Cantaloupes (Cucumis melo) have potential as a double crop for high tunnel in West Virginia Ten cantaloupe cultivars were evaluated in a high tunnel in 2024 at the WVU Organic Horticulture Farm in Morgantown, WV. The cultivars were established as transplants and planted on black plastic mulch on May 10, 2024. Each cultivar was replicated three times in a randomized complete block experimental design. Harvest commenced approximately 60 days after transplanting and fruit weight and quality attributes were measured. ‘Sugar Cube’ and ‘Savor’ were the highest yielding personal-size melons while ‘Athena’ and ‘Ambrosia’ were the highest yielding >1 …

It is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism--this slogan has been associated with different contemporary thinkers, most notably Fredric Jameson, a comparatist whose passing in 2024 was itself felt by many as the end of an era. In Jameson’s thought, however, there is an even more binding slogan, urging us to always historicize. One way to historicize the imagery of the end under capitalism would be to trace its workings in the idea of world literature. Integrating Intercultural Competencies In An Introductory Business Information Literacy Course, Annette Bochenek, Heather A. Howard, Zoeanna A. Mayhook
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Librarians at a large Midwestern university integrated intercultural competencies into an information literacy course taught annually to over 100 first-year business students. The interventions aim to improve intercultural skills and characteristics as defined by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU) Intercultural Knowledge and Competence VALUE Rubric. Student intercultural competencies were assessed via online surveys according to the VALUE Rubric, comparing pre-, retrospective, and post-self-assessments. Students' intercultural competencies changed as a result of engaging with the course material. This paper describes the classroom interventions implemented by librarians, results from survey data analysis, and implications for library instruction.

The Science of Reading (SOR) is intended to benefit all children as they develop a strong foundation in reading. For a growing number of students who have proficiencies in languages other than English, how they experience SOR classroom activities differs. Students who are learning English as an additional language (English Learners) come from a variety of language backgrounds and enter at different levels of English proficiency, ranging from beginner to advanced. Tomatoes are a highly popular crop in Indiana's local food markets. They are most commonly grown in high tunnels to extend the harvest season and enhance yields. Beyond yield, fruit quality is a key factor for market success. This study evaluated the performance of eight determinant tomato cultivars grown in a high tunnel at the Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center in 2023.

Required Over-Conformity: Emerging Adulthood And Disability In Tight Korean Culture, Eunyoung Jung, Ji-Ryun Kim

This research examines what Korean young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) perceive as important parts of their lives, and the impact Korean culture has on their adulthood. The researcher interviewed nineteen participants with IDD in South Korea, ranging in age from nineteen to thirty-four years. A semi-structured qualitative interview was conducted to collect data. An inductive thematic data analysis identified three key themes: family-oriented lives with “constraints,” conformity to behavioral norms, and living for others. This article discusses how Korean culture impacts the emerging adulthood of young adults with IDD.

Haiku, a nature-based Japanese lyric form, encapsulates vivid imagery to evoke emotional resonance in readers. This poetic form avoids direct exposition or philosophizing, focusing instead on momentary “aha” experiences through the juxtaposition of natural and human elements. Traditional haiku often adhere to a seasonal theme, employing kigo (seasonal words) to reflect the connection between nature and human emotions. Contemporary English haiku have evolved beyond the rigid 5-7-5 syllabic structure, favoring brevity and an emphasis on imagery over didacticism or sentimentality. Effective haiku employ simple language, present tense, and a juxtaposition of interconnected images, often ending with a surprising or thought-provoking …

This research study explored the effects of district size and region on the roles of principal supervisors. Key factors examined include district region, span of control, and allocation of time for support and development by principal supervisors. The researcher compared principals’ perceptions of support they receive from their principal supervisor across different school district sizes and district types (regions) in Georgia, framed within the sociocultural learning theory. Participants selected currently serve as principals in Georgia’s rural, urban, and suburban school districts. A total of seventy-five principals agreed to participate in this study. Drivers And Barriers To Financial Transparency In Georgia’S Local Governments, Min S. Kim

This study investigates the determinants of financial transparency in local governments, specifically measured by the availability of financial documents on official websites. Hypotheses were developed to examine the relationships between financial transparency and three categories of influencing factors: community environmental characteristics, governance structures, and financial conditions. Using empirical analysis on a sample of 159 counties in Georgia, the findings reveal varying levels of support for the proposed hypotheses. Key determinants of financial transparency include population size, median household income, and the size of the board of commissioners. Conversely, financial condition factors were not found to significantly influence financial transparency. These …

The modern-day workforce is ever-changing, and so are the required leadership skill sets for employees to be successful in the workplace. University student organizations (USOs) offer students opportunities to develop their leadership skills in preparation for the workforce. The purpose of this research is to conduct an empirical study that uses distributed leadership theory (DLT) as a lens to explore how USOs influence a student's leadership capacity in the workforce. Runway incursion is a leading cause of serious incidents and accidents at airports. A common cause of runway incursions is unfamiliarity with the airport layout. To address this, we designed an electronically interactive application intended as a practice tool for pilots during flight preparation. There is a growing interest in the U.S. seafood and aquaculture market; however, studies utilizing online information to understand this market are limited. This study employs online media analytics to obtain insights into consumer perceptions and potential demand signals for shrimp and salmon in the U.S. Our results show that platform X is the preferred medium for shrimp and salmon discussions, with shrimp's physical quality and salmon's environmental impact being the two major perception drivers. Additionally, autoregressive modeling is conducted to explore the dynamics of net sentiments. Farmed shrimp and salmon consistently exhibit lower net sentiments compared to their wild …
