Effect Of Black Soldier Fly Larvae And Food Substrates On Weed Seed Emergence, Stephen L. Meyers, Jeanine Arana, Luz Cardona Giraldo, Laura Ingwell, Laura Rodriguez, Nathaly Vargas

Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications

Black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens; BSFL) composting is biotechnology used for organic waste management and an alternative to traditional composting. We designed a two-phase experiment to evaluate the effect of BSFL composting on the emergence of the following six weed species: barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli), common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia), giant foxtail (Setaria faberi), ivyleaf morningglory (Ipomoea hederacea), redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus), and velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti). The first experiment phase was in the laboratory (laboratory composting phase), which consisted of 100 seeds of each weed species subjected to five composting treatments [two controls (nontreated and standard Gainesville diet alone) and three …

The Escape Of Fast Radio Burst Emission From Magnetars, Maxim Lyutikov Mar 2024

The Escape Of Fast Radio Burst Emission From Magnetars, Maxim Lyutikov

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

We reconsider the escape of high-brightness coherent emission of fast radio bursts (FRBs) from magnetars’ magnetospheres, and conclude that there are numerous ways for the powerful FRB pulse to avoid non-linear absorption. Sufficiently strong surface magnetic fields, more than or equal to 10 percent of the quantum field, limit the waves’ non-linearity to moderate values. For weaker fields, the electric field experienced by a particle is limited by a combined ponderomotive and parallel-adiabatic forward acceleration of charges by the incoming FRB pulse along the magnetic field lines newly opened during FRB/coronal mass ejection. As a result, particles surf the weaker …

Higher Education Careers Beyond The Professoriate, Karen Cardozo, Katherine Kearns, Shannan Palma Mar 2024

Higher Education Careers Beyond The Professoriate, Karen Cardozo, Katherine Kearns, Shannan Palma

Navigating Careers in Higher Education Series

Higher Education Careers Beyond the Professoriate is one of the first collections to explore PhD career versatility within higher education. The twenty-three contributors represent diverse disciplines, institution types, professional roles, and intersectional identities. Each thoughtful and personal essay explores firsthand what it means to remain in higher education, yet not in the traditional role of a professor. Topics include establishing new career paradigms, well-being and work-life balance, blended roles and identities, and professional work around advocacy and inclusion. Unifying the essays is the idea that career diversity is intertwined with other diversity discourse, yielding a broad-based but critical examination of …

Unmanned Aircraft Systems In Road Assessment: A Novel Approach To The Pavement Condition Index And Vizir Methodologies, Diana Marcela Ortega Rengifo, Jose Capa Salinas, Javier Alexander Perez Caicedo, Manuel Alejandro Rojas Manzano Mar 2024

Unmanned Aircraft Systems In Road Assessment: A Novel Approach To The Pavement Condition Index And Vizir Methodologies, Diana Marcela Ortega Rengifo, Jose Capa Salinas, Javier Alexander Perez Caicedo, Manuel Alejandro Rojas Manzano

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

This paper presents an innovative approach to road assessment, focusing on enhancing the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) and Visión Inspection de Zones et Itinéraires Á Risque (VIZIR) methodologies by integrating Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) technology. The research was conducted in an urban setting, utilizing a UAS to capture high-resolution imagery, which was subsequently processed to generate detailed orthomosaics of road surfaces. This study critically analyzed the discrepancies between traditional field measurements and UAS-derived data in pavement condition assessment. The study findings demonstrate that photogrammetry-derived data from UAS offer at least similar or, in some cases, improved information on the collection …
