National and international test standards are critical to how we use and design cementitious materials. However, there are occasions when products, such as magnesium oxychloride boards, do not fall within existing harmonised standards. Technical Assessment Bodies do provide a way of allowing the introduction of new materials via European Technical Assessment or British Board of Agrément certification. Such certification should provide confidence to insurance bodies and building owners in the absence of a national standard, which can take many years to emerge. This paper discusses the fundamental science and testing of MOC boards and the discovery of startling difference in …

Determining the water permeability of concrete in structures remains a conundrum because of difficulties in removing the influences of moisture. This study describes the extended flow-net theory developed on the basis of the two-pressure head concept, which provides a means of measuring permeability under the partially saturated condition. Surface mounted tests and the standard laboratory water penetration tests were carried out to verify this approach. Before determining the water permeability, steady state flow rates at two different pressure levels were evaluated and the effects of initial moisture conditions on flow behaviour were investigated. The results indicate that the proposed approach …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Understanding the structural performance of concrete under fire, particularly during the cooling phase, is critical to ensuring post-fire safety. Concrete columns, as primary load-bearing elements, are especially vulnerable under such conditions. While Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) concrete has been widely studied in fire, limited research has addressed the behaviour of sustainable alternatives such as Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) concrete, particularly under realistic thermal decay scenarios. GGBS, a by-product of steel production, offers a low-carbon alternative to OPC, reducing embodied CO₂ while enhancing long-term durability. This study investigates the fire response of 100 mm × 200 mm cylindrical specimens …

The Indiana safety management program targets the reduction of crashes at high-speed, two-way stop-controlled (TWSC) intersections, which are responsible for 8.2% of serious crashes statewide that cause approximately 1,000 serious injuries and over 90 fatalities annually. Key risk factors include human error, high traffic volumes, and high speeds. Despite the implementation of measures, such as alternative intersection designs and enhanced visibility, additional countermeasures are needed to further mitigate these risks at rural TWSC intersections with lower traffic volumes. Intersection Conflict Warning Systems (ICWS) presents a promising solution by alerting drivers to potential vehicle conflicts.
The main objective of this study …

A Study Of Suburban Arterial Safety Performance Based On Median Type, Andrew Tarko, Qiming Guo, Priya Darshini Narayanan, Mario A. Romero, Vamsi K. Bandaru
JTRP Technical Reports
Suburban arterial roadways must serve two conflicting road functions: regional mobility and access to the abutting land. The potential for conflicts between traffic passing through and traffic accessing road from the neighboring areas could raise safety concerns. Selecting an adequate cross-section is among important decisions that road designers and traffic engineers consider when mitigating the mentioned conflict. The following three alternative treatments offer different access control levels: undivided cross-section with no median, two-way left-turn lane instead of a typical median, and non-traversable median. The frequency of access points and the selected median treatment option should be commensurate.
