A Tighter Lower Bound For Optimal Bin Packing, Heng Yi Chao, Mary P. Harper, Russell W. Quong
A Tighter Lower Bound For Optimal Bin Packing, Heng Yi Chao, Mary P. Harper, Russell W. Quong
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this paper, we present an O(n1ogn) algorithm to compute a tighter lower bound for the one-dimensional bin packing problem. We have simulated the algorithm on randomly generated bin packing problems with item sizes drawn uniformly from (a, b], where 0 5 a < b 5 B and B is bin size. Using our lower bound, the average error of BFD is less than 2%. For a + b > B, the error is less than 0.003%.
An Empirical Study On How Program Layout Affects Cache Miss Rates, Jeffrey P. Bradford, Russell W. Quong
An Empirical Study On How Program Layout Affects Cache Miss Rates, Jeffrey P. Bradford, Russell W. Quong
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Cache miss rates are quoted for a specific program, cache configuration, and input set; the effect of program layout on the miss rate has largely been ignored. We examine the variation of the miss rate resulting from randomly chosen layouts, the miss variation, for several cache configurations (cache size, lines size, and set-associativity), input sets, and optimization levels for five programs in the SPEC benchmark suite. We observed miss rates that varied from 0.6m to 1.8m, where m is the mean miss rate. We did not observe any consistently good layouts across different parameters; in contrast, several layouts were consistently …
Inference And Decision-Making With Partial Knowledge, S. Rasoul Safavian, David Landgrebe
Inference And Decision-Making With Partial Knowledge, S. Rasoul Safavian, David Landgrebe
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Bayesian inference and decision making requires elici1:ation of prior probabilities and sampling distributions. In many applica~tions such as exploratory data analysis, however, it may not be possible to construct the prior probabilities or the sampling distributions precisely. The objective of this thesis is to address the issues and provide some solutions to the problem of inference and decision making with imprecise or partially known priors and sampling distributions. More specifically, we will address the following three interrelated problems:( 1) how to describe imprecise priors and sampling distributions, (2) how to proceed from approximate priors and sampling distributions to approximate posteriors …
Minimizing Communication Overhead For Matrix Inversion Algorithms On Hypercubes, Xiaodong Wang, Vwani P. Roychowdhury
Minimizing Communication Overhead For Matrix Inversion Algorithms On Hypercubes, Xiaodong Wang, Vwani P. Roychowdhury
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
The mirin contribution of this report is the development of novel algorithms {that make efficient use of the communication system in distributed memory architectures with processing elements interconnected by a hypercube network. These algorithms achieve almost optimal overlap of communication delays by computation, leading to a minimization of communication overhead. Rigorous ana1ytical and numerical performance analysis of our parallel algorithms are presented as well. The parallel algorithm under study in this report is the parallel Gauss-Jordan matrix inversion algorithm. Many of the ideas introduced in this report, however, apply to other linear algebra algorithms as well. Parallel Gauss-Jordan matrix inversion …

Image Representation And Compression Using Multisplines And Adaptive Scale-Space Atom Selection , Shankar Moni, R. L. Kashyap
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
We define a new stochastic process for representing images. We call this process the Ordered-Tree process (OTP). We show the existence of such a process and derive the optimal compression algorithm for such a process. Experimental results have indicated that the algorithm outperforms many existing image compression algorithms. In order to define the stochastic process, we first define a Tree-Structured analysis (TSA). This is a generalization of a multiresolution analysis (MRA) that extracts only those properties of an MRA that serve well in image compression. In particular, we place no requirement on self-similarity or orthogonality of basis functions. We give …
An Object-Oriented Query Language For Multimedia Database Systems, Young Francis Day, Arif Ghafoor
An Object-Oriented Query Language For Multimedia Database Systems, Young Francis Day, Arif Ghafoor
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this paper, we propose a general-purpose multimedia query language that is built upon a set of generalized n-ary spatio-temporal relations and object-oriented modelling paradigm for multinnedia data. We present a grammar for the query language and elaborate how various functionalities such as declartion of multimedia data, specification of spatio-temporal logic, expression of spatio-temporal semantics for content-based retrieval of image/video data, composition of multimedia documents, and orchestration of presentations can be supported through this language. Currently, the language is being implemented using object-oriented concepts imd the Postgres database management system.
