Approach For Monte Carlo Simulation Of Coupled Electron/Phonon/Photon Dynamics, Muhammad A. Alam, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A new approach for simulating the dynamics of electrons, phonons, and photons is described. The technique provides a Monte Carlo simulation of particle dynamics without the statistical noise associated with direct Monte Carlo simulation, treats physical phenomena with a wide range of time scales, and has a good computational efficiency. A transition matrix is first precomputed by direct Monte Carlo simulation. Particle populations are then updated at regular time steps by simple matrix multiplication while correcting for nonlinear effects such as carrier–carrier scattering, band filling, hot phonons, etc. The technique is well suited to studies of quantum well laser devices …

Temperature Dependence Of Minority And Majority Carrier Mobilities In Degenerately Doped Gaas, Michael L. Lovejoy, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom Jan 1995

Temperature Dependence Of Minority And Majority Carrier Mobilities In Degenerately Doped Gaas, Michael L. Lovejoy, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Measured minority and majority carrier mobility temperature dependencies in heavily doped n- and p-GaAs are compared. Majority carrier mobilities in heavily doped GaAs are essentially temperature ~T! independent while minority carrier mobilities exhibit a roughly 1/T dependence. Majority carrier freezeout, which reduces both majority–minority carrier and ionized impurity scattering, is shown not to be responsible for the 1/T minority carrier mobility dependence. The difference in minority and majority carrier mobility T dependencies is explained in terms of the increased degree of degeneracy of majority carriers with decreased temperature, which decreases majority–minority carrier scattering.

Characterization Of Photon Recycling In Thin Crystalline Gaas Light Emitting Diodes, M. P. Patkar, M. S. Lundstrom, Michael R. Melloch

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Gallium arsenide light emitting diodes (LEDs) were fabricated using molecular beam epitaxial films on GaAs substrates and removed by epitaxial lift-off (ELO). Lifted off devices were then mounted on a Si wafer using a Pd/Au/Cr contact layer, which also served as a back surface reflector. Devices were characterized by electrical and optical measurements, and the results for devices on the GaAs substrate were compared to those for EL0 devices. EL0 LEDs coated with a ZnS/MgF2 antireflection coating exhibited an optical output that was up to six times that of LEDs on GaAs substrates. At the same time, the measured current-voltage …

A Nitrided-Oxide Dielectric For Epitaxial Lateral Overgrowth Applications, William W. Fultz, Gerold W. Neudeck Jan 1995

A Nitrided-Oxide Dielectric For Epitaxial Lateral Overgrowth Applications, William W. Fultz, Gerold W. Neudeck

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Polyoxide gate dielectric degradation problems were encountered during the process development of a three-dimensional CMOS structure. In prior studies, the gate dielectric degradation was found to occur when the polyoxide was exposed to the oxygen deficient, low pressure silicon rich epitaxial lateral overgrowth (ELO) ambient . The durability of thin polyoxide dielectrics is essential to three-dimensional process, allowing bottom gate control of the vertically stacked PMOS load device. The previous process had approximately a 1000 A minimum thickness limit on the bottom gate dielectric, unacceptable when compared to modern day CMOS technology. This research was directed at developing a durable …

Abbe Francois Gaultier: Secret Envoy, E. Stewart Saunders

Libraries Research Publications

The plenipotentiaries of the warring nations met in the Dutch town of Utrecht in 1712 to begin peace negotiations that would end the war of the Spanish Succession. The French had contacted England many years prior to this date in hopes of moving along an end to the war. The Abbe Francois Gaultier was their principle agent in the many secret negotiations that preceded the final negotiations at Utrecht.
