Review Of Shape And Topology Optimization For Design Of Air-To-Refrigerant Heat Exchangers, James Tancabel, Vikrant Chandramohan Aute, Reinhard Radermacher
Review Of Shape And Topology Optimization For Design Of Air-To-Refrigerant Heat Exchangers, James Tancabel, Vikrant Chandramohan Aute, Reinhard Radermacher
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Air-to-refrigerant heat exchangers (HXs) have been the topic of exhaustive research as they are fundamental components of HVAC&R systems. It has been well-established that the large airside thermal resistance dominates the HX thermal resistance, and thus significant research efforts have focused on improving the air-side performance of these heat exchangers. As HXs continue to become more compact, thermal resistance reduction is typically realized through the utilization of extended secondary heat transfer surfaces such as fins. However, past research has shown that the thermal-hydraulic trade-offs provided by fins are often not attractive enough to warrant their use, especially for small diameter …
Experimental Investigation Of A Ground Coupled Desiccant Assisted Air Conditioning System During Winter Mode, Peter Niemann, Gerhard Schmitz
Experimental Investigation Of A Ground Coupled Desiccant Assisted Air Conditioning System During Winter Mode, Peter Niemann, Gerhard Schmitz
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Air conditioning for residential as well as non-residential applications is increasing due to various reasons. Most commonly, income growth in developing and emerging countries, climate change and increased energy building standards are indicated as reasons causing growing demand for air conditioning. Currently, most air conditioning systems are based on conditioning supply air by cooling outside air below dew point temperature, relying on a vapor compression chiller. Due to high energy demands of such systems, alternative air conditioning concepts are investigated. The advantages of desiccant assisted systems in summer mode are well-established in literature, especially in terms of performance analyses in …

A Theoretical And Experimental Analysis Of A Self-Contained R-290 Refrigeration Unit Applied To A Glass Door Reach-In Supermarket Display Case, Adriano Francisco Ronzoni, Gerson Heinzle, André Furlan, Marcelo C. Nazário, Daniel Hense
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
This paper presents a theoretical and experimental analysis of a self-contained variable speed R290 refrigeration unit applied to a typical 1.25m long two-glass-door reach-in supermarket display case, originally designed to run on an integrated R404a single speed refrigeration unit. A semi-empirical mathematical model was put forward to predict system energy consumption and cabinet psychometrics as a function of environmental conditions (ambient temperature and relative humidity), compressor model (single-speed, variable-speed and compressor displacement), refrigerant fluid (R290 and R404a) and geometry (heat exchangers overall heat transfer coefficient). One energy consumption test was performed at 32°C ambient temperature and used to calibrate components …

Validation Of A Charge-Sensitive Vapor-Injected Compression Cycle Model With Economization, Ammar M. Bahman, Davide Ziviani, Eckhard A. Groll
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
In recent years, research on economized vapor injected (EVI) compression systems showed potential improvements to both cooling capacity and coefficient of performance (COP). In addition, the operating range of compressors can be extended by reducing the discharge temperature. However, the optimum operation of such systems is directly related to the amount of refrigerant charge, which often is not optimized. Therefore, an accurate charge estimation methodology is required to further improve the operation of EVI compression systems. In this paper, a detailed cycle model has been developed for the economized vapor injected (EVI) compression system. The model aims to predict the …

Experimental Investigation Of A New Low-Approach Evaporator With Reduced Refrigerant Charge, Giuseppe Censi, Loris Giancotti, Andrea Padovan
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
The impact of the refrigerant charge is growing more and more due to the high cost of the new synthetic refrigerants (HFO) and the increasing cost of the older refrigerants. In the field of the air conditioning, for the centrifugal systems using flooded evaporators it is useful to find alternative heat exchangers with lower refrigerant charge but the same performance. Namely, it is desired a low temperature approach between the water outlet and the evaporating refrigerant, both for increasing the COP of the machine and for reaching low pressure ratios, typically required in the centrifugal compressors. Nowadays, falling film or …

Load-Based Testing To Characterize The Performance Of Variable-Speed Equipment, Akash Patil, Andrew L. Hjortland, Li Cheng, Parveen Dhillon, James E. Braun, W. Travis Horton
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
The characterization of heating and cooling performance of HVAC&R equipment is required of all manufacturers for determining seasonal energy efficiency ratings. The current rating standards, e.g. AHRI Standard 210/240, CSA C656, determine seasonal energy efficiency (e.g., SEER) using a bin method along with data from steady-state tests at different operating conditions. These standards were originally developed for equipment with single or two-stage thermostat control, but have been incrementally updated to consider equipment with variable-speed compressors and fans. However, the equipment testing is performed using control overrides and doesn’t consider the interaction of the integrated controls with the equipment. As a …

Comparison Of Mini-Channel Condensation Heat Transfer For R513a And R134a, Jordan Alexander Morrow, Jarrod Booth, Melanie Derby
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
There is increased interest in emerging, low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants due to With tthe phase out of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants (e.g., R134a); and the need for lower global warming potential (GWP) replacements, there are many questions that still need to be answered about replacement refrigerants, including heat transfer performance. One promising alternative to R134a (GWP = 1300) is R513A (GWP = 573), which is a non-flammable mixture comprised of 44% R134a and 56% R1234yf by weight. While this low GWPR513A refrigerant is attractive due to its lower GWP and A1 flammability rating, heat transfer data are limited. Condensation …
Fatigue Life Improvement Of Welded Girders With Ultrasonic Impact Treatment, Jonathan F. Hui, Jason B. Lloyd, Robert J. Connor
Fatigue Life Improvement Of Welded Girders With Ultrasonic Impact Treatment, Jonathan F. Hui, Jason B. Lloyd, Robert J. Connor
S-BRITE Reports
The fatigue life of welded connections can be improved by a variety of post‐weld treatment methods. One of the most effective methods is ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT). This technology may be applied during shop fabrication, but the greatest benefit comes from field retrofitting applications. Tensile cyclic stress ranges drive fatigue crack initiation and growth at the weld toe. This is made worse by tensile residual stresses at the weld toe that can reach the yield strength of the base metal resulting from differential cooling of the weld metal during fabrication. This concentration of tensile residual stress can have the effect …

Analysis On Hydrophobic Membrane-Based Air Pre-Dehumidification And Capillary Radiation Air Conditioning System, Zanshe Wang, Juntao Hu, Ran Li, Zaholin Gu
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Temperature and humidity are two important factors for human thermal comfort and air conditioning system. Traditional air conditioning system adjust temperature and humidity together in evaporator of refrigeration system, and the evaporation temperature is lower than the dew point temperature of air, accordingly, the thermal comfort is not easy satisfied and the whole energy efficiency ratio of refrigeration system is relative low. Temperature and humidity independent control of air conditioning system is an effective mode that can supply the needed indoor parameters with high energy efficiency ratio, simultaneously. Capillary network radiation system is a comfortable and energy-saving terminal energy supplements …

Void Fraction And Flow Regimes Determined By Visualization, Mass Measurement And New Capacitance Sensor, Hongliang Qian, Predrag S. Hrnjak
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
This paper presents void fraction and flow regimes determined by three methods: visualization (high speed camera), mass measurement (quick-closing valves) and a newly developed capacitance sensor. In a way, this is a calibration process for a capacitance sensor. It is shown that new sensor can characterize flow patterns in low mass flux range and measure void fraction for horizontal and vertical tubes. A calibration procedure of void fraction measurement is based on a mass measurement (quick-closing valves). Two calibration curves for measuring void fraction in horizontal and vertical tubes are developed. With calibration curves, sensors with similar configurations can be …

Experimental Research On Indicator Diagrams Of A Water Lubricated Screw Air Compressor, Chuang Wang, Yafen Tian, Wenqing Chen, Ziwen Xing
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In recent years, water-lubricated screw compressors have attracted more and more attention, because this type of compressors can produce the high quality air completely free of oil and there is no contamination. However, poor sealing and lubricating properties of water might result in different operating characteristics compared with those of oil-injected compressors. A good understanding of the operating mechanisms is essential in any attempt to increase the performance of the compressor, which can be achieved by means of the indicator diagram. In this paper, a prototype of the water-lubricated screw air compressor was developed and a test rig was established. …
Heat Transfer Analysis Of Linear Compressor Based On A Lumped Parameter Model, Han Gyeol Ji, G.M. Choi
Heat Transfer Analysis Of Linear Compressor Based On A Lumped Parameter Model, Han Gyeol Ji, G.M. Choi
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In this study, Heat transfer and temperature distribution in a linear compressor was analyzed by lumped parameter model. The linear compressor has a more complicated suction structure than the conventional compressor because the piston acts as a suction muffler. For this reason, Gas superheating in suction refrigerant is a very important factor in linear compressor design. The control volume consists of the solid element and the fluid elements divided into simplified elements assumed to have uniform thermodynamic properties. To verify the numerical analysis, an experiment was conducted by using calorimeter at steady state. The results of the numerical analysis show …

Comparison Of The Damping Properties Of The Compressor Valve Steels At Different Frequencies, Muhammad Waqas Tofique, Chris Millward, Alexander Lof, Azhar Nawaz
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The flapper valve is one of the most critical components of the reciprocating compressor. During the compressor’s service lifetime, the flapper valve has to open and close billions of times without failure or maintenance. Smooth and efficient operation of the compressors not only requires an optimized design of the valve but it also places high demands on its material. Material damping of the flapper valves in the reciprocating compressors positively influences the flapper valve operation by directly reducing the amplitude of the induced stress waves in the valve reeds. It has also been reported in several studies that material damping …

A Computational Investigation Of The Effect Of Ground Clearance In Vertical Ducting Systems - Ashrae Rp-1743, Romit Maulik, Omer San, Christian Konrad Bach
International High Performance Buildings Conference
The design of vertical ducting systems is a critical component of indoor climate control with the necessity of striking a balance between the dimensions of the duct and optimal ventilation. ASHRAE RP-1743 specifially adresses the length and geometry of inlet ductwork for equipment performance tests, and this paper is part of that project. In this study, we assess the effect of vertical clearance for a rectangular duct utilized for a uniform flow rate suction of ambient air. Our goal is ascertain the effect of reducing clearances and their effect on flow velocity profiles within the duct. Our computational framework is …

Investigations Of Automatic Meshing In Modeling A Dry Twin Screw Compressor, David Henry Rowinski, Yanheng Li, Karan Bansal
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In order to design screw compressors for optimal performance, it is crucial to understand the complex fluid flow processes within them. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is one approach for doing so. Considerable progress has been made over the last several years in both commercial and academic solution packages for this application; however, due to the complex moving geometries of the screw rotors and the tight clearances between the moving parts, a major challenge that remains is the generation of numerical grids that are increasingly efficient, accurate, robust, and easily created. In this study, an alternate methodology for this problem is …

Building Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is one of the largest primary energy consumer in the United States. Vapor compression systems (VCS) at the heart of building HVAC are typically sized for peak operation and operate at part load most of the time. Rating standards have been conceived to provide credit to the designs that have higher efficiency in the part load operation. However, the current evaluation procedure is not sufficiently uniform and the same system tested in different testing facilities provides different results. The deviations arise from the thermal inertia of the test setup referred to as the …

Recently, many types of low GWP refrigerants are being promoted to reduce global warming in the global HVAC/R market. As the optimal refrigerant for each application is different depending on application type, capacity and temperature range, and safety requirement, it is important to have diversity of refrigerant choice. Globally and in the US the commercial refrigeration industry is in a transition to refrigerants below a global warming potential of 1500 to meet regulatory requirements. A new Class A1 refrigerant blend in the R407 series was developed, R407H, to meet this requirement for commercial refrigeration applications. To evaluate the performance of …

Development Of An Adjustable Spiral-Shaped Evaporator, Matthias Feiner, Michael Arnemann, Martin Kipfmueller
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
The cooling of high heat flux is becoming increasingly important in technical applications. This is on the one hand due to the fact that the available installation space is becoming smaller and smaller due to progressive miniaturization, on the other hand to the ever-increasing performance, which has to be taken away in technically demanding processes such as Inconel machining. In order to meet this challenge, a new type of evaporator, the swirl evaporator, was developed. The swirl evaporator is a screw-shaped cylindrical evaporator with an internal diameter between 1 – 3 mm, which is inserted as a blind hole in …
