The Lesson Of Confucius For Today’S America: Education In Ethics Is The Road To Building A Just And Peaceful Society, Yeomin Yoon
KAUPA Letters
According to Confucius, what confers humans their special status and dignity among beings in nature is the moral virtues they can achieve. Humans should build good character, for which they need education to acquire values. He found no correlation between the ability to learn and the socio-economic status. He believed that people with the ability to learn deserved an opportunity to learn. Confucius would not approve of the prevalent American conception of education as transmitting technical knowledge and skills to students without an education in the values to promote by their use. Purely technical education would be an oxymoron for …

Selected Artificial Intelligence Provisions In U.S. Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
The 2025 Fiscal Year National Defense Authorization Act contains multiple provisions relating to artificial intelligence (AI). These congressionally mandated provisions direct various sections of the Department of Defense (DOD) and individual U.S. armed service branches to execute congressional intent for AI policymaking. Examples of such intent include identifying and planning DOD's AI workforce, demonstrating AI biotechnology applications for national security, improving the human usability of AI systems, and establishing an AI security center. This presentation will note that reports on these initiatives must be prepared for relevant congressional oversight committees, and, in many cases, are in many cases, publicly released …

Traceable And Scalable Food Balance Sheets From Agricultural Commodity Supply And Utilization Accounts (2010–2022), Xin Zhao, Maksym Chepeliev, Neus Escobar, Matthew T. Binsted, Pralit Patel, Page Kyle, Marshall A. Wise
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
The Food Balance Sheets (FBS), compiled by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), serve as a cornerstone dataset for studies on agricultural development, food security, and dietary health, providing a broad overview of global and regional food systems. However, its limited transparency and scalability hinder its application in empirical analysis and multisector dynamic modeling. Here, we present a traceable Food Balance Sheets (T-FBS) dataset, developed from detailed Supply Utilization Accounts (SUA) using a novel Primary Commodity equivalent (PCe) aggregation approach. This framework enables the aggregation of commodity flows along supply chains while ensuring consistency and balance across multiple dimensions. The …

Diversifying the simplified landscape of corn and soybeans in the Midwest is an emerging priority in both the public and private sectors to reap a suite of climate, social, agronomic, and economic benefits. However, little research has documented the perspectives of farmers, the primary stakeholders in diversification efforts. This preliminary report uses newly collected survey data (n = 725) from farmers in the states of Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa to provide descriptive statistics and tests to understand what farmers in the region think about agricultural diversification, including their perspectives on its benefits, barriers, and opportunities. For the purposes of the …
Beyond Core Object Recognition: Dnns As Models Of Dynamic Scene Perception, Matthias Tangemann, Matthias Kümmerer, Matthias Bethge
Beyond Core Object Recognition: Dnns As Models Of Dynamic Scene Perception, Matthias Tangemann, Matthias Kümmerer, Matthias Bethge
MODVIS Workshop
Deep neural networks (DNNs) have become influential computational models of human vision, particularly in explaining neural responses in the ventral stream. However, they frequently diverge from well-established findings in psychophysics, especially with regard to human perceptual biases, robustness, and generalization behavior. Much of the progress in aligning DNNs with human perception has focused on the task of core object recognition—the rapid identification of objects in static images (DiCarlo et al., 2012). In contrast, other critical dimensions of visual perception, such as motion processing and multi-object scene understanding, remain comparatively underexplored. In this talk, I present our recent work on modeling …
Capturing The Representational Dynamics Of Face Perception In Deep Recurrent Neural Networks, Hossein Adeli, Chase W. King, Nikolaus Kriegeskorte
Capturing The Representational Dynamics Of Face Perception In Deep Recurrent Neural Networks, Hossein Adeli, Chase W. King, Nikolaus Kriegeskorte
MODVIS Workshop
We investigate the representational dynamics of recurrent convolutional neural networks (RCNNs) in order to understand the time-course of visual recognition. We explore a family of models with bottom-up and lateral connections that were optimized for face-identification and object-recognition tasks. Using representational similarity analysis (RSA), we observed that only models that were trained for face identification showed a late-emerging prominent distinction of identities as seen in the monkey face patch AM. Early model responses strongly separated the objects from the faces. These findings suggest that the dynamics of face recognition that emerges in a hierarchical recurrent neural network prioritizes category-level recognition …

Attention Improves Classification Performance Of Locations In Ventral And Dorsal Visual Pathways, Jinho Lee, Sung-Mu Lee, Ishita Agarwal, Anne Sereno
MODVIS Workshop
Visual processing is divided into a ventral and dorsal pathway, thought to be important for object recognition and spatial cognition, respectively. Yet both streams encode shape and spatial information, and both are modulated by attention and task demands. This study compared how attention influences fMRI bold responses in a ventral region (fusiform gyrus, FG) and dorsal region (superior parietal gyrus, SPG). Specifically, using multivariate pattern analysis within each region, we examined whether attention modulated spatial location classification performance. During fMRI scans, participants performed one of 3 possible tasks: a 1-back task under attend-to-shape (detect a shape repetition); a 1-back task …

Effect Of Response Bias On Threshold Estimates In Confounded N-Alternative Optional Choice Experiments, James J. Blaha, Benjamin T. Backus, Thaddeus B. Czuba
MODVIS Workshop
Three modifications of the familiar 2-AFC task can be useful when collecting data to estimate sensory thresholds from unpracticed participants: (1) Make responding optional, which relieves the participant from having to guess when they are uncertain; (2) Provide N>2 alternatives, which reduces the number of trials to estimate threshold; and (3) Confound the alternatives with an independent variable, for example by having participants choose visual field locations as alternatives when measuring threshold separately at each visual field location, which reduces the number of trials through multiplexing. The N-alternative optional-choice experiment (N-AOC) and its confounded variant have not been studied …
The N-Alternative Optional Choice Experiment, Benjamin T. Backus, James J. Blaha, Thaddeus B. Czuba
The N-Alternative Optional Choice Experiment, Benjamin T. Backus, James J. Blaha, Thaddeus B. Czuba
MODVIS Workshop
When testing visual function in clinical settings, one encounters test-takers who have difficulty following a forced-choice instruction when stimulus intensity is low. “I didn’t see anything, why do I have to guess?” An optional-choice paradigm makes it easier for these test-takers to provide data. Here we describe a theory of signal detection for N-alternative optional-choice (N-AOC) psychophysical tasks. The theory generalizes two well-known paradigms into a single framework: the theory for yes-no tasks is a degenerate case in which N=1, and the theory for N-alternative forced choice tasks (N-AFC) is a degenerate case in which the decision criterion is liberal. …
Bell Telephone System’S Preeminent Role In The Growth Of Industrial Design, Ralph O. Meyer, Russell A. Flinchum
Bell Telephone System’S Preeminent Role In The Growth Of Industrial Design, Ralph O. Meyer, Russell A. Flinchum
Purdue University Press Books
Histories of design pay scant attention to the corded telephone, which played an immeasurable role in early communication. Although the Bell System, with many Nobel Prizes, is justly acknowledged for its technical prowess, it should also be recognized for its early and considerable impact on the developing discipline of industrial design. In 1930, young Henry Dreyfuss, who would later become known as a pioneer of industrial design, was retained by the Bell System as a design consultant and matured in that environment. With substantial input from Bell System engineers, Dreyfuss and his staff produced attractive telephone designs that were manufactured …

A Model Of V1 Complex Cells Based On Factorizing Amplitude And Phase, Galen Chuang, Bruno Olshausen
A Model Of V1 Complex Cells Based On Factorizing Amplitude And Phase, Galen Chuang, Bruno Olshausen
MODVIS Workshop
How does visual cortex form increasingly complex and invariant representations? We address this question starting from our understanding of natural images and V1. Although it is well-known that the relative phases of frequency components in images contain important structure, the standard model of V1 complex cells discards phase information within the receptive field. We propose a model for disentangling invariances and their accompanying transformations based on a complex-valued sparse coding model adapted from Cadieu & Olshausen 2012. This model makes phase information explicit by factorizing images into both phase and amplitude components, with structure represented by amplitude and phase patterns, …
Influence Of Task On The Geometry Of A Perceptual Space, Jonathan D. Victor, Mary M. Conte
Influence Of Task On The Geometry Of A Perceptual Space, Jonathan D. Victor, Mary M. Conte
MODVIS Workshop
Perceptual spaces are representations of a sensory or cognitive domain in which the domain’s elements correspond to points, and distances between these points are perceptual differences. Proximity relationships within a perceptual space can support a variety of functions, including discrimination, grouping, learning, and generalization. These diverse functions may use the features of the domain in different ways, resulting in task-dependent influences on the geometry of the space.
To identify and characterize these influences, we focused on a domain of visual textures. These textures varied across many dimensions, including mean luminance and low- and high-order spatial correlations, which formed the axes …
Using Neural Networks To Better Understand Static And Dynamic Components Of Facial Expression Recognition, Yi-Fan Li, Anne Bibiana Sereno
Using Neural Networks To Better Understand Static And Dynamic Components Of Facial Expression Recognition, Yi-Fan Li, Anne Bibiana Sereno
MODVIS Workshop
Facial expressions are crucial social information for human communication. In the real world, facial expressions are dynamic; however, much of existing research in facial expressions relies on static stimuli. This static approach may limit the ecological validity of our understanding of the emotional information on faces. Our study aims to investigate the dynamic and static information contained in different emotional categories of facial expressions (e.g., happy, sad). Four convolutional neural networks are introduced as models to be trained with a large-scale dynamic facial expression dataset (short videoclips of 16 frames of 7 different emotional categories) in four different ways: ordered …

Modeling Effects Of Edge Classification And Perceptual Organization On The Appearance Of Disk/Annulus Stimuli, Michael E. Rudd
Modeling Effects Of Edge Classification And Perceptual Organization On The Appearance Of Disk/Annulus Stimuli, Michael E. Rudd
MODVIS Workshop
In classical theories of sensory psychophysics, appearance matches conducted with simple stimuli consisting of disks surrounded by annuli were posited to probe low-level contrast mechanisms in the visual pathways that computed the approximate luminance ratio between the disk and annulus for the purpose of achieving lightness constancy (Wallach, 1948). Subsequent models have explained such matches on the basis of neural edge integration (Shapley & Reid, 1985; Rudd & Zemach, 2004). Here, I demonstrate that appearances matches made in the disk/annulus paradigm are influenced by at least two types of top-down effects involving edge classification and perceptual organization. I present a …
