2023 Addendum To The Rough Cilicia Kiln Site Ceramics (Syedra, Delice, Biçkici, And Antiochia Ad Cragum): An Update To The Kiln Sites, Nicholas K. Rauh

Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project, 1996-2011

This addendum summarizes the ceramic remains recovered by the Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project at four posited amphora kiln sites in the survey area: the Syedra Kiln Site, the Biçkici Kiln site, the Antiochia ad Cragum Kiln Site, and the Delice Kiln Site. All four sites were identified early on during the survey (1995-1997). The survey team conducted grab collections and triaged dozens of sherds recovered by 1997, before returning the bulk of these fragments to the field. A representative sample of the amphora fragments together with context ceramics for each site was conserved at the Alanya Archaeological Museum. In …

A Pilot Machine Learning Algorithm Detecting Security Breaches In Python, Young B. Choi

KAUPA Letters

This paper demonstrates how ChatGPT can be utilized to detect security breaches. The questions were tested by referencing the NVB (National Vulnerability Database) of NIST (National Institute of Technology). The experiment showed that the level of refinement of the question and its exactness according to the use’s requirements are very important to get the desired results. The possibility of automatic programming using Python was also identified. The experiment showed that using diverse types of security databases around the world, the machine learning algorithm designed by ChatGPT can improve the capabilities of security breaches detection further toward a generic machine learning …

Board 342: Moving Toward Transdisciplinary Learning Around Topics Of Convergence: Is It Really Possible In Higher Education Today?, Greg Strimel, Douglas Edward Pruim, Deana Lucas, Todd R. Kelley, Jung Joo Sohn

Technology Leadership and Innovation Faculty Publications

There have been numerous demands for enhancements in the way undergraduate learning occurs today, especially at a time when the value of higher education continues to be called into question. One type of demand has been for the increased integration of subjects/disciplines around relevant issues/topics—with a more recent trend of seeking transdisciplinary learning experiences for students. Transdisciplinary learning can be viewed as the holistic way of working equally across disciplines to transcend their own disciplinary boundaries to form new conceptual understandings as well as develop new ways in which to address complex topics or challenges. This transdisciplinary approach can be …

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Nanostructured metallic materials with abundant high-angle grain boundaries exhibit high strength and good radiation resistance. While the nanoscale grains induce high strength, they also degrade tensile ductility. We show that a gradient nanostructured ferritic steel exhibits simultaneous improvement in yield strength by 36% and uniform elongation by 50% compared to the homogenously structured counterpart. In situ tension studies coupled with electron backscattered diffraction analyses reveal intricate coordinated deformation mechanisms in the gradient structures. The outermost nanolaminate grains sustain a substantial plastic strain via a profound deformation mechanism involving prominent grain reorientation. This synergistic plastic co-deformation process alters the rupture mode …

I’Ve Seen This, So I’Ve Got This! Exploring The Use Of Imagery And Self-Talk Within Action Sports Athletes, Patrick R. Young

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

The present study aimed to expand the current knowledge of psychological skills usage within athletes of action sports by exploring the use of imagery and self-talk within skateboarders and snowboarders. Skateboarders and snowboarders (N 5 74) completed the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory (ACSI-28; Smith et al., 1995), the Self-Talk Questionnaire (S-TQ) for sports (Zervas et al., 2007), and the Sport Imagery Questionnaire (SIQ; Hall et al., 1998). Results indicated that participants scored significantly higher than reported norms of traditional athletes (Smith et al., 1995) on the coping with adversity and goal-setting/mental preparation subscales of the ACSI-28, and to a similar …

Unsorted Significance: Examining Potential Pathways To Extreme Political Beliefs And Communities On Reddit, Marcus Mann, Diana Zulli, Jeremy Foote, Emily Ku, Emily Primm May 2023

Unsorted Significance: Examining Potential Pathways To Extreme Political Beliefs And Communities On Reddit, Marcus Mann, Diana Zulli, Jeremy Foote, Emily Ku, Emily Primm

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Violent political extremists often point to online communities as motivating their behavior. However, researchers studying online exposure to extremism through structural mechanisms such as algorithms have not found strong evidence of their influence. At the same time, models of offline radicalization processes emphasize the importance of personal motivations, such as desire for significance and community, but do not fully account for online contexts. The authors integrate these approaches, which are both interested in worsening political extremism, asking, (1) What are the pathways to extreme content and communities online? and (2) What are the perceptions of extremism in online communities? Through …

Structural Equation Model Of Coping And Life Satisfaction Of Community-Dwelling Older People During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nasreen Lalani, Xuechao Dongjuan, Yun Cai, Gregory W. Arling

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Background

COVID-19 put older individuals at high risk for morbidity and mortality, isolation, reduced coping, and lower satisfaction with life. Many older adults experienced social isolation, fear, and anxiety. We hypothesized that successful coping with these stressors would maintain or improve satisfaction with life, a crucial psychological outcome during the pandemic. Our study investigated relationships between older people’s coping and life satisfaction during the pandemic and their optimism, sense of mastery, closeness with spouse, family, and friends, and vulnerabilities from frailty, comorbid diseases, memory problems, and dependencies in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL).

Methods

The study was based on …

A Literary Survey On The Challenges Of Adopting Lean In Aerospace Production And Aviation Maintenance, Seanan C. Lee May 2023

A Literary Survey On The Challenges Of Adopting Lean In Aerospace Production And Aviation Maintenance, Seanan C. Lee

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Lean production began as a new method for creating value through the elimination of waste, continuous process improvement by workers, and fostering respect for people. Despite its success in other industries, the significantly lower production volume, the substantially higher complexity, and the service-oriented nature of aviation maintenance demand significant adaptation of Lean principles to be effective. The lack of a holistic study on Lean adoption for aerospace production and aviation maintenance organizations hinders transformation as the two industries are intertwined in product and characteristics. Lean adoption in aerospace production is hindered by the lingering notion that it is an ‘‘automotive …

Public Acceptance Of Guidance And Regulations For Space Flight Participation, Cory Trunkhill, Robert Joslin, Joseph Keebler May 2023

Public Acceptance Of Guidance And Regulations For Space Flight Participation, Cory Trunkhill, Robert Joslin, Joseph Keebler

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Space flight participants are not professional astronauts and not subject to the rules and guidance covering space flight crewmembers. Ordinal logistic regression of survey data was utilized to explore public acceptance of current medical screening recommendations and regulations for safety risk and implied liability for civil space flight participation. Independent variables constituted participant demographic representations while dependent variables represented current Federal Aviation Administration guidance and regulations. Odds ratios were derived based on the demographic categories to interpret likelihood of acceptance for the criteria. Significant likely acceptance of guidance and regulations was found for five of twelve demographic variables influencing public …
